Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec Empire, built on a lake in what is now modern Mexico City. The city featured an innovative urban design with canals resembling Venice and floating farms called chinampas, which housed approximately 200,000 people in ancient times. When the Spanish arrived in 1519, they were amazed by its beauty, describing it as the most beautiful city on Earth. However, the city was subsequently destroyed by the Spanish conquest, and its ruins now lie beneath the modern metropolis of Mexico City.
