Derecho throws chairs into traffic as it rips through Chicago

[00:00:15]Nick LaVera has captured this time-lapse [music] video showing the storm blowing into Chicago saying he could really feel the building swaying from the strong winds.

[00:00:25]Trees were toppled damaging vehicles and the storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands. The strongest known gust was measured at over 150 km/h.

[00:00:35]Days after the storm swept across the Midwest, it was determined to have met the criteria of a derecho.

[00:00:42]While a tornado can cause extreme damage in a concentrated area, the straight-line winds of a derecho can [music] stretch hundreds of kilometers impacting a widespread area during its long track.
