The Plague of Athens (430 BC) was the world's first recorded pandemic, originating in Ethiopia and spreading across the Mediterranean to reach Athens during the Peloponnesian War. The disease killed an estimated one-quarter of Athens' population, including its leader Pericles, and is considered the moment the golden age of ancient Greece began to decline. The pandemic demonstrated how overcrowding and war conditions can facilitate disease transmission, with Thucydides providing the first detailed historical documentation of its symptoms and impact.

The first recorded pandemic ever -Plague of Athens本站添加:
430 [music] BC, a city under siege and something far deadlier than the enemy had just arrived. The world's first recorded pandemic began in Ethiopia, then tore across [music] the Mediterranean. After devastating Libya, Egypt, and Ethiopia, it reached Athens at the exact moment Sparta had the city surrounded. [music] There was nowhere to run. Athens was already collapsing under pressure. Thousands of refugees had crowded behind the city walls to escape the Spartan army, and the overcrowding turned Athens [music] into the perfect breeding ground for disease. Then, the plague exploded through the city. The symptoms were horrifying. [music] Bloodshot eyes, burning fevers, violent coughing. The heat inside their [music] bodies became so unbearable that many victims tore off their own clothes desperate for relief. Some even begged to be submerged [music] in cold water.
Most were dead within 7 to 9 days, but one man survived and documented everything. His name was Thucydides.
[music] He watched Athens descend into chaos as bodies filled the streets and hope disappeared. The plague killed [music] an estimated 1/4 of Athens' population, including its greatest leader, Pericles.
Historians often consider his death the moment the golden age of ancient Greece truly began to die. Athens never fully recovered, and in the end, Sparta won the war.
