Former prisoners often develop deeply ingrained negative attitudes toward authority figures, such as police officers, due to the inmate social code that portrays them as 'the scum of the earth.' However, these attitudes can be transformed through academic research and shared experiences, such as running marathons, which reveal that law enforcement officers are ordinary human beings doing their jobs, not inherently evil. This demonstrates that understanding and personal connection can bridge the divide between criminal and law enforcement mindsets.
