Farm engineers built harvesters so far ahead of everyone else that the whole industry stole their ideas, scaled [music] them up, and then let the originals rot behind barns. 10 forgotten machines. Every single one secretly brilliant. Let me show you the ones history quietly threw away. [music] Number 10, the Armor Salmon belt lift harvesters. Let's start with the machine that didn't dig its beats out of the ground at all. It grabbed them by the leaves and hauled them out like weeds. [music] By the time Armor's machine appeared, the industry had mostly settled on two ways of getting a beat out of the soil. You either [music] slid steel shares underneath the root like a little plow, or you used lifting wheels [music] that squeezed the body of the root and drew it upward. Both of them had one thing in common. They went into the ground. Armor, a machinery outfit [music] tied to Ireland's sugar industry over in County Carlo, looked at that and asked a beautifully simple question. What if the machine barely touched the soil at all? Their answer was the belt lift system. And it's genuinely [music] clever. A pair of angled belts ran down over the row and pinched each beat high up near the crown where the leaves meet [music] the root. A small plow point ran underneath to loosen the beat. And the belt simply drew the whole plant up and out by its top end, gripping the leaves [music] as a handle. As the beet rose, spinning knives sliced the tops [music] clean off and flung them out the back, and the topped route dropped away to the elevator and into the tank. The clever heart of it was the lifting system, Maynard lifting wheels. This wasn't a brand new idea. The Maynard [music] system dated all the way back to the 1920s and was the first British design to use lifting wheels instead of shares. But Standin refined it into something farmers genuinely trusted. The way it worked was almost gentle. The wheels gripped each [music] route with a squeeze and pull motion, drawing the whole beat cleanly out of the ground [music] rather than tearing it. in the right lighter soils that produced a remarkably clean sample. Less dirt, less waste, more sugar making it to the factory. Stand [music] dressed it in a modern-looking sloping cleaning web cover. Fitted a side elevator so you could unload on the move into a trailer running alongside [music] and offered an optional holding tank so you could leave the trailer parked on the headland and cut your labor down. And it [music] was quick for its day. The raped could clear up to an acre and a half in 1 hour. one row at a time. Here's the number that [music] tells you how good it was. Stand sold around 10,000 rapides through the 1960s and '7s and kept building them into the 1980s. 10,000. This was [music] by a huge margin the most successful sugarbeat harvester stand ever made. Number eight, the Dyson self-propelled [music] harvester. 1963. The same year the rap had launched, another British firm was aiming much, much higher. While Standon [music] was perfecting the one row trailed machine, Dyson decided Britain was ready for [music] something the Americans and the French had already been experimenting with, a self-propelled beat harvester that carried its own engine and driving platform with no tractor doing the pulling. [music] The Dyson, launched in 1963, was among the very first British machines to market with that idea. And on paper, it was seriously ambitious. [music] It carried a 3-tonon holding tank, enormous for a British machine of that era. It used an offset topper [music] to deal with the leaves, and it was powered by its own 56 horsepower Perkins engine, a proper purpose-built drive line rather than a borrowed tractor. Think about what that meant for a farmer in 1963. Instead of a tractor, a driver, a trailer, and a second person all working in convoy, here was a single machine [music] that topped, lifted, cleaned, stored, and moved itself. One operator doing a job that used [music] to take a small crew. That's the entire future of the industry, sketched out in one machine decades [music] before it became normal. So why didn't Dyson become a household name [music] like Standon? Because being early is not the same as being successful. British farmers on the whole stayed loyal to trailed harvesters for years to come. The self-propelled [music] revolution was real. But it arrived slowly in Britain. And when it finally did, the momentum was largely with European [music] builders, not homegrown pioneers like Dyson. The Dyson had the right idea at the wrong [music] moment.
A machine that saw where the whole industry was heading and simply got there too soon to cash in.
