It didn't slowly fill up over millions of years. In geological terms, it happened almost overnight. Some scientists believe for years that a massive meteor, the same one that wiped out the dinosaurs 70 million years ago, created the Gulf. But research shows the Gulf existed long before that. almost 400 million years ago. Back then, the land in this region cooled much faster than the rest of the North American continent. As it cooled, it contracted and began to sink. Once it dropped below sea level, water from the Atlantic Ocean rushed in, carving out the land even deeper through erosion. Eventually, the Gulf of Mexico took shape just as we know it today. And the only reason it didn't spread further inland, natural barriers, the mountains in Mexico, and the ranges in central and eastern United States. Without them, half the US could have been swallowed by the sea. Nature rewrites the map, and it almost changed America forever.
