[00:14:36]>> So when planning missions for deep space, what are the biggest constraints you're constantly working around?

[00:14:44]>> Planning mission for deep space, many constraint and challenges arise.

[00:14:50]First of all, let's go back to the definition of deep space. For many of us, deep space can probably be like beyond the edge of the universe, but we don't actually need to go that far. Um, although there is no consensus on the definition of what deep space is, um, we can all agree that if the mission does not orbit primarily planet earth, uh, this mission can be called deep space mission. For instance, and quite topical example, uh the Artemis 2 mission that just launched a few days ago is considered a deep a deep space mission.

[00:15:31]>> One of the biggest constraint of deep space missions is the space environment and solar radiation. When you venture far enough from Earth, um your space system becomes uh very vulnerable to solar radiations.

[00:15:47]uh as uh planet earth magnetic field does no longer protect you. Coming back to the Artemis 2 mission uh the European Space Agency oversaw the design of the European service module. The European service module is the module in charge of providing life support system and uh attitude and orbit control system to the crew module Orion as European service module avionic system had to undergo thorough processes of verification, design, testing and validation including one of the most exciting for me uh radiation hardening. Radiation hardening is the process of manufacturing uh electrical components and circuits and make them sustainable to the aggressive radiation environment of space.

[00:16:40]>> Which parts of the mission plan or operations are most critical to get right and what happens if they don't go as expected?

[00:16:48]for deep space mission and actually for all type of missions the most critical part to get in mission planning and uh operations are uh the routines the training of the operation teams. We have operation teams actually on the ground making sure that um these uh procedures uh operation procedures are tested and validated. The operation teams usually train on average minimum I would say four weeks to really get a solid knowledge of the spacecraft they are operating from the ground. It can extend to more if the mission is more complicated uh or more complex. Um, now we also have spaceborn operators and those are more often referred to as astronaut.

[00:18:01]Astronauts will have to drill these routines and procedures daily over an extensive amount of time, which is part of their main training to go to space.

[00:18:10]If something goes wrong in these routines and procedures, we have actually contingency procedure to uh come up with alternative path and ways to uh address what goes wrong. So when something goes wrong in a mission where do problems tend to start and how do they escalate?

[00:18:32]>> Um in deep space mission and again for all type of missions um usually the mission doesn't go wrong all of a sudden. Instead we start spotting if we're lucky enough local isolated problems. We have a certain amount of time to actually address those problems and avoid them to escalate. something would go wrong in the mission if an accumulation of the small local problems are not detected and fixed in a timeline.

[00:19:02]Now what type of system would be critical to have this type of failure and local uh issues.

[00:19:13]I think electrical power system is really the most critical uh system on board the spacecraft. It does provide electrical power to all the subsystem and all the subsystem depends on electrical power. Now we can think of like critical catastrophic uh failures of electrical power system but they're actually not very common. One of them that I can think of would be a failure to a solar array deployment which would then like um prevent the mission from being um charged guaranteed with um solar solar energy. Um this is why most of missions are actually taking on board a battery. If your uh electrical power uh system is unable to uh supply or generate power, your battery can take over and that gives you a bit more time to address uh local issues on board the spacecraft.

[00:20:12]>> What do films or games usually get wrong about space?

[00:20:16]>> Movies and games tend to usually get wrong the fact that there is just no sound in space. uh sound cannot propagate in space and it's commonly featured I think in older movies and games. I think they call this the suspension of disbelief and I mean while it was serving for a time most of like movies and games nowadays have caught up to this uh famous misconception missteps.

[00:20:44]>> So what's the biggest misconception people have about space because games?

[00:20:49]>> Tough question. I had to think for that for a while and I think after reflection one thing that I realized is the time to depressurize the airlock. When astronauts get ready to go on extra vehicular activities, EVAs, um they do actually spend a lot more time uh in the uh airlock waiting for a safe and careful depressurization.

[00:21:15]Um, I realized this uh back in 2021 when I was following a live stream of uh the uh ASA and NASA astronauts uh installing new uh solar array uh roles on the international space station. And this is where I realized that actually the airlock depressurization could take up or and more than two hours which then would not really work to be featured in a game or in a movie. uh a time indication would be really nice to sensibilize the the audience the general audience to it's not a 30-second thing and they're not like just get smooshed in space directly for that.

[00:21:55]>> How do you train for situations you can't fully predict like good things going wrong in ways you didn't expect.

[00:22:01]>> Hard to hear the guy. train for situation that usually don't go uh well or that we cannot predict uh on the ground thanks to um simulation and uh augmented reality or virtual reality.

[00:22:17]The idea is to train uh crews um crews onboard spacecraft, but also operation crews to what we >> apparently these are people that that were consulted about the process of making the game and and giving it a realistic space emergency >> for uh critical malfunctions or scenarios gone terribly wrong and we are uh trying to train the teams to have the good reactions without obviously endangering them before they go to space. This is where uh simulation becomes a key aspect. We are immersing the teams to um react uh correctly to this uh situations where most of the time what makes us human is what is getting in the way to have this logical ways of addressing this uh situations.

[00:23:08]>> There's one more. Might as well watch that too before we start. So trying to survive on such an icy planet so far away from Earth would be really difficult. The game does not give us actually the distance from Earth >> but it took them roughly one and a half decades to get there. So it would be really far away. So I think we would have far less than 1% available of the solar output that we have at Earth. So you can't use solar power. And I think that is why the game focuses on this the source.

