Did We Get Enough Rain to Plant Double-Crop Soybeans?
Added:[music] [music] >> Let's haul the last of this week before it gets hot today. Only supposed to get up to about 95° with a heat index of over 100.
Okay, I found out this morning that I have been the only one in here with wheat this week. Apparently, I'm the only one cutting. Everybody else still has green wheat.
They still got the doughy wheat and just can't cut it. I don't know what I have done differently unless it's the variety that I planted, but here I've I'm done cutting wheat and no one else in the county has started.
That's That's a bit crazy to me because I'm not that person to be the first one out of the gate.
And uh this load of wheat was 15.4 on the moisture and the test weight was 60.
5 or 60.8, I think he said.
60.9 was the test weight.
And based on the bushels that I had on here, because of that test weight, it increased my bushels.
I was very close to 90 bushels to the acre average there at the house or at the shop.
Uh so I I have no complaints about that.
Okay, the wheat is done.
Straw is done.
Uh I think tomorrow I'm probably going to put some more nitrogen on that last corn that I planted.
Uh we still need some rain before I can put soybeans in the ground behind this wheat.
Um and I've got to check my other full season soybeans to see what the weed pressure is to see if it's time to spray those yet.
I'm going to take a load of uh millings home with me. I've got some patching up down at the farm to do, so a load of millings should do it.
I got a spreader full of urea this afternoon, headed down the road now, but uh note to self, don't do this at the peak of traffic. It's 4:09 minutes after 4:00.
Traffic is Well, traffic has been horrible anytime of day for the last couple of weeks, and I don't understand why.
Uh looks like we got a few clouds building. Don't know if that's going to give us any thunderstorms or not, but let's hope so.
We do need some rain terribly. I did have a special coating put on this uh urea.
So in the event that it doesn't rain, it will stay there a little bit longer uh before it volatilizes and you lose some of it uh into the atmosphere. It was an extra $50 a ton, but you know, good insurance policy.
If it goes ahead and rains because I spent the extra $5, then I I don't care.
If it made it rain, that's good.
So, I'm not going to put this on when I get down the road this evening. I'll wait till tomorrow morning when the temperatures are a little bit cooler. Currently, we're at sitting at 100°.
That's That's hot. 100°.
And with the humidity, it's probably feels like 110°.
I'm sure the temperature at the farm is much cooler. I'm in the big city right now, and it's always hotter in the big city. 92° at the farm. We did reach a high of what, 94.8 today?
No, 95.2.
Currently, with the humidity, it feels like 106° down at the farm.
So, yeah. Here, it probably feels like 115° or 120° with 100° air temperature.
And tomorrow is supposed to be just as hot. Better chance of thunderstorms tomorrow evening though, so fingers crossed, underwear inside out, and hair not cut.
Hoping for the rain.
It's going to be another hot day. So, I'm trying to get this stuff done early.
Putting some urea on this corn.
We had a chance of rain yesterday evening, but we did not get any.
I think to the north of us, they did get some rain, but not down here.
We do have a better of rain this evening, so that's why I'm getting this urea out here now.
Hopefully it rains this evening and gets this urea in the ground and gets it working and greens this corn up and makes it grow like the Jolly Green Giant.
Let's check in with the Bird Man and see how the double crop soybean planting is going.
>> Well, here we are putting the second crop in after some wheat.
Trying to work out a few bugs.
Working that machine there and this machine back here and just about finished up with this field and we'll be moving on to the next.
We'll keep you more information later.
All right, we've got a little update. So we moved from the homestead farm over there to another farm right here on the same road.
Still planting second crop soybeans behind the wheat.
But we've had a small change in machinery.
We're using the John Deere MaxEmerge.
We're doing six rows at a time and then we're going to cut a diagonal line, plant another six rows across and get it nice and thick.
And uh hopefully it'll help cut through some of this wheat stubble and uh what all is left in the field.
We'll be day.
Temperatures wonderful.
Not as hot as it used to be.
Got almost an inch of rain last night.
Plant conditions are perfect.
Hopefully we'll get all this done.
Got another chance of rain in a couple days.
50 beans off.
Get them going where they need to go.
Let me see if I can see if I can do this and turn at the end of the field cuz I'm a rookie at this.
