Fitness is inherently political because it intersects with societal structures, power dynamics, and systemic inequalities; access to fitness resources, prevailing beauty standards, and wellness practices are shaped by political and economic factors that affect individual choices and community well-being, making the fitness industry a space where inclusivity, accessibility, and social justice issues must be actively addressed.

Kelly Matthews leg day and why fitness is politicalAdded:
I am with the Kelly Matthews.
>> Hey y'all.
>> She's going to kick my ass training some legs. I'm going to try to keep up. I probably won't. We're going to talk some [ __ ] talk about some fun stuff, and enjoy Lift ATX one more time.
>> Let's go.
>> How long ago did you [ __ ] up your knee?
>> Uh, I had surgery in March, so I'm like last week was my first progression for like single leg bounding.
>> Wow. or like uh like unilateral jumping.
>> It's so crazy cuz like >> I played soccer growing up.
>> I'm also 35 so I'm old. But um like an ACL tear then it was like every year we would have at least one girl tear her ACL >> and it's like done.
>> Yeah. It was like she might not ever play again.
>> Yeah.
>> Now it's like a fourmon.
>> It's nuts.
>> There's a girl. Do you follow um Jason and Lauren Pack?
>> No, >> they they're also from Boston, but they have a they have a big platform now. And she plays flag football.
>> Okay.
>> Um and she was like training to like be on the US team and she tore ACL.
>> Damn.
>> And so she's like documented a lot of her recovery and all that stuff. Um, >> and it's just been so crazy to me cuz she's already I don't remember how long ago it happened, but like a few months and she's already back to like sprinting.
>> Yeah.
>> Like jumping b all of that [ __ ] >> I mean, this is my third knee surgery.
>> Really?
>> Like torn [ __ ] >> Yeah.
>> I did my right ACL twice.
>> Yikes.
>> And now like everything on this one. And it's just getting like kind of easier >> really >> to like come back to it because I don't have the like emotional like oh my god my life is over like I'm never going to do anything again. It's like all right like I tore some [ __ ] [ __ ] it like >> go get stitched up.
>> Yep.
>> Come back to it. I mean that changes when I don't have health insurance anymore.
>> Yeah.
>> But hopefully I will be done tearing things.
>> Yeah. I don't know.
I >> think it depends on what you choose to do.
>> Yeah.
>> I used to like play a lot of >> like I played football and I would like play soccer and stuff and every time someone would get hurt, somebody would rupture an Achilles or like bust an ankle, I'm like I can't do that. Like >> like co-ed like wreck like Yeah.
>> Like it's also >> something I appreciate about the way you train and like the way you like talk about training is it like supports doing athletic [ __ ] Yeah.
>> As opposed to like if you've never run, jump, sprint in training and then you're like, "Oh, I'm going to go play soccer this week." And that's the first time you've like run at a full sprint.
>> You're going to tear your hamstring.
Yeah.
>> I think this is going to be my first box.
>> Be careful.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> You said your partner's here with you?
>> Yeah. She's doing like a sustainability like startup conference thing. feel like maybe I'm too dumb to >> even try to explain.
>> It's also crazy like meeting all like the people she's working with. She's so [ __ ] smart.
>> And like not that I'm an idiot, but then they meet me and they're like, "Oh, what do you do?" And I'm like, "Oh, I'm here to like film YouTube videos, >> dude. Jim, >> I lift." They're like, "Huh?" Like >> they kind of like look at her. They're like, "You're you sure, dude?" Like I'm like I get it. I'm also >> That's a compliment.
>> How you doing? Are you doing these from the floor or is like a >> No, no, no, no. just like regular vertical jump. So just Yeah.
Yeah. My boyfriend started an athletic like fitness competition. Yeah. We had the first one on Sunday.
>> How'd it go?
>> So good. It was great. Um, >> it seems like >> from all of the fitness competitions like the high roses and the CrossFit games, it seems like the most wellreasoned.
>> It's Yeah, cuz I think like people that are in fitness, >> yes, there will definitely be people that get into CrossFit or get into high rocks, but for me like high rocks, I don't want to do wall balls. I don't want to do like a lot of those events are just I don't find them fun. Um, and it's also not like like getting measurably better at wall balls is not important to me.
Getting measurably better at broad jumping or running my 40 is important to me. And I think like >> a lot of pe it resonates with a lot of people.
>> It's kind of like a combine setup.
