[00:01:11]Uh, but then it has a game within its fake OS. Uh, and there's a maybe a bit more going on with the game than the gameplay itself. Oh, yeah. I should let this happen. Beating death.

[00:01:25]Oh, somewhere beyond Blood Rock Mountain and through the deadly valleys of Gravewood, there it lies, known only by legend as the forbidden dungeon. It is said that any soul dare to plunge.

[00:01:44]>> So, it's uh it this game looks like it's from 1995. It is from 2026, but they made it to look like a game from 1995.

[00:02:23]>> So, >> forbidden solitaire, >> it's kind of got like a um we saw the TV glow or whatever that movie's called, like just like, you know, it's a cheesy 1990s media paired up with an actual sense of foroting, an actual sense of like mystery, and they do a good job of capturing that side of things. But the main game is this sort of fake dungeon crawler. Fake fake as in like I'm not deciding where to go inside this dungeon. It is all just presented as a story and and it'll give me these like text bubbles that tell me what's going on. Your knees and hands ache as you scrabble your way through the tunnel's many twists and turns. A foul pungent odor overwhelms the senses. You need to get out of here. At last, your spirits lift as you spot a great ahead. You pray it leads to a way out. charging through the smell toward the great you find it resists your attempts to open it. It's locked. Well, I bet if I played Oh, I'm click one more button here. So, solitire I can get through it. Um, so yeah, it's forbidden solitaire. The game play is this solitire sort of thing. Uh, and it's it's pretty basic. They introduce some complexities, but the complexities don't really add depth to the strategy.

[00:03:36]It's just there's like more going on.

[00:03:38]Uh, and I'll try to explore some of that as we play here. Yeah, even calling it solitire is almost like >> yes >> overselling the game itself like the core game mechanic because it's missing some key components of solitaire but >> right it's it's you know it's a you know it is technically solitire in that you know it's a game you play a card game you play by yourself and solitaire covers a whole wide spectrum of those but there is like an official like you know canon solitire this is not that this is just like hey I have a jack so if there was a 10 or a nine up here oh sorry a 10 or a queen up here. I could click on that. It would get added here, get removed from the playfield up here, and I can keep going. But since there's not, I can uh I do have a couple options here. This is my special move that I can build up by playing these cards. I actually already have it built up from my last match. So, I'll just hit this.

[00:04:48]That's for battle. This is not a battle.

[00:04:50]This is just a normal sort of action solitire moment. So, there are going to be moments where you're battling against another player. Another player, but like a boss. Um, so this is just like one of these moments where you don't want to waste a card like this. You just hang on to that. So, in this moment, we're just going to click this and see if we get another card. And then there we go.

[00:05:07]There's the two. And there's these. It's almost like since it's in the trappings of a dungeon crawler, it's almost like these are skill checks where you have to play these little games of solitire before progressing, right?

[00:05:18]>> Yeah. And it's you know, I think the game is definitely more about its presentation, its style, its um you know, the the the feeling of being in 1995 or playing a game from that time.

[00:05:29]And that is like there's a meta layer here where I'm playing as that character Will Robera and uh they got this game in modern day and they remember it from their childhood. Their parents wouldn't let them play it. There was news stories about people playing it and dying and that stuff's getting revealed to you as well. So it's like this storytelling mechanism and the soliter is almost a uh a sort of pacing modifier of like let's throw in some stuff to like keep things going. Uh >> yeah, just part of the vehicle. just part of the vehicle, right? It's not this is not like you could look at this and you could see see like, oh, I is it like Batro, like one of these games that takes a simple game uh or a game that can be simplified and then adds a ton of layers on it. Like in fact, these are even called jokers. Um, and it's like, no, it's it's not like that at all.

[00:06:16]Although it does present itself that way.

[00:06:20]>> It's funny. It's like we kind of forget that jokers are part of like a deck of cards. It's like it's part of the parlance of a deck of card. Not specifically to Bellatro, but it's like >> yes, but at this at this point like yeah like uh there are so many games that do that because of Batro that it's it is both those things at the same time.

[00:06:39]>> Uh all right, let's see here. What is this one? Divine flush change the suit of all playable cards to match the target card. Also cleans cleanses some malign effects. I actually haven't found a reason to do this yet. There's maybe Oh, like I guess there's a couple times where there's like a lock on a thing that can only be opened up if you play a certain suit. I guess that makes sense.

