And it's worse than [music] anyone expected. Across the Yamal and Giden peninsulas  of Siberia, [music] massive craters have been opening up without warning. Some over 50 m wide  and 70 m deep. The cause, perafrost [music] thaw, releasing methane gas trapped underground for  thousands of years. As the Arctic warms at four times the global average rate, [music] perafrost,  ground that has been frozen since the last ice age begins to thaw from the surface down. [music]  When organic material in the perafrost decomposes, it releases methane and CO2. Methane is 80  times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2 over [music] a 20-year period. In some areas,  methane pressure builds beneath the surface until the ground literally bulges upward, [music]  forming hills called pingo before rupturing in a massive explosion, [music] leaving a  crater. Scientists have identified over 7,000 underground methane bubbles in Arctic Siberia  that could rupture [music] at any time. the terrifying feedback loop. More warming [music]  melts more perafrost, releasing more methane, causing more [music] warming. It doesn't stop  on its own.