>> It's literally what it is. Yeah. It's like it's meant to be kind of like a combine for for everybody.
>> Yeah. Um, >> it's also seems like the most again like reasonably like strength and conditioning based >> like competition that's not >> just like we're doing stuff.
>> Yeah, >> it gets gnarly toward the end like so it goes 40 um medball toss for distance.
>> Is that the overhead like >> so fun?
>> Yeah, >> I love that.
>> Um >> that was my favorite thing to coach.
and then broad jump approach vertical jump. But then you get into >> is that like the one step like >> you can really take as many steps as you want. It's just not a standing vert. So >> Okay.
>> You have to like step and plant at least.
>> Okay, cool.
>> Um that one's hard for me because I've never done it like and I never like >> Yeah, cuz you were a soccer player so there's not much >> up. Like I can jump, but it's more like like if you played volleyball, like you learn how to approach the net and like jump like that or like >> if you dunk back, I don't know, like [ __ ] like that.
>> Um the technique is really important. So when I did it, I literally was just like >> kind on the approach. You're like, "All right, let me just >> Yeah.
>> take my mandatory steps."
>> Exactly. Um, so now I've been like more training for it to like get better at that stuff and it's been so fun.
>> Hence the >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Yep. I also because I I got mono a few months ago and I was like in the thick of like powerlifting training at that time and like feeling really good.
>> Oh yeah. Yeah.
>> And then I got mono and I was like, >> I don't really want to see how much strength I've lost, so I'm just going to do something else.
>> Really hurts your feelings to like get sick and then be like, >> damn, I lost 300 lb on my total.
>> Yes.
>> Like >> it would have been really demoralizing if I tried to go right back into it. So, it's been a nice like >> change of pace, you know.
>> What kind of stuff do you typically like to program? Do you program for yourself?
So, right now I'm kind of just like >> training whatever because it's like I have >> trips like this where I'm training.
>> This is like my seventh training session of the week and I've been here since I started training like Tuesday.
>> Oh, we could have I didn't even think about that when you were like, "Would you rather just talk?" I was like, "I'm going to get my lift out of the way."
But >> no, like I like I haven't lifted today.
>> Okay.
>> You know, but like every other day it's only two or three sessions.
>> Damn.
>> Um which is fun. Like I love lifting.
>> Yeah. But it kind of shits on a program because it's like, "All right, I'm gonna hit chest, back, arms, and shoulders."
Yeah.
>> Twice in a row.
>> Um, but all my like lower training right now is pretty much all unilateral and then plyometric.
>> I don't really have any like squat bench dead. I've got RDL's because I really love deadlifting and like >> the lockout portion is still scary >> and I was pulling sumo before and like being in this like that lockout position >> externally rotated.
>> Um >> freaks me the [ __ ] out still.
>> I bet. Yeah, >> conventional RDL's feel fine. So that's fun.
>> But I like programming like gen pop kind of like athletic training. I don't know.
>> Yeah.
>> I describe it as just like proper strength and conditioning. Yeah. of like some lifting, some running, some throwing, some jumping. That's what's going to make you feel good. And also >> that's always the way you want to >> 100%.
>> Yeah. My general outlook is it's like unless you have something genuinely preventing you from >> you done with this one >> doing some I'm I'm done. um some kind of you know pio or jumping power work sprintish training even if you're not running like you should be doing it.
Yeah, that's the thing I I very much appreciate about a your content and your programming is like I feel like especially women get pushed a lot of like ooh 10 week abs or like ooh 8we booty program and it's like that's [ __ ] a [ __ ] You're not going to get an 8week massive growth in your glutes.
>> B like long-term training should be I think more than like aesthetics. Like the aesthetics are a nice kind of byproduct. I think it's a I think the aesthetics are the gateway drug.
>> Yeah.
>> So, like you do kind of have to dangle the carrot.
>> Yeah.
>> Especially for young women where it's like, yeah, we can grow your glutes, but also at the same time, I'm going to like trick you into liking training, you know?
>> Yeah.
>> What do you have? Front squats.
>> Yeah.
>> Unfortunately, I'm sorry.
>> I've also got a broken wrist, so I can't You're banged up, huh?
>> Um, they use this little strap cheat.
>> That's nice.
>> I honestly would probably prefer that.
My wrists always hurt.
>> The only reason I feel like I program people to be in a front rack is if they're like, "Oh, I'm going to do Olympic."
>> Yeah.
