This video report from Newzroom Afrika reveals that South Africa's Ad-Hoc Committee investigating SAPS corruption found that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu misled Parliament by contradicting President Cyril Ramaphosa's written submissions, advancing reasons not recorded in official directives, and misrepresenting the extent of presidential consultation on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). The committee concluded that the PKTT's disbandment was likely influenced by its success in unmasking a criminal syndicate involving law enforcement officials, rather than the operational or budgetary reasons officially cited. Additionally, Lieutenant General Molefe Fanny was found to have abdicated his responsibility as pre-adjudication chairperson by approving a 360 million rand tender without independent review, despite formal denials of procedural failures.

Ad-Hoc Committee Mchunu misled MPs about the disbandment of the PKTTAdded:
One report, 612 pages, and carries serious implications for Minister on leave of absence Senzo Mchunu.
The voluminous report finds that the Minister's submissions directly contradicted written submissions made by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
>> Arising from the evidence, of course, we make some key credibility assessments.
Minister Mchunu, um we conclude that on his own evidence, he issued the directive using the word immediately, but was unable to reconcile the subsequent resistance to that meaning with the ordinary meaning of his of his own letter.
Um he advanced reasons in evidence not recorded in the directive and derived from sources such as the Hassim Mashaba that the Inspector General and the National Commissioner told him were unreliable.
He admitted instructing his Chief of Staff to record Lieutenant General Kunazi without consent.
And he misrepresented to Parliament the extent of presidential consultation on the directive.
>> The inquisitorial body also concluded that the explanation provided by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Ntandla Mkhwanazi about the reasons behind the disbandment were plausible.
>> A credible evidentiary basis exists for the inference that the disbandment was influenced by PKTT success in assisting the Gauteng County Intelligence Operation to to unmask a criminal syndicate involving law law enforcement officials and not by the operational or budgetary reasons advanced uh after the event after the 31st of December.
>> And the committee found that Lieutenant General Molefe Fanny, who is currently under investigation over his role in a treasury, was not without blame in the awarding of the 360 million rand tender to Medicate 24, the company in which Vusumuzi Cat Madlala was the sole director in 2024.
>> Lieutenant General Fannie uh we assist him to have abdicated his responsibility as the pre-adjudication chairperson. He received the report, the BEC report, signed on a one-line approval, signed the appointment letter, uh conducting no independent adjudication.
His formal denial that the BAC failed to exercise due care was irreconcilable with his multiple concessions, including, and we quote him, "The tender should not have been awarded."
>> Members will now consider the report for the next week, after which they will reconvene for deliberations ahead of the 12 June deadline.
