The Boldest Move In American History #history #shorts #usaAdded:
Only weeks after the shot heard around the world, Patriot forces launched one of the revolution's boldest early attacks.
On May 10th, [music] 1775, colonial fighters moved against the British-held capture of Fort Ticonderoga near Lake Champlain. The mission was dangerous but simple. Capture the fort and seize its cannons before the British could use them. Leading the attack was the fiery frontiersman Ethan Allen >> [music] >> and his Green Mountain Boys.
Alongside him was another ambitious Patriot officer, Benedict Arnold. Before dawn, the Patriots crossed [music] the lake and approached the fort while most of the British garrison still slept. The surprised [music] British defenders were caught off guard.
According to legend, Ethan Allen demanded surrender in the name of the great Jehovah and the Continental Congress. [music] The fort quickly fell into Patriot hands with little bloodshed, but the greatest prize was not the fort itself. It was the massive [music] collection of artillery inside.
Months later, those captured cannons would be dragged through snow and wilderness to help force [music] the British out of Boston. At the time, Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold were celebrated as heroes of the growing [music] revolution.
But neither man yet knew how complicated their futures [music] would become.
In the early days of the war, however, Fort Ticonderoga gave the colonies something they desperately needed.