>> Like if they want to catch cleans and it's like, "All right, you got to front squat in a front rack."
>> Yeah. Um, I actually really enjoy front squatting. I also think like cuz I powerlift like the amount of extension that I'm in for back squatting all the time, like I have to counteract that somehow. So, >> also I like my limiter on front squats has historically been like upper back and core >> and I feel like that translates to my back squat so well.
>> Totally.
>> Of like being able to drive into the bar >> 100%. like it. Uh >> yeah, my front squat is like if I train it, it can get like sneakily close to my back squat. Like >> yeah, I'm always pleasantly surprised at how much I can do.
Don't even know what I need to do.
>> What's your first jump?
>> My first what? like your first weight on the bar?
>> Oh, 135.
>> Cool.
>> You played Yeah, you played college soccer.
>> I did.
>> How was like >> long time ago.
>> How was like transitioning out of that environment like into the real world like leaving competitive sports?
>> Um, you know, I I was kind of ready.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Like I don't know I had I loved soccer but I don't know by the time I finished I was like I don't know I'm ready to I kind of have my time back a little bit like >> yeah like looking back on it now it was like a full-time [ __ ] job like when I was in college like it was we would wake up we would do 6 a.m. Yeah, >> we would practice in the afternoon for like 2 or 3 hours >> and that was [ __ ] like 5 days a week and then we would have games on Fridays and Sundays.
>> Um, and so like I think I was probably burnt out like I enjoyed it till the end. I never thought about quitting or anything like that. Like I really loved it but when it was done I was not >> I didn't have any delusions about like playing pro or anything like that. like yeah um so I was ready but then like going on and like work was a weird thing cuz I was like well I don't really want to work that's how I ended up personal training so I was like I don't want to work in an office I don't want to do any of this [ __ ] >> and so I just got my personal training cert so you didn't do like uh sports science or like communications communications >> yeah I thought I was going to work in like PR or marketing Okay.
Um, and then when it came time to like apply for those jobs, I was like, I only want to work at like Reebok or >> Puma or all of these places that I want to work at mostly because >> you're like I like >> it's like really gym focused or like >> sports focused.
>> Um, yeah. So, I ended up just getting a job at Equinox in Boston.
Drives me a little crazy that they have so many mismatched plates here, but >> I cannot like use mismatched plates.
Something in my brain.
>> Well, there are some of them are different weights. Like >> they are.
>> Yeah.
>> What uh rep range are you doing here?
>> Fours.
>> Fours. Sweet.
>> Yeah, it's supposed to be four sets of four. I think I'm going to do three.
for the sake of time today. I hate four sets.
>> I [ __ ] hate it.
>> I used to have a 6x3 >> Yeah.
>> on deadlift when I was powerlifting.
>> That's the thing about powerlifting is like eventually you get to this place where like >> you have no choice but for your workouts to be 2 hours long.
>> Yeah.
>> I was bringing a camping chair with me to the gym. Like >> what's your working weight?
>> I think I'm going to go >> is it like weight programmed or RP programmed?
>> Um kind of both. I'm supposed to basically like if I complete the sets the week before, it's like do a 5 to 10% increase. So it's not like exact weights.
>> Cool.
>> Um >> and do you program yourself through ladder? Is that >> No, I have a coach actually.
>> Okay, cool. Um, I got a coach for because I decided I wanted to do a powerlifting meet. Um, and then I never went back cuz I just like I love him and he's so smart.
Um, and like such a training nerd that I just like learned so much from him even just by training with him. Um, and the freedom of not programming for yourself.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh, all of those factors compounded and I I just I just really enjoy it.
>> It's so easy to turn like just go in and turn your brain off and perform.
>> Cuz you're also going to do that either way. You're just if you're doing it yourself, you're going to turn your brain off and only do the things that you like. Like that [ __ ] that I don't really want to do.
Like >> yeah, when I was not on program, it was like sometimes I would do >> hard [ __ ] And then a lot of times I would be like, "Oh, I'm going to like squat and hip thrust and walking lunge because those are the things that I like to do."
>> Um, so I've I've grown a lot from this, too.
Is you are you taking 185 for your >> I think I'm going to do 190.
>> Cool.
>> Vegas next month.
>> Oh wow.
>> Um >> it's a different vibe.
>> Yeah. I'm going to I'm going to like Dragon's Lair.
>> I don't know much about the the Vegas training scene.
>> Um I know there's Dragons Layer which is like Flex Lewis's gym.
