Russia’s WARNING SHOTS At NATO States Over Romania Drone Drama; ‘Stooping To Lowest…’ | WatchAdded:
Flames erupted over NATO territory. A Russian-made drone slammed into a residential apartment block in Romania, setting off panic, fire, and a diplomatic storm that is now pushed tensions between Moscow and NATO to a dangerous new level. As smoke billowed from the shattered building in Galați and terrified residents fled their homes, Romania accused Russia of violating its territory in the most serious spillover from the Ukraine war so far. But Moscow quickly fired back with its own explosive counter-claim.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova alleged that Western governments and media outlets were deliberately exaggerating the Romania drone incident to shift focus off of what she described as the killing of children in [music] Starobilsk by the Kyiv regime.
>> Speaking to Russian state media outlet TASS, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Romania of using the growing controversy as a political weapon, claiming Bucharest [music] was exploiting the incident to justify shutting down Russia's consulate in Constanța and expelling the Russian Consul General from the country altogether.
But by then, tensions were already spiraling.
The crisis erupted on Friday after a Geran-2 drone, also widely known as the Shahed-136, slammed into a high-rise residential building in the eastern Romanian city of Galați, dangerously close to the Ukrainian border. Within seconds, the drone's explosive payload detonated on impact, [music] triggering a massive fire on the 10th floor as terrified residents scrambled to escape smoke and debris.
Romanian emergency officials said nearly 70 people had to be evacuated in a frantic overnight operation. Two civilians were injured and rushed to hospital, while dramatic images of flames tearing through the building spread rapidly across social media, intensifying fears that the war next door may now be bleeding directly onto NATO territory.
Romania's Defense Ministry later confirmed that F-16 fighter jets had been scrambled the moment the drone was detected. But officials admitted the military had only minutes to react before impact. Brigadier General Gheorghe Maxim revealed that Romanian forces faced major operational restrictions because they could not legally fire into Ukrainian airspace, a limitation that may have left them powerless to stop the drone in time.
Romanian President [music] Klaus Iohannis described the strike as the most serious incident affecting Romanian [music] territory since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Following an emergency national security meeting, Bucharest moved swiftly, announcing the closure of Russia's consulate in Constanța, and formally declaring the Russian Consul General persona non grata.
The diplomatic fallout escalated almost immediately. NATO and European Union leaders rushed to back Romania, condemning what they described as reckless Russian aggression, and warning against any spillover of the Ukraine conflict into alliance territory.
Meanwhile, inside the Kremlin, spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the incident, and as tension soared, Zakharova issued a blunt warning of her own, saying Moscow's response to Romania's diplomatic retaliation would come swiftly.
What began as a single drone strike is now rapidly evolving into a dangerous diplomatic confrontation between Russia and a NATO member state, >> [music] >> raising fresh fears that the war in Ukraine could once again push Europe closer to the edge.
A Russian drone exploding inside NATO territory has triggered alarm bells across Europe and raised fears of a dangerous new phase in the Ukraine war, with the United States and NATO now openly warning Russia after civilians were injured in Romania.
US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker condemned the incident as a reckless incursion into Romanian territory and stressed that Washington stood firmly with its NATO ally.
"We will defend every inch of NATO territory," Whitaker declared, echoing increasingly aggressive warnings from alliance leaders after the strike.
The dramatic incident, which saw a Russian drone crash into a residential apartment block near the Ukrainian border, has intensified speculation about whether the conflict is inching closer to a direct Russia-NATO confrontation.
>> Romania is shooting in this time from this distance watching Russia is the one in the entire being security of the countries in the area, and the um military action, the war it is waging against Ukraine, equally affects all countries on NATO's eastern flank and beyond.
>> Do you think we should be worried and to what extent?
>> As I estimated, as I stated in, in what I said a little earlier, we are not facing a Russian attack on Romania.
However, we must keep in mind that such situations have happened and can happen again.
>> The overnight strike hit the Romanian city of Galați during a large-scale Russian drone assault targeting Ukraine's southern Odessa region across the border.
Romanian authorities said radar systems tracked the drone as it entered the country's airspace before slamming into a 10-story residential building and exploding.
Images from the scene showed burnt concrete, shattered windows, and fire damage on the upper floors of the apartment block. A woman and a child were injured while dozens of residents were evacuated in panic.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also accused Russia of dangerous escalation after speaking with Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă Dănciulescu.
Rutte warned that Moscow's actions posed a threat to the entire alliance and vowed NATO would strengthen its readiness against future drone threats.
Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă Dănciulescu described the incident as the most serious security event on Romanian territory since the Ukraine war began and blamed Russia for complete disregard for international law and NATO citizen safety.
Romania immediately scrambled F-16 fighter jets and dispatched military helicopters as the drone crossed its airspace.
Authorities said the aircraft flew low for several kilometers, making it difficult to intercept without risking civilian casualties.
Romanian officials have since renewed demands for more NATO anti-drone systems, radar networks, and interceptor technology along the alliance's eastern flank.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned the incident showed Russia's willingness to escalate, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Europe to intensify pressure on Moscow before the war spills even further beyond Ukraine's borders.
>> Yes, the the federal government has also just commented publicly on X.
That is happening now in parallel to our meeting here.
Um the the federal chancellor has commented him that he sees uh the uh in the drone in the drone incident in Romania the Russian determination to continue escalating this war.
Um Germany naturally stands firmly by the side of the NATO allies to which Romania belongs. And it shows once again that we all as NATO and as an alliance very determined to uh face the these threats, that we must take the threats on on the eastern flank seriously, and that we we are of course prepared to defend every centimeter of the alliance's territory.
>> In addition, the foreign minister has also already commented on this from New York and put it into perspective.
You will also find this on X that Russia's reckless behavior threatens our collective security and our response can and must simply be unity.
We stand behind our ally and partner Romania and our thoughts are of course with those affected by the drone incident from last night.
And this only gives us cause to further strengthen our European defense within NATO.
