Cristiano Ronaldo, born in 1985 in Madeira, Portugal, rose from a poor family to become one of the greatest soccer players in history through determination, hard work, and perseverance. Despite facing challenges including a heart condition (tachycardia) that required surgery, criticism from fans, and injuries, he achieved remarkable success including 5 Ballon d'Or awards, over 800 career goals, and the distinction of being the only player to score in five FIFA World Cup tournaments. His story illustrates that talent without hard work is nothing, and that persistence and self-belief can overcome obstacles to achieve extraordinary success.

Cristiano Ronaldo // Story Time for kidsHinzugefügt:
Hey there my friends, and welcome to Live Like a Beary, where we read stories together. [music] Today's book is called Cristiano Ronaldo by Mary Nenn. Are you ready? Let's go.
>> [music] >> Hi, I'm Cristiano Ronaldo.
I was born on the 5th of February in 1985 in the São Pedro parish of Funchal.
That's in Madeira, which is a Portuguese island, my friends.
I'm the youngest of three siblings.
Our home was small, and our [music] family couldn't afford much.
When I was young, I played soccer for Andorinha. I received jerseys and supplies from the hand-me-downs my father received as a kit man.
I was very thankful.
I later joined the team called Nacional.
However, one day when I was 12 years old, a famous Portuguese team called Sporting C scouted me. My friends, Sporting is one of the top teams in Portugal. The top one being my favorite team called Benfica.
My family and I then moved to Alcochete so I could join the Sporting Youth Academy.
When I was 14, I got to play semi-professional.
I was really excited about it. My mother even approved of me concentrating on soccer only.
My friends, >> [music] >> his mom today still wishes Sporting good luck every time they [music] play. She's a big Sporting fan.
However, my life did not come without challenges.
I was diagnosed with tachycardia. This is a condition that makes my heart rate higher than others when [music] resting.
Because of this condition, I almost had to give up soccer.
Can you imagine soccer without Ronaldo?
I cannot.
I was afraid, but I underwent a surgery that could help my resting [music] heart rate.
Fortunately, the surgery was a success, and I [music] was able to begin practicing only a few days later.
In 2003, I was able to move to Manchester United. That's in England.
Just in time to play against Bolton Wanderers.
For my jersey number, I asked if I could be number 28.
Instead, I was given number seven. My friends, the number seven jersey is iconic because of Cristiano Ronaldo. I cannot imagine him with any other number, can you?
I received a standing ovation for the game I played against the Bolton Wanderers.
However, at times, people didn't agree with my playing style.
I was getting into disagreements with other players.
At the World Cup, I was booed by the audience. How mean.
I tried hard not to let the discouragement get to [music] me. My friends, sometimes we must not listen to the booers and the naysayers in our lives, right? We need to believe in ourselves.
Talent without working hard is nothing.
Let me read that again, my friends.
Talent without [music] working hard is nothing.
Although people didn't believe in me at times, I knew with persistence and determination I could do it.
I worked so hard that I claimed the Premier League title. Yay, Ronaldo!
Between 2007 and 2008, I scored 42 goals. Whoa.
Later, I had to have surgery on my ankle, which kept me out of the game for 10 weeks.
I didn't let my injury stop me. As soon as I got better, I scored my 100th goal.
My friends, isn't [music] that fantastic? That's a lot of goals.
In my career, I have achieved many goals I set out for [music] myself.
But I couldn't have done it without the support of my loved ones and fans.
I've won five Ballon d'Or awards, four European Golden Shoes, 32 trophies, including seven league titles, five UEFA Champions Leagues, the UEFA European Championship, and the UEFA Nations League. And hopefully soon in 2026, my friends, he will win the Golden Cup of the World [music] Cup, right? Fingers crossed.
I've scored over 800 official senior career goals for my club and country.
My friends, since this book was written, he's now scored over 900 official goals.
Currently, I am the only player to score in five different FIFA World Cup tournaments.
I am the first soccer player and the third sportsman ever earn over $1 billion in his career.
>> [music] >> My goodness.
It's important to me to always give back to the community. My friends, and that's exactly what he does. He's always doing charity. He's always giving money to help people. He's a good soccer player, but more importantly, he's a good person. My friends, I hope you remember to be more like Cristiano Ronaldo, and believe in yourself, and work hard at the talent that you have. [music] Until next time, my friends, don't forget to play like a beary, read like a beary, and live like a beary. Goodbye.
