State health officials warn that foam on Michigan waterways may contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as 'forever chemicals' because they persist in the environment and human bodies for extended periods. These man-made chemicals, found in products like nonstick cookware, waterproof clothing, and firefighting foam, can cause health issues including high cholesterol, liver damage, thyroid disease, reduced fertility, low birth weights, and certain cancers. While skin contact poses minimal risk, swallowing contaminated foam or residue on hands, towels, or pet fur is dangerous. Recommended precautions include avoiding foam along shorelines, rinsing off with clean water after water activities, and preventing pets from licking foam from their fur.

State officials warn about possible PFAs containing foams on Michigan waterwaysAdded:
All right, coming up at 5:30 now, an important warning from state health leaders ahead of the holiday weekend. A danger on the surface of lakes, rivers, and streams. Stay away from that foam.
State health officials say some of that foam could contain dangerous chemicals known as PFAS, often called forever chemicals, and they can impact our health. So, joining us now is our chief health editor, Dr. Partha Nandi. Doc, what is this foam and how can it affect us? Well, you know, my family and I love the the the boating and the water, and it's not uncommon to see foam in Lena, that's something I've taught my kids to be aware of and stay away from. The biggest concern when out enjoying our Great Lakes or any body of water is swallowing that foam or that contaminated water. Now, foam can be white, off-white, or even brown. It can form in any body of water, either naturally or because of environmental pollution. The concern is that that they may contain contain harmful bacteria, algae, viruses, or chemicals, including high levels of PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. And PFAS are man-made chemicals, and they're widely used all over the world, including Michigan. You can find them in manufacturing sites and landfills, and in things like nonstick cookware, waterproof clothing, food packaging, and firefighting foam.
They're called forever chemicals. Why?
Because they do not easily break down, and because of that, they can stay not only in the environment, but also in your bodies for a very long time. So, how how can PFAS affect our health?
Well, research is is still ongoing, but studies have shown certain PFAS exposures can increase the risk of high cholesterol, liver damage, thyroid disease, reduced fertility, low infant birth weights, and even some cancers like kidney and testicular cancer. So, what should people do if you come in contact with this foam while you're out there? So important, right? The good news is that our skin does not absorb PFAS very well. And so, the risk is low overall. But that being said, the concern is accidentally swallowing that foam or residue that is left in your hands, towels, beach gear, or other personal items. And that's why it's recommended to rinse off with clean water or shower as soon as possible following water activities. And don't forget those pets, right? Animals, especially your dogs, may lick foam from their fur after getting into the water.
And remember, if you see foam piling along shorelines or river barriers, the safest approach is to avoid it. And and you can, you know, be safe during the summer and and enjoy yourself. Just keep you know, those precautions in mind. All right. Thanks a lot, doc.
>> Hey, my pleasure.