[00:06:57]>> That or later you'll get something where you play that and then you can kill everything of a certain suit.

[00:07:02]>> Ah, okay. Perfect.

[00:07:03]>> So, it just blitzes through all your cards. It's pretty satisfying.

[00:07:07]>> Uh, I could go to the five or the >> This game does show flashes of that like those satisfying combos. Have you gotten over 10 in this game, by the way? 10 combos.

[00:07:15]>> I don't know if I have. I think I think I've Oh, I think I did once, actually.

[00:07:18]It did once cuz it gave me like some not like notification that I did.

[00:07:21]>> Yeah, we got to make that a goal. The quick luck to uh >> All right, let's pop that. Yeah, let's see here.

[00:07:32]I'm a uh I'm a card game sicko. Um really really loved Bellatro was my game of the year that year. It's definitely not one of those.

[00:07:42]But it's still it's riffing on and playing with the game solitire um and [ __ ] with it in a in a fun way, but it doesn't get like I wouldn't say it gets mechanically complex until 3/4 of the way through for me.

[00:07:56]>> I uh I agree. Like this is just it's kind of mindless, but not in a way that's um not it's not like outright bad or anything like that. It's just it's just like, yeah, we're we're just kind of poking through here and doing some stuff in this card game and then I get to see the next little vignette and something cool happens in between these things and then you do a boss fight that's a little bit more interesting, but not that different from this. So, yeah.

[00:08:24]I want to learn how to do the 3D modeling that they kind of have going on in this game.

[00:08:40]So, we can just keep doing this. Uh, now there there is like a fail state here.

[00:08:44]If we get through all these cards, we will fail. Um, and then basically what happens is you get a game over and then you come right back here and start this battle over. So, it's um a very low stake situation. That's another thing.

[00:08:58]It's like, oh, they just kind of want you to see all the cool stuff they made.

[00:09:01]And I think what really curious this game is, it is cool stuff. I think it's pretty cool. Uh I like I like seeing what this game has to offer in terms of here's what we remember from being like from 1995 and playing games at that time and or like watching news stories about the moral panic and stuff. And I think they do a good job of all of that. So I forgive a lot of these things that aren't as engaging.

[00:09:25]And there's like some I don't know with games like this when you have FMB elements or anything like voice acting you don't it doesn't need to be good in games like this but it is here it actually is like extremely solid.

[00:09:36]>> Um the I think there's like a character she's like the main character that's >> sort of like the past is retold through her whoever is voicing that does a really solid job.

[00:09:48]All right. So yeah this kind of goes uh there's also a shop here. So, uh, last time we got some I love this.

[00:09:55]>> Love this. This whole style here is good stuff. Uh, you know, you start off with just your hand and I just keep adding these things and, uh, doesn't look like there's anything actually in the store right now, but uh, I've I have purchased all these things and had them had them installed. They get doled out um, in the store like one or two things at a time.

[00:10:14]I think it's probably going to be pretty linear. It's not like random like, oh, you oh, you're just going to you're going to build your own uh way of playing or anything like that. Again, I think they are just trying to make something that is a vehicle for the content.

[00:10:40]>> It's one of those games where like you don't need a strategy. You could just click and click and click and get through it. But if you're doing it right and thinking about cards that you're uncovering or what cards you can use that have the most cards they couldn't cover, that's when you can start, you know, really getting into those longer combos. Yes.

[00:10:58]>> And then there is like that undo button.

[00:11:00]I don't know if you >> I just did it. So I just played something when I could have actually played something on the field. You saw it shake and it lets you know that hey, you can undo it. And now we can hit that. I think we now we know the next thing is going to be an ace. So, that's handy. Um, oh man, I should have played the three instead. I should have played the three instead, but oh well. Uh, all right.

[00:11:24]That's how it goes sometimes. Here's my question about this game, and I haven't seen this answered anywhere. Are all of these puzzles for each of these like encounters and stuff, are they actually all solvable?

[00:11:36]>> Yeah, because the real game Solitaire, every game of Solitaire is a solvable problem, right?

[00:11:45]>> Yeah, double check that actually. Yeah, go ahead and uh let's actually answer that cuz people yell at us in the comments as that's not true.

[00:12:16]>> Yeah. There's 1 million different deals of Freell that you can play and only one of them is unsolvable.

[00:12:23]>> So, it's true, but it depends on the kind of solitire. So, like Klondike, which is like the standard kind, only one in five of those is impossible.

