Two civilians were injured and rushed to hospital, while dramatic images of flames tearing through the building spread rapidly across social media, intensifying fears that the war next door may now be bleeding directly onto NATO territory.

But officials admitted the military had only minutes to react before impact. Brigadier General Gheorghe Maxim revealed that Romanian forces faced major operational restrictions because they could not legally fire into Ukrainian airspace, a limitation that may have left them powerless to stop the drone in time.
