This vlog provides a visually rich introduction to Vishu, though it prioritizes the aesthetic "tourist gaze" over a deeper exploration of the festival's spiritual significance. It serves as a pleasant, if somewhat surface-level, bridge between Western curiosity and Indian tradition.

My First Vishu in Kerala 🇮🇳 | Canadian Experiencing Vishu Festival & TraditionsAdded:
Happy Vishu.
>> Happy Vishu.
>> At Shop we have a Vishu program. So we are going to attend that now.
>> I've never celebrated Vishu. I have no idea what it's all about. Actually >> it's Lord Krishna's birthday.
>> Wedding.
>> Birthday.
>> Birthday. Okay.
>> We're all on our way to Shova.
>> So it's like a new year, right? So for um wish you um somebody the elder in the house will give wish. It's like a bonus uh a coin money uh gift to their uh everybody in the house. Uh that's like a blessing for the whole year. So we are actually going to get that show is giving is residents of that.
>> So we are actually going to get our wish.
>> That's what I got the message in the WhatsApp group. I never attended a vishu here.
>> So we're going to see how it is here.
>> Everyone came dressed up in traditional outfits. You'll notice a lot of cream and gold tones everywhere. That's the kind of style here in Kerala during Vishu. Aminta also wore her traditional sari. At the front they had everything set up really nicely with flowers, fruits, vegetables, and lamps. It's called kani, which means a good sight.
It's something you're supposed to see first for the blessing and a good start for the year.
>> See, it's all decorated nicely. It's for the prosperity for the year.
>> Then they started calling people one by one to come forward and receive money.
It's a small gift they give this day, especially to kids and family members.
But here they were giving to everyone.
It's kind of like how we exchange gifts during Christmas. When we went up, they told us to receive it with both hands.
That's how you show respect here. You don't just take it casually with one hand. I'm starting to slowly learn their culture here. This is a fun tradition.
So, you just have your hands out there and they'll give you a 10 rupee.
It's not ticket, it's cash. I see. You can buy toys now with it.
>> We got to meet a lot of families and spend time talking with them. Everyone is really friendly here.
>> Sweet.
>> So, they give this and a traditional dessert also they will give after this.
>> You can hold it.
your mom over here.
>> Then as usual, it turned into fireworks.
Lots and lots of fireworks. The whole community got involved. They were all doing fireworks together. It wasn't just a short show either. It kept going for a long time, one after another. It's kind of their thing here, especially during celebrations like this. I'm pretty used to it now.
>> You like the fireworks I see?
>> Yes. Should we do more?
One more.
>> So, how was the vishu? First festival, right?
>> Yeah, it was fun. I didn't know what what to expect going in there, but it was really nice. Nice festival.
>> Mainly firecrackers like a Diwali for North Indians. So, Vishu is the firecracker festival for carolines. I mean, every festival is with firecrackers and you must be tired of firecrackers.
>> There's always something with firecrackers and fireworks. I was kind of curious though, there's like there's the rice and everything. Is it um is that >> prosperity? Prosperity, right? Um so that basically this is how it is when they wake up in the morning. Uh because like just like a Christmas this is their lord's birthday. So they wake up they say him they say the prosperity that's what all these kind of food items represents. They want to see this in the morning so that the whole year is good basically. I think that's what it means.
And the elders they give money to each other and the kids so that their whole year will be blessed.
>> Oh okay. Like blessing to us or blessing to them like >> blessing to us. Right. Oh, and you receive money in the morning itself.
It's like throughout the year you will get it like that.
>> Oh, okay.
>> I think that's the meaning.
>> Yeah. So, it was really nice and it was nice to visit with all the people. You get to know uh the community, right?
Especially with these events. There's a lot of familiar faces. You can talk. You actually got to know some new people and >> yeah, it's a nice nice community. It's nice uh uh festival. It it was small. It wasn't really a big one, but >> they never miss out on any festival.
Every opportunity to celebrate something, they're going to celebrate it. whether it's at the mall or just right here in uh Shova.
>> They do a good job doing it, conducting it, coordinating everybody, planning it.
>> Um so including everybody. It's very nice.
>> They don't cheap out on the fireworks. I thought it was over, but then there's like, oh, another round, another round.
>> Life here is really fun. Uh really nice community here. We enjoy living here. Um so this was a small video about a vishu.
I didn't know how big function it is.
So, I just took this short video of it.
Uh, and >> yeah, I hope you guys enjoyed it and we wish you and everyone, all our viewers a happy Vishu.
>> Happy Vishu. And uh yeah, please continue to watch our our channel.