>> Okay.
>> And then uh like Joe Sullivan and like Briani Terry.
>> Okay. Um, they're both I've been a big fan of Joe's for a while just cuz like he's a really big squatter. He's got that one viral video where he's like going to rerack the bar and like as he's coming up the bar kind of like bends over his back.
>> Um, looks really badass and gave him shoulder pain for like eight years afterwards or something like that. Um, but yeah, there's a decent amount of like IFPB pros and like uh pro powerlifters out there that I'm like, hey, I think I think we're on the same team here. Like I just I just I just need to give you a reason to like >> say it verbatim, you know?
>> Yeah. I don't know. Do you feel like uh as like a creator or like do creators have like a responsibility to say stuff or is it kind of like personal preference?
>> I I don't know. I go back and forth on that. Um I prefer to engage with and follow people >> that do say something that do feel a level of responsibility.
Um, >> but sometimes when I think about like some of the people that I've met and interacted with >> Yeah.
>> It's like probably not. You know what I mean? Like there are a lot of people that just kind of live with their head in the sand a little bit and like >> would the internet be a better place if their opinions were out there? I don't think so. You know, like >> so I choose to engage with people that have a voice >> Yeah.
>> Um and that feel really strongly about supporting their community and being very clear about their values and what they believe. But I also a I've I've seen firsthand like what it can do to brand deals and what it can do to your business. Like you're gonna get hate.
You're gonna get >> comments. You're going to get push back from brands or companies that you work for and you have to be like very willing to >> handle that.
>> Um which I am, >> but not everybody is. And I think that that's >> okay. Not everybody's going to be a political commentator. Um, I do think when it comes to like >> like fitness is political and like I I do wish that for people that they would >> feel called to do a little more research and understand a little bit more like what people are dealing with and how much what they do and say affects their community. But I know it's not realistic for that to be the case for everybody.
And also like I don't think everyone has to be >> the most informed, the most educated and like a political commentator.
>> Totally.
>> You know, but I think in fitness like it is >> political and like a lot of people like to just be kind of like oh like it doesn't matter.
>> Yes.
>> Like >> that is a different thing to me.
>> Yeah. I'm fine like saying nothing, doing nothing, just being a fitness person.
>> Cool. But if then you are going like well I don't do that cuz it doesn't matter.
>> That's where that's where I find issue.
Yeah. It's like you know it doesn't affect you yet.
>> Yeah. Exactly.
>> Like give it a decade >> 100%. you know, like >> well, that's where I get really like I I had a little bit of a moment with there was a women's only gym that opened in the UK and there was this whole like bubble up of like the owner made a decision that uh the policy was going to be only biological women was the way that she >> phrased it.
>> Okay.
And I was pretty shocked >> at like just the sheer numbers of like turfs in the comment section, but then also like people not knowing what a turf is or what it means to be transexclusionary.
>> And I hate having to bring it down to that level of like this is how it's going to affect you because that's the only reason why you should care about it.
>> But that's what people need sometimes.
And I was like, "So, what are you gonna what what are we going to do to decide whether somebody is a biological woman?"
Because like I'm pretty muscular. I've shaved my head before.
>> Yeah.
>> Is somebody going to be checking at the door?
>> Doesn't that put us all in more danger?
>> Pretty compromising POS. I'm like, can we like just think one step further about what this means? And also, trans women have never been a danger to cis women. They've never done anything but add to a community. And like the number of women that were like, "Can't we just have one thing for ourselves?" It's like, "Bitch, shut the [ __ ] up."
>> It's also like, "It is."
>> Yeah, it is for you. Yeah.
>> For all for women.
>> For women.
>> Yeah.
>> Like >> I don't know. I I love I get girls with that one where they're like >> start talking about it. It's like I don't know. Like do you like hair extensions? Like do you like >> Yeah.
>> extensions? Like all of that stuff comes from trans women.
Yeah.
>> Um, yeah. It's also like, "Oh, I'm sorry.
You got your tits done?
>> So did she." Like, what what's the difference?
>> And like with dudes, too, I get them like, "Oh, like don't you take tests?"
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Like, aren't you on TRT, >> right?
>> Like, isn't >> didn't you take Viagra last weekend?
>> So, I was like, "Oh, okay. So, you want to look a certain way. You want to feel a certain way in your body. So, you're gonna take certain hormones to produce a result to make you feel better about your body?
