From Slow to Fast: How Chinese Starts to Click

[00:00:00]After building a foundation, new words take seconds to learn. Early vocabulary learning feels slow, but once you have a foundation, every new word has something to connect to, and [music] learning speed explodes. Here's the principle.

[00:00:12]Mnemonics work by connecting new information to existing knowledge. When you're starting out, you have very little Chinese in your brain, right?

[00:00:19]Each new word has to connect [music] to English, which works, but takes a bit more effort. As you build vocabulary, something magical happens. New words can connect to Chinese you already know, not [music] just English. Let me show you what I mean. So, bèi zi is a very common word meaning cup in Chinese. Let's say you learned that early on, and you created some mnemonic and reviewed it a few times, and it stuck. [music] Now you encounter bèi zi, which is duvet or blanket. Very similar pronunciation, almost the same, but very different meaning. But, you can use the knowledge of bèi zi, cup, to learn duvet really quickly. You just imagine a duvet made entirely of cups clinking as you put yourself to [music] sleep. So, connecting like this to existing knowledge of Chinese is way faster than starting [music] from scratch, and so it compounds. With 100 new words, each word has 100 potential connections [music] you can make to other words. Building that initial network of words and characters from scratch takes a little while in the early stages, but once that network exists, [music] man, adding new words is like plugging into that existing grid, and it's just really fast.