Brilliant and almost completely forgotten. Number seven, the Standen Solo Beat 1964. This is the one I promised you in the hook. The machine that carried a tractor on its back. Stand watched the self-propelled [music] idea developing and came up with a genuinely clever workaround. Building a full self-propelled [music] machine with its own engine, gearbox, and cab was expensive.
So instead, when farmers first saw the Solibite at a working demonstration [music] in 1964, Standon's answer was this. Take a normal farm tractor, remove [music] its wheels, and bolt the whole skid unit high up on top of the harvester. The tractor's engine and hydraulics now powered everything, and [music] its rear wheels, chain driven from the axle, drove the machine along. It was a single row harvester. A topper removed the leaves a row ahead of the lifting gear. Maynard lifting wheels [music] drew the beats out. Cleaning webs carried them up to a holding tank that held 2 and 1/2 tons and an unloading elevator emptied it into a trailer when needed. Now, here's the part that makes it brilliant [music] rather than just odd. The whole point of the skid unit was flexibility. Stande could fit all sorts of tractors. [music] The Massie Ferguson 35 was a common choice, but also the 135, the Fordson Dexter, and Super [music] Dexter. the Ford 3000 or the International 414. The theory was that once beat harvest was over, you'd unbolt the tractor, put its wheels back on, and use it for everything else all year. One tractor, two jobs. In practice, [music] most farmers just left the tractor bolted in place. But the idea was sound. Stand even dreamed bigger. The Solbeat was originally meant to be a platform for a whole range of beet [music] growing tools. Sewing, spraying, inter row hoing, a single self-propelled base you'd re-equipped through the season. That part never made [music] it past the prototype stage. Sadly, the harvester itself, though, was a hit throughout the 1960s and into the 70s. The original had a single front wheel, great for tight turns on the headland, but [music] a bit tippy. So, the MK2 of 1968 went to a four-wheel layout, and added refinements like a top pulverizer and a power-driven [music] lifting wheel, rugged, clever, and thoroughly forgotten today, partly because so many were scrapped once collectors pulled the [music] vintage tractors back out of them. Number six, the catchpole PowerB.
1960s. Where there's a good idea, there's a rival [music] with a slightly different take on it. And the catchpole PowerB was the Solar Beat's closest competitor. Catchpole built [music] a machine on the very same principle, a self-propelled beat harvester that needed a tractor skid unit for its power [music] rather than carrying its own engine. If you liked the solo beat concept, but [music] you were a catchpole customer, this was your machine. The clever difference was in the lifting. Where Standon leaned on Maynard wheels, [music] the PowerB used opel lifting wheels, a different geometry for gripping and drawing the [music] root from the soil and a system that would go on to appear on plenty of later harvesters, too. It ran a smaller capacity holding tank [music] than the Solo Beat, which made it a slightly lighter, more compact proposition.
The Power Beatat's real historical footnote is what happened to Catch Pole as a company. In 1968, [music] the long-established Ipswich firm of Ransoms took over the catch pole concern.