>> Which sounds pretty [ __ ] similar to me, dude. I don't know. Sounds pretty familiar. Like, it's And that's what I think like is missing from a lot of at least like I'm talking to mostly dudes about it.
>> Yeah.
>> Because I feel sometimes like it's not my place to like tell women how to feel about women's spaces. As a sis man, >> I completely agree with that. I just kind of like I kind of shut the [ __ ] up and let the other women in my circle talk for me.
>> That's the right That's the right approach.
>> And then with the guys, I'm like, "Dude, like we're all doing the same shit."
Like you watch bodybuilding.
>> Like you're watching a drag show >> 100%.
>> Like you're you're watching a professional drag show.
>> I'm like >> for gay men and >> bodybuilding is the most [ __ ] event I've ever seen in my life. And I'm like, you guys refuse to admit that like this is gay. It's gay. I don't care.
Like in a good in a good way. You just embrace >> so much happier if we could just be like, "Yeah, like it's awesome."
>> Like, >> oh, I talk about all the time. I'm like the like men's lock like sports locker rooms are like the gayest place you'll ever go. And like if everybody just was comfortable with that, the world would just be a better place.
>> Yeah. And if it didn't have to be funny.
>> That's what I mean is it's just like it's okay that maybe you had a little experience with your friend when you were younger. That's all right.
>> Both this gym and Austin in general has felt very like everyone I've talked to like oh dude like you should talk to my editor. Like oh like you should you should talk to my like content scheduler. I'm like that's a job. Like >> people like people are doing that all the time. people are doing that. But you know what? It is hard to find like good really good people.
>> Yeah.
>> To like >> My issue is I'm impatient. Like I want to be on a schedule.
>> Yeah.
>> Um and so it took me a while to find a YouTube editor. Now I have this girl that literally it's like I send her the footage by Tuesday, she gets me an edit by Wednesday or Thursday, and then she like if all is good, she uploads it and it's up on Sunday. And it's literally every single week, which is exactly what I need. Before it was like, "Oh, we need like an extra couple days or like we'll have it by Friday." And it's like the following Friday, which I feel like is kind of like a creative thing where >> it's very much a creative thing. Like all of my friends are creative types in some way and trying to [ __ ] make plans with them.
>> Oh my god. be like, "Oh, dude, just >> I also use like QPT as like my standard of when to tell them to show up. Queer people time."
I'm like, I'm just going to tell you 30, 45 minutes before I want you to show up and then you'll be there on time.
>> Cute peas. That's funny.
>> All right, I'm done. You going again?
>> I'm going to take one more. This is my Yeah, my first bilateral squatting.
>> Wow, a lot of firsts. Um, I said I did a one by one at 275 cuz I took a picture like in the O where I was like in 6 months I'm squatting 275 again and like the 6 months mark hit and I was like all right like I got I don't care how ugly it is. Like I got to go [ __ ] do it.
>> Um, am I shifting like >> Oh, I haven't been watching them out.
>> Also, this is not ideal ground. Like it's definitely not level.
>> It's fine as long as there's not like an obvious hip shift.
Not too bad.
>> Your left hip is a little bit higher, but I I honestly think it's just the ground. Yeah.
>> I think it's just like that deep knee flexion is still like >> Yeah.
>> I get the Rice Krispy sounds.
>> Oh, I bet. Yeah. You I bet you get really good crackles.
>> Oh, >> I get really good crackles and I've never had Knock on wood. Never had any surgery.
>> I think everything in my body pops now.
>> Same. Well, I have like a routine now in the morning where it's like when I wake up I crack my both my ankles and my hip.
Oh, I don't know how you get your hips like when I do like a like a lateral shift, I get like a really deep >> Oh, I get like a thud almost.
>> Yes.
>> So, for me in the morning, I can get it to happen on both hips. If I lay on my stomach and I pull this knee up and then I just go like that.
>> Oh.
>> Just do like a little internal rotation and it's literally like >> bam.
>> It's crazy.
>> Every morning Tim's like, "Was that your [ __ ] hip?" Like, dude, are you surprised by now? Like, and then what? Leg extension.
>> Now it's just fun stuff. So, single leg, leg press, and then leg extension.
>> Cool.
>> And that's it.
I like this day. This is one of the more chill days right now.
>> How many days a week do you train?
>> Um, God, it really depends. Like I definitely used to be one of those people that was like delusional about the fact that like like oh travel is not going to affect my training schedule. Um but it does. Um >> so right now it's three to four lifts. I like alternate but because so Apex has a the last event is a timed mile.
