Both the blue dilution gene and the liver gene have to be present at the same time. But that's not what happened at all. The panda pattern is caused by a spontaneous [music] mutation in a gene called KIT, which controls white spotting on the coat. It was first [music] documented in a dog named Lucinka's Francoon Phenom born in [music] 2000. And this mutation is unique to a single GSD bloodline. It cannot be replicated by [music] crossbreeding. Imagine the classic black and tan German Shepherd, but with bold white patches across the chest, belly, collar, and muzzle, covering about [music] 35% of the body. The result is aricolor pattern that genuinely [music] looks like a panda bear in a German Shepherd costume. Researchers at UC Davis [music] School of Veterinary Medicine confirmed this is a purebred phenomenon, just a genetic twist nobody [music] planned for. Because the gene pool is so small, panda shepherds remain extremely rare. But man, are they beautiful. Number three, Blue German Shepherd. And the liver German Shepherd is one that genuinely stops people [music] in their tracks. Sometimes called chocolate, the liver coloration replaces all black pigment with a warm reddish brown.