And rather than kill the Power Beat [music] off, Ransoms kept building it for a time under their own name. So, this little skid unit harvester actually outlived its [music] original maker, carried forward by one of the biggest names in British agricultural engineering. It's a machine most people have never heard of, from a company most people have never heard of, using a lifting system most people couldn't name. And yet it did exactly what a small acreage farmer needed. It turned one tractor and one person into a complete harvesting outfit. [music] That's the quiet brilliance of the skidunit era. A bunch of small British firms independently arriving at clever affordable answers to the same hard problem years [music] before the big self-propelled machines made them all obsolete. Number five, the ransoms hunter. 1974. Ransoms didn't just [music] inherit catchples ideas. In 1974, they built something genuinely more advanced, and this one deserves far more credit than history gave it. The Hunter was a two row harvester, and it made a clean break from the [music] skid unit trick. No borrowed tractor bolted on top. Instead, the Hunter had its own engine and its own cab. And this is the smart [music] bit, it was built on the chassis of one of Ransom's own combine harvesters. Ransoms already knew how to build a self-propelled harvesting machine. They just pointed that [music] expertise at Sugarbeat. The result was a neat, purpose-built unit with a holding [music] tank, so you weren't forever dependent on a trailer running alongside. But here's what makes the Hunter belong on a brilliant list rather than just a competent one. It was fitted with an electronic monitoring system that warned the operator [music] of any problems during the lifting process. Stop and think about that for a moment. This is 1974. [music] Most farm machinery of the era was pure mechanical muscle. belts, chains, hydraulics, and hope. And here's a bead harvester quietly watching its own lifting gear and telling the driver when something was going wrong. That is a strikingly modern idea. Today, every big harvester is packed with sensors and screens. The Hunter [music] was doing the primitive version of that when most tractors didn't even have a decent cab. It enjoyed a fair amount of sales [music] success, and for good reason. It was genuinely advanced for its time. But it was a two row machine in a market that was about to be swept aside by six row European [music] giants. And so a genuinely forward-thinking British harvester slipped [music] through the cracks of history. The hunter had the DNA of a modern machine a full generation early. Forgotten and frankly robbed. Number four, the Verate one-phase bunker harvester, [music] 1974. Now we cross to Holland to the machine that more than any other on this list actually won even if the machine itself has been forgotten. In 1974 in the village of Beerviet in the Dutch province of Zus Flanderin the Ferva 8 family who weren't machinery giants at all but a contracting firm doing the actual harvesting work built something new. It was the first self-propelled [music] one-phase bunker harvester for sugarbeat. And that phrase one phase is the whole revolution in two words. Because up to that point, harvesting beat was a two or three-phase [music] job. One machine or pass topped the beat. Another lifted it, another handled the transport. Multiple machines, multiple people, multiple passes across [music] the same muddy field. The Vervo weight did all of it. topping, harvesting, and carrying [music] the beat in its own onboard bunker in a single pass run by a single person, one machine, one operator. The entire job [music] for a contracting business paid to clear fields fast. That wasn't [music] a neat feature. It was a total rethink of the economics of the harvest. [music] And it worked so well that it became and still is the most efficient way to harvest sugarbeat and other [music] root crops. Every giant tanker harvester rumbling across a beetfield today is a direct descendant [music] of what the Verveet family cooked up in 1974. As the format matured, [music] these machines took on serious hardware. Big truck type engines, including units from Darf mounted in a rear pod to run everything, [music] feeding a large holding tank that could be emptied in seconds into a trailer or straight onto a clamp.
The company Vervi had founded on that 1974 [music] idea is still building beet harvesters today. So why is the original [music] forgotten? Because it won so completely that its own descendants buried it. Nobody remembers the humble first bunker machine. [music] They just take the whole concept for granted. That's the strange fate of the truly influential. The idea survives and the machine that started [music] it disappears. Number three, the Matro six row tool carrier. 1970s. While Britain was still refining single [music] and two row machines, France went big. And the Matro is the machine that shows you just how differently the French thought about the problem. Metrot along with rivals like Maro had already been building large six row trailed harvesters that could tear through crop far faster than anything British farmers were used to. Then they took the leap to self-propelled and the design they landed on in the 1970s was genuinely clever. The tool carrier. [music] Picture a long frame like a rolling spine. Out at the very front on that frame hung the topper. Behind it slung under the frame. Between the front wheels and the much larger rear wheels sat the lifting gear. The cab perched high up to one side for a commanding [music] view. the engine, the cleaning turbines, the unloading elevator.
Everything hung off that single central frame. It was less a harvester in the old sense and more a purpose-built carrier that [music] held every tool the job needed in one integrated layout, and it was properly engineered. Hydraulic drive ran all the topping and lifting [music] mechanisms.
Hydrostatic steering made a big six row machine surprisingly manageable. The topper used flails to knock the tops off, [music] then either blew them onto cleared ground or shot them through a spout into a trailer. Turbines scrubbed the beats clean on their way to the elevator. Some even carried a small [music] tank for a degree of independent running. By the 1980s, this tool carrier layout had become the [music] go-to machine for big farms and contractors, and it stayed in production in various forms well into the 1990s. It was fast, it was capable, and it cleared serious acreage.