>> Oh damn. So you're running now? So, I I'm doing like middle distance, which is nice. Like, I don't really like distance running. Um, but I've been doing like a track workout. Um, and then there's also >> like an assault bike workout that's in there that >> Oh, cool.
>> I kind of take it >> interval.
>> Yeah, >> it's 3030s. You do six rounds. You do six rounds of 30 on, 30 off, >> and then take a rest and then do it again. I programmed that for a bunch of my clients and they all [ __ ] hate it.
>> I just >> I'm like, I get it. I'm sorry, but like you're gonna have like >> Yeah. I'm going to start with one plate and see how that feels.
>> I like the thin plates though.
>> Yeah. Those guys Yeah, >> I might regret that, but You >> doing twelves?
>> 12 to 15.
>> I know. I'm sorry. Wasn't my choice.
>> Are you bottoming it out there?
>> Are you bottoming it out? Like, is it hitting the bottom of the machine almost? Like >> I have my foot high also to make it like a little more glute.
>> Are you like fully on the the angle up here? Are you like 50?
>> I hate that. I hate when they do that.
But yeah, >> to get in the right foot position I am.
Yeah. I also get like a little twist in that direction to like lengthen that glute a little.
Nice.
>> Oh, I'm getting >> Is that a dinosaur riding a bicycle on your calf?
>> It's uh it's a guy. It's just a little dude riding a bike.
>> Just a dude.
>> Just just a a guy hanging out.
>> My friend uh was apprenticing at a shop and he was like, "Yo, I need to tattoo something."
>> I was like, "All right." Like, "What do you got?
Um, and he was like, "I'm doing this kind of like weird gory [ __ ] Like, >> do you like that?" And I was like, >> "Sure, >> sure.
>> It's 50 bucks."
>> My god.
>> Awesome.
>> Yeah.
>> I've traded for this whole cap.
>> Which if you're not doing for tattoos, if you want to get more tattoos, >> that is one thing I'm a little ashamed to say. I've like pumped the brakes on >> because it does like for women like like pigeon hole you a little bit cuz like the brand that I work for and like this is nothing that they've ever said or anything like that but it's like >> being completely covered in tattoos is a particular look and I totally get that and like right now I get used in a lot of like campaigns and socials and stuff like that cuz I do feel like I'm at a level where like >> you've got the like >> I have some but I'm not like head to toe and so I'm like I'll get more tattoos when I'm not doing as much of that stuff anymore cuz I also I'm not like if I really wanted something I would get it but I haven't really Do you do that? Do you go in phases?
>> Yeah. I have like a couple of months where I'm like I need I need >> I'm exactly the same way. Yeah.
>> If I have empty space like I'm doing something wrong.
>> Yeah. I get like tattoo psychosis basically where it's like I'll get like three tattoos in a row >> and then I won't get tattooed for like two years.
>> Yep.
>> Yeah.
I've got two I got two artists that I coach in person.
>> Oh, nice.
>> And then we just do like what's my hourly rate to what's your hourly rate and like >> so I've got in the next 3 months I've got like 14 hours of tattoo time.
>> Nice. I'm like, "Oh, >> oh, I can't wait."
>> I feel like the older I get, the more I like traditional.
>> Yeah.
>> I just feel like it it like stands the test of time.
>> I love all of my tattoos. I wish I had planned out where they are a little bit more >> cuz like I started this leg in the middle of my [ __ ] thigh.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> And like I could have moved it up or to the side and then had like big cohesive pieces.
>> But at the time I was like I just want something >> totally >> so I just got it. Like >> do you follow um Cory Perkins perfect?
>> He he's so like now that I cuz he works for ladder too.
>> Yeah. And now that I know how obsessive he is, he definitely planned every single tattoo exactly where it was going to go, where it was going to fit in with other ones. And like it shows like his tattoos look so good. Yeah.
>> Now I kind of like show up and I'm like, "Hey, like >> what can you fit in here?"
>> Yeah.
>> Like what what's going to look cool?
>> Let's fill in this space.
>> Yeah.
I like that. Jumping up and waiting to avoid going to the 15 range.
>> What' you say?
>> Said I like you going up and waiting to avoid having to do 15.
>> I do that every time. You're >> like, I'm going to stay at 12. If it's 12 to 15, >> my coach gives me so much [ __ ] about it cuz he'll be like, all right, you got to get 15 reps. I'm like, can't we just go heavier?