Video and stuff, you know.
I think the only time I ever videoed when I was running the snow plow.
Hello Duffer.
Got a lot of uh different things to pay attention to here, you know. Speed, keeping it straight, putting crop in the ground, and if anybody calls and bothers me.
But having a good time out here.
Having a good time.
Beautiful.
Can't remember exactly how many how many acres are over there. We got to do that field, finish this field, and there's another smaller field over there.
Those are always fun.
But anyhow, and Farmer Embry MD had to get me to help me set this thing up because I started down through the field.
And uh row five was acting up.
Be from over here and spun it. Thought I saw beans coming out of the thing.
There was no beans coming out.
Chain had popped off.
Got the chain put back on there.
Everything is working like a champ now. So, all right, y'all hold on. I got to I got to do my tractor driving stuff here.
I don't know how they do it with one hand. I need like three hands.
Hey, if I get the rows crooked, at least I got something to blame.
I got something to blame.
Get back on here.
There we go.
These are probably the longest rows in this field.
Well, we're back at it again today.
Planted this way once. Now it's planting at a diagonal for the second pass.
Got the 30-in row planter. So, 15-in spacing hopefully we can accomplish that.
We can get some better coverage.
Helps cut through the straw with the wheat.
Pretty bumpy going this way though.
I wish I could get my rows as straight when I'm over grass.
Beautiful day.
I don't think it's going to get near 80° probably in the high 70s today.
Loose skies, no clouds, got a chance of rain coming in maybe tonight.
Hopefully by Friday.
Had a little bit of a struggle getting things going this morning, but feel like a bobble head.
Might smooth out a little bit and get near the middle of the field.
Cuz I'm near the end.
Probably these two wet spots here that are a little low land.
They hold a wet in there.
It's got a little dip there.
Got one little small field over here.
That'll be it for 2026.
At least for the second second crop.
Neighbors are over there cutting wheat.
Baling some straw.
Still working on the second pass on these fields.
It's diagonal lines going this way.
Already went north south, sort of east west.
Just topped off with a little more seed.
Hopefully it'll be enough to finish this field and go over there.
There's a small little 7 acre field over there. side of this house.
Neighbors are over there getting their straw.
They parked down here at the end.
I guess with the long weekend coming must have seemed like 15-20 campers heading down there already.
Today is only what? Tuesday?
I guess they're getting a head start.
I hope you all can feel this ride on that camera as much as I can in this this tractor.
All right, I got to turn around up there so we'll check back in later.
All right, just got a few more short short rows to do over here.
Uh second crop of wheat means that we are all complete for 2026.
I just stopped to get a little more seed.
And uh I don't about two more bags.
We should uh we should wrap this up be done for the at least 2026 planning until until the fall to put some wheat in.
All right, that's it. We're heading back to the to the farm. Wheat's all done.
I'm going to try to get off this driveway here.
I got to go down.
I mean, I'm going 2 mph, but another little shot of rain here in the next day or two and that stuff will take off.
Sorry I didn't get you more more planting, but I got to work on my skills. Talk to y'all later.
As you just saw, we finished planting our double crop soybeans yesterday, and well, this morning at 5:00 I had a pleasant surprise.
You see that? We had We had a thunderstorm roll through. Wasn't expecting that. My uh digital rain gauge up there recorded 0.58 in. That sounds about right based on the neighbor, but let's look at the mechanical rain gauge and see what is in here. Oh, it's a whole lot more in here.
point uh point eight three eight four. Yeah, almost point eight five in there.
Wow, okay.
Uh the neighbor across the way there recorded uh point six five in their rain gauge, and the neighbor down there only reported uh was a point one three, but it it was a very narrow band of the thunderstorm rolling through. So, point eight three is what we'll call it here.
So, I've I'm going to have to get up on top of there and look inside of that cup to see if there's uh some bird doo-doo in there that is blocking that water from going in.
So, that was a nice rain that uh we've got uh just in time since these soybeans were just planted.
>> [sighs and gasps] >> It'll get those popping. We've got warm temperatures coming up the next couple of days, so that'll be wonderful. Things are really really looking good now.
Let's wrap this video up and say see y'all.
>> See y'all.
>> Oh.
