In 1968, Australian geomorphologist Jim Bowler discovered the cremated remains of a woman (Mungo Lady) at Lake Mungo in New South Wales, followed by the deliberate burial of a man (Mungo Man) in 1974. These discoveries challenged the scientific consensus that Aboriginal people had arrived in Australia no more than 20,000 years ago. After decades of dating disputes, a 2003 study involving three universities and CSIRO concluded the remains were approximately 40,000 years old, more than doubling the previously accepted timeline of human occupation in Australia. The site also yielded nearly 460 fossilized human footprints, the largest collection of Ice Age footprints found anywhere in the world.