>> Can't Can't we?
>> No. Hey, you got to you got to tone.
>> Got to tone. Got to keep it above 15.
>> You got to tone your muscles. I would I would hate to get bulky.
>> Looking a little bulky these days.
>> That's my favorite. I feel like it's a >> maybe I don't know if it's an overused analogy if I just use it all the time, but like when I start coaching girls and then they're like, "Oh, like I don't want to be too big." And I'm like, "Dude, like that's like getting your driver's license and being like, "Oh, I don't want to I don't want to accidentally race F1.
>> Yeah, I don't want to do NASCAR."
>> It's like I've been trying to get too bulky for like a decade. Well, what they don't I think the education gap there to me is >> when you start lifting, if you start lifting hard, you will be hungrier.
>> And if you don't have a handle on your nutrition, >> sure, you're probably going to gain some weight. Like, but it's not because you're gaining a [ __ ] ton of muscle.
It's because you're not managing your nutrition well.
>> Yeah.
Yeah, you're getting a good 10 out of me.
>> Yeah, >> they get spicy toward the end.
>> I can find a foam roller.
>> They're pretty legit.
>> I always joke that I'm I'm built to pendulum squat.
Yeah, >> if there was a pendulum squat competition, I would compete in it.
>> I loved the pendulum when I was in bodybuilding prep.
>> So, I was like, I love squatting. Like, by far my favorite movement, >> but I can't barbell squat cuz I'm like going to tear something cuz I'm so [ __ ] lean.
>> But like >> the the the Rogers pendulum >> and then like the classic pendulum.
>> That one I don't like. I the ones that I can get cuz like I have short legs >> so I can go astrass like no problem >> and just something about pendulum squatting in particular like my body just like fits really well into it.
>> So I just love it.
>> Watching you front squat it makes a ton of sense cuz you don't really have any hip shift.
>> You're just kind of like knees forward like I'm just going to rock this [ __ ] >> Hell yeah.
>> [ __ ] like all quad.
>> I'm very jealous of it. My squat looks like [ __ ] like >> Yeah. I mean, honestly, I might squat heavier if I if I did that, but I just love Yeah, I love deep squatting. It's my favorite.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> Hell yeah.
I feel like sometimes people see >> people on the internet train, >> but it's like I'm clipping out the 30 seconds after my set where I'm like starfish laying on the ground like about to puke >> and you're only seeing me like very calmly like walk the bar back in and like set it down and then the video ends. But it's like no, like I'm dying the whole time.
>> I put a lot of those moments in where I'm like [ __ ] Like there's a lot of me swearing on the internet.
This thing kind of sucks. But >> are you like actively in hip extension or are you like resting on the pad?
>> I was using the like basically using my hands to like put the foam roller under my butt.
>> Okay.
>> But yeah, it'll you should be almost in full hip extension.
running like No [ __ ] upside.
>> Hi, sweet babe.
>> Are you nervous?
You a little nervous.
>> Oh yeah, you nervous baby.
>> Yeah, it's gnarly.
>> What are you at? Like 170 >> 130.
>> Okay.
>> God.
bitching in front of me.
I'm driving by the road myself.
Yeah.
yellow.
Ow.
>> It's definitely better with this thing.
>> Oh, sorry.
So if you just put it in there and then like slide your feet in.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, is the Eric pad the little like >> just like the square?
>> There are things that go onto that.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I've been getting so many ads for that.
>> It's great. There's one at my other gym and it's so nice and it just rolls around it.
>> It's really crazy how many machines are just like bad. Yeah.
>> Like I'll get on a leg extension. I'm like, who did anybody fit in this before they like put it out for production?
>> Does anyone that like trains hard?
>> Yeah.
>> Ever used this machine before they put it out?
>> Crazy. Have you ever used um Atlantis machines?
So, my boyfriend went to the Atlantis headquarters.
>> Yeah.
>> And basically what they have is like like a test gym. So, they have like all their equipment out there, but then they also have machines that they're testing and they all like train on them for a certain amount of time before they >> Yeah.
>> I'm like that's how everybody should be doing it.
>> Have you ever trained on a panata equipment?
>> What is it?
>> Panata?
>> No, >> dude.
>> Is it good?
>> It's like the Ferrari of gym equipment.
It's like patent leather and like really bougie.
>> Yeah.