This guy has been great or the guy like this, but there's a good bit early on where basically you fight this first zombie like five times. It's really good. Uh, finally you see it attached to the chains end. A bound prisoner weeps as they hang inverted, their blood dripping down into the abyss below. Oh no. As you spot them, the bound prisoner begins to shake more violently. With a bloody burst, a stream of maggots pours from their eyes and mouth, their cries now muffled. With a visceral crack, a Leviathan maggot savagely breaks through the prisoner's chest. Its long serpentine body lashes wildly before shri striking toward you.

[00:13:57]You guys use a term um and it I kept thinking of it while playing this which is gross up.

[00:14:05]>> Yeah. So gross up is from Ren and Stimpy animators. Uh like when they would have the characters look disgusting in a close-up, they called them grossups. And uh yeah, that's something that a lot of animators carried through and now it's like definitely widely known in uh artistic circles for sure. All right, so now there's new stuff in the shop. Uh kryonite ring. Uh, let's see. Plus 5% chance to inflict a critical hit. Price is 100. Yeah, I'm going to >> crit.

[00:14:33]Uh, and then let's see here see the Lex Telenovous. T Yeah, Telenos. Uh, 10% chance to counterattacks for three damage. Both of these are good. I can only afford one right now. Let's go with Critite.

[00:15:05]So, this is a battle. 25 health. He's got one shield. That means anytime I do uh an attack, the first point of damage will not hurt them. We'll show what why that matters.

[00:15:35]>> Oh, okay. So now, uh because he's infested with maggots, this is not the first time I've seen these. Uh when when played, this card explodes, inflicting one damage upon you. I kind of feel like I don't really have a choice, though. I still have to kind of play them.

[00:15:49]>> Yeah. So, it's like a if you have cards that get rid of things like your mana storm, right? That's where you could clean things up.

[00:15:54]>> Exactly. Yeah. I kind of don't want to waste it right away, but I might do it anyhow. Let's see here. Let's get this first.

And especially when you like foresee that and begin like thinking ahead and you know, you don't have perfect information about your cards, but you do have like probability. You like you can kind of sense how many card I mean you could just know if you want to keep track of that stuff, but that's not how I'm going to play this game. I'm going to like sort of feel it out. Be like I've seen a bunch of eights. I'll try to like lean in this direction instead since I've already played a lot of eights. I'll go down instead. And uh that that's been a pretty handy way to play so far.

[00:18:15]Uh so I've not defeated him yet. So I cleared all those cards. Doesn't matter.

[00:18:19]We're trying to defeat him. I could have hit this button at any point and it would have given me a whole new hand. Uh you can do that once per battle, but we were going pretty well there. So I figured I'll just see it through. And now we'll keep going at this point. Uh let's get that.

I really want to do the um the the like the bruise and braids the uh British people are doing at bars where these dads go to bars and they drink and they practice uh braiding hair so they can be better braiding their their daughter's hair. I'm like, "Ah, I need to do that so bad. It's I have long hair. You think I'd be better at it." I am not. I'm terrible.

[00:30:00]We didn't have a picture of him, but we had these flowers dead at his computer, but the circumstances around his death were nothing short of extraordinary with no trace.

[00:30:13]There's more stuff in there. It's It's worth watching. Uh I I do want to see what else they have in terms of this mystery. Uh what's really going on. Um I I imagine that this um this OS like more stuff will happen in here, but I you know that that's kind of been the extent of it so far is the messages and then the game.

[00:30:40]>> I will say the game crashed on me at one point and it opened up like a error message and I was I was like, "Okay, is this a bit? Are they doing a thing?"

[00:30:47]Like I I think it was actually an error message.

[00:30:50]>> Uhhuh. But you don't know.

[00:30:51]>> Nothing nothing crazy like uh like an inscription where you get up from the table and go around. It's nothing like that in this. But um the messages from the the player characters like sister and stuff keep escalating which is it's really fun. Uh but yeah, that's Forbidden Solitaire. Uh I I'm into it.

[00:31:08]Like I you know it's um I am always down for a game that tries to like be mechanically deep. When a game's not trying to do that, it's trying to do something else. I'm ready to meet it on its level. And I was glad I did that here because it's um there's just yeah, like you said, catnip with all all the references and sort the visual references and then the explicit reference to like John Romero and Richard Garrett and stuff like that is always fun.
