Bees are essential for pollinating approximately 75% of crops, making their protection critical for food security. To support bee populations, people should plant diverse flowering plants that bloom at different times throughout the year, avoid over-tidying yards since bees need bare soil and twigs for nesting, and use insecticides sparingly while avoiding application during flowering periods to prevent poisoning bees.

World Bee Day 2026Added:
Happy World Bee Day, everybody.
I'm Dr. Justin Capidana from the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture at the University of Tasmania.
And we're here today celebrating everything bee.
It's really important to love bees because 75% [music] of our crops need pollination with bees being a huge proportion of >> [music] >> what gets pollinated.
If you love bees like I love bees, there are a couple things that we can do to help get these critters around our environments year-round, including planting a diversity of different flowering plants, plants that would ideally flower at different times of the year to give them food sources.
We would not want to over-tidy our yards.
A lot of bees like bare soil >> [music] >> or twigs and little stems to nest in.
And most importantly, if you've got to use insecticides, use them sparingly and minimally. And avoid spraying when plants are flowering.
That way, we don't actually poison these guys that we depend so heavily on.