>> But everything is adjustable on every machine. Uh >> like you can like on their laces you can adjust like the degree that the seat is at and like >> the Yeah, prime.
>> There's one gym like an hour away from me in North Carolina that has a prime plate loaded chest supported row.
>> I will drive to I will drive an hour so good with the handles. Yeah, with the rotating handles. Well, it's so funny because >> I'm also such a machine dork just cuz like I like engineering and I like like the way [ __ ] is built.
>> So cool because you can like decide where you want to load it the most. And but I remember when I first saw it, >> I was just like, what is it? What does this even mean? Like do I just put it wherever? Had no idea. So with no context, it's like not super helpful.
But I [ __ ] love those machines.
I'm lucky to train with a bunch of welders >> and like machinists >> and so all of our machines.
>> I'll finish that.
>> Well, it's so funny because >> my coach will make me do weird [ __ ] So like he'll like when I'm doing leg girl or um a pendulum squat.
>> You have another one?
>> He has a last one. Yeah, >> he has a seat belt.
>> Oh, yeah. That he brings >> that he puts around. And he was like, "Oh, yeah." Like a lot of times at these bodybuilding gyms, like they basically just have welders and stuff and they just put it in there. Like >> I was like, I have no idea.
>> Like quad extension machines.
>> Yeah.
They've come in and like taken this bar off and like rotated the seat under and then rewelded it or like just we'll just drill extra holes >> into like the plate itself.
>> That's amazing.
>> And it's like >> those are the people that you need at the machine companies. Yeah.
>> Just like give us >> I want to like hit up and like or like a different machine like hey just give us your [ __ ] for like a month. We'll send you back a rough draft.
>> Exactly. Like we'll send you back a rough drop.
I don't got it down.
>> Dude, honestly, delts are stealing the show. But like Peter said back, I was like, "Oh, >> holding on for dear life."
>> Thank you.
>> This is [ __ ] me up. I got to fly tomorrow.
>> Yeah, your quads are going to be a little [ __ ] up from this probably.
>> Yeah.
>> Same. It's nice to be like, "All right, I can use these again."
>> Yeah.
>> What stuff are you like most tentative to do?
Um like unilateral bounding and like jumping and landing is really scary.
>> Yeah.
>> Um running is still really scary and then like returning to sport.
>> So like I was like wrestling and coaching wrestling.
>> Um just for like fun like I wasn't like a >> seriously competitive athlete anymore.
>> No, all you go ahead. Um, >> but it was a lot of fun and like uh I just can't go back.
>> It's also like I don't know, you don't know sometimes in grappling gyms.
>> Yeah.
>> Like if you're going to get someone that is there to like >> go insane and like hurt people.
>> Yeah.
>> Where it's like, oh, dude, like it's a Thursday. Like I'm just trying to have fun. And now like I have surgery again.
>> Yeah.
>> Like >> Well, that's Yeah. I did jiu-jitsu for a while.
>> Yeah. And >> I always remember that being the thing where it was like >> especially the older >> like >> purple brown and black belts would not grapple with like big new guys cuz they were like, "No, you're going to [ __ ] hurt me."
>> Yeah.
>> Um >> Yeah. It's gnarly. Wrestling.
>> Wrestling is so gnarly, dude.
>> It's so much fun. It's >> I feel like I trained a girl >> a long time ago that wrestled in high school >> and you never would have kn like I She was tiny. She was like this big.
>> Yeah.
>> And she was like, "Yeah, I JUST DECIDED THAT I wanted TO DO IT. I don't know. It just like looked really fun, so I just did it." And I was like, "I really feel like I missed my calling."
>> Yeah.
>> Either wrestling or rugby.
I uh I helped coach a high school girls team for a couple years >> and it's so [ __ ] fun >> to like see like a 13 14year-old girl like have that light bulb moment where she's like >> oh like I can be a badass >> and like I can physically hold my own with like the dudes on the team >> and like >> the minute like the [ __ ] talking stops and like the weird little jokes from the boys like >> you I I can like try to like correct as a coach, but like they're [ __ ] teenage boys.
>> Of course, >> they're they're idiot [ __ ] >> Yeah, they have to be embarrassed.
>> And like to watch the girl like turn around and be like, "Hey, shut the [ __ ] up, Ashley." Like, I just dropped you on your head.
>> Hell yeah.
>> Like that's so uh it was great.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh done.
>> Done. Done. Done.
>> Sweet.
>> Yeah.
I would stop.