The game does not give us actually the distance from Earth, >> but it took them roughly one and a half decades to get there. So it would be really far away. So I think we would have far less than 1% available of the solar output that we have at Earth. So you can't use solar power. And I think that is why the game focuses on this the source the the power source that this mysterious source on on on Pphanany and as that trying to discover what this source actually means cuz this far away from Earth um you really need to conserve energy. Everything cost energy moving around communications. Yeah. Just about everything. What's something people don't realize about how extreme cold affects the human body or even the tech?

[01:44:57]>> I think for the human body what is you we fail to take into account is that our our fine motor skills in our fingers like you start to lose that much much earlier than you actually feel the code.

[01:45:08]So performing any type of of fine motor skills, unscrewing some screws or even perhaps punching in the the code on a keypad will be really difficult. Um and for a tech most tech well I would hope that we design tech to operate these low temperatures but if the if any technology any electronics is made to operate outside the temperature range is it's actually designed at it starts to act very strangely. Like one example is that the battery capacity drops really quickly as it gets colder. So what would be the key signs you're looking for when trying to figure out if life exists on a frozen world or moon somewhere in our solar system? It's a very interesting question. It's also very relevant at ISA. We're currently preparing for a mission to a icy moon of Saturn, the little moon and Celadus. And there this there three things you you look for. You look for liquid water. You look for a source of energy and you look for the basic building materials for life like the ba basic atoms and basic molecules.

[01:46:10]And when I talk about the energy source, it is both the source to keep the liquid ocean liquid and the energy source for life to actually live from. So on Enceladus, it's quite interesting. We also have a not so mysterious source but we have a source of energy outside of Enceladus itself is actually the tidal forces enacted by Saturn upon Enceladus that keeps the the subsurface ocean warm and and liquid and also this gives enough energy that there are hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean floor that there might be life at.

[01:46:43]So how realistic is it that we would be able to explore such an icy world as per procphanany in this game? I think a robotic mission is likely. We are currently preparing one at issa going to the moon of Enceladus around Saturn going there with humans. Um I think like we already now a bit struggling to going back to the moon and even then onwards to Mars. So I I think perhaps within the next 100 years perhaps exploratory missions but going there to live I I think it would take longer than that because there's quite a few technologies that we not have not yet developed that would be needed to actually survive on suchos inhospitable environments. So how do we actually decide which planets or moons to go and explore is a really interesting and difficult question. Is a is a multi-art question. Is is it a scientific of interest? Uh is it technically feasible? And then comes in the cost, the risk and the scale of the mission. So scientific interesting I think if we might harbor life is extremely interesting. Then technical feasibility is becomes more is it physically possible? Do we have a launcher that can put enough mass into orbit? Do we actually have enough power once we arrive at this this location? Is solar race enough or do we need need to bring something more powerful? And then the perhaps less talked about, less fun part, the the the cost, the risk and the schedule is equally important. Like can we afford it? Can we actually manage to to deliver the mission on time for the launch? And from the risk like what risk are we willing to to accept to get the mission to where it needs to go?

[01:48:18]>> It's so hard to hear that guy.

[01:48:20]>> So what is actually food like that astronaut eat? I think it's much better than most people expect it to be. uh they have a quite big selection. Um for sure they they can pick ahead of time what they want to bring with them. What they do miss is fresh fruits and vegetables. And I once had opportunity to to taste uh coffee that astronauts get to drink and it's it was tasty. It was a bit too sweet for my taste but it it was was tasty. I think the biggest and coolest things about space you can eat and drink things in different ways very different from Earth. Like you you can drink your coffee as a small floating bubble that you get to slowly suck away or inhale until it's gone.

[01:49:00]>> What do films or games usually get wrong about space?

[01:49:04]>> So what does films and games get wrong about space? I think quite often the concept of gravity is is left out or lacking. It might be just be a bit too costly to to have everything float around as it would be in in serial gravity. But the one thing that stands out the most to me is that in all the the the movies and the games, everything happens so quickly. Real space mission takes years to plan. Like you you do not see an astronaut driving up to the rocket and jumping into rocket and shooting off into space. They have to spend a week in quarantine first. And like you have procedures for absolutely everything. So the all these emergencies that happen in movies, they they the astronauts normally know what they need to do. They have a procedure that that you just need to follow. What's one of the strangest effects space has on the human body?

[01:49:50]>> What's the strangest effects the space has on the human body? I think it has a couple effects. You you grow longer in the lack of gravity. Uh your muscle mass decreases, your bone mass decreases. And for the first couple of days in space, your your your heart has to somehow adjust or it doesn't realize you're no longer in gravity. So, it's keep on pumping way more blood into your head than it needs to. So your entire face uh puffs up becomes a bit reddish in pain but that luckily goes away after a few days.

Like you spend most of the time on a space mission, you spend it traveling from point A to B. And speaking of traveling is kind of counterintuitive, but if you're in orbit around a moon or a planet, if you're trying to catch up with someone, you don't speed up. You slow down. you you let orbital mechanics actually carry around the moon or the planet a bit quicker than what whomever you're trying to catch up. Then at the very end you you speed up again to actually catch up with him. So you have to speed down slow down to speed up.

And they also introduce a a superficial delay on all communications to to to simulate what it would be like in actual space. How do you cope with stress and and how how do you make quick sound judgment on a under time constraint?