But it was eventually [music] killed off not by a failure, but by the tanker harvester that grew up alongside it. A dominant machine in its [music] day and now a shape you only see in old field day photographs. Brilliant engineering quietly [music] retired. Number two, the Rem RBM230 1970s. [music] Staying in France for a machine whose best trick almost nobody used, which somehow makes it more fascinating, not less. The Recam [music] RBM230 was one of those big six row self-propelled [music] tool carrier machines cut from the same cloth as the Matrot. It topped, it lifted, [music] it cleaned, it unloaded. Everything you'd expect from a serious French harvester of the era. But Recon built in a genuinely forwardthinking feature. On the RBM230, the sugarbeat lifting gear could be removed entirely and swapped out for potato lifting equipment or attachments [music] for other crops. In other words, they designed a convertible harvester. The idea was pure engineering elegance. Why let a hugely expensive self-propelled machine sit idle once the beat was in when you could re-equip it and send it back out for a completely different harvest? One expensive machine, multiple crops, a far better return on the investment. It's the kind of modular thinking that sounds thoroughly modern. The same logic behind today's tool carrier tractors and multicrop platforms. [music] Recam was there in the 1970s. And here's the delicious twist. In practice, hardly anyone actually [music] did it.
Most farmers and contractors bought the machine, used it as a beet harvester, and kept it as a beet harvester [music] for its entire working life. The clever convertability was there on the spec sheet, admired by everyone, and used by almost no one, which is [music] its own kind of brilliance. A machine so far ahead of how people actually farmed that its best feature went to waste. [music] Ramm themselves went on to real success. Their later RBM 300 tanker machine with dependable ge lifting gear in a cab bought in from Claus became genuinely popular in both Britain and Europe. But it's the convertible RBM230. The machine whose cleverest idea the world quietly ignored that earns its place on this list. Number one, the standon Challenger SP6, late 1980s. And for number one, the most bittersweet machine of them all. A British harvester that was so far ahead of its time [music] it accidentally designed the future then failed anyway. By the late 1980s, Standon, the company behind the Rapid and the Solar Beat, [music] could see exactly where the industry was heading. The six row European machines were winning. So [music] Standon swung for the fences and built the Challenger SP6, their own six row self-propelled beat harvester. And look at the layout they [music] chose. Because this is the whole story. The topping and lifting gear went right at the front ahead of the cab so the operator could watch the crop being lifted and work cleanly right into the field corners. Behind the cab in the middle of the machine sat a central holding tank. And at the very back sat the engine. Four large equal-sized powered wheels carried [music] the whole thing. If you know modern beet harvesters, your jaw should be on the floor right now because that is exactly the layout of the machines working in [music] fields today. Lifting gear up front, cab, central tank, rear engine, big driven wheels, stand drew the blueprint for the modern tanker harvester in the late 1980s. This same basic design became the basis for the successful tanker machines that took over the industry towards the end of the 1990s from names like Tim Vervawait Agrifac [music] Homer and Recam. So the Challenger SP6 should be a legend. Instead, it's a footnote. [music] Why? Two reasons, both painfully practical. It wasn't altogether reliable, and reliability is everything when you've got a narrow, muddy autumn window to clear a whole crop. and its holding tank simply wasn't big enough to take proper advantage of the brilliant layout, canceling out the machine's biggest [music] theoretical advantage. Poor sales followed fast, and Standon dropped it almost as quickly as they'd launched it. Not long after, the company gave up on beat harvesters altogether and moved into potato machinery instead. The Challenger SP6 [music] got the architecture of the entire future dead right and got beaten to the finish line by a leaky [music] tank and a few too many breakdowns. Everyone else built fortunes on the shapes stand and sketched first. If any machine on this list deserves the words actually [music] brilliant, it's this one. A genuine glimpse of the future.
