Lifeboat conversion Ep.165 Cockpit take two....

[00:00:00]Hello and welcome back to a new episode for the conversion of lifeboat Hygge.

[00:00:04]Um, there's lots going on here in groundworks and putting new walls up around the yacht basin.

[00:00:13]Um, they're going to make the gate wider as well.

[00:00:18]And so there's a bit of noise in the background.

[00:00:20]Um, I'm still working on the cockpit.

[00:00:24]I've started making the gas locker.

[00:00:30]Working on the wall as well. Using the old hatch to kind of keep all that in place cuz with the heat, even though they're composite planking, they're kind of warping all over the place. So I'm masticating everything into place.

[00:00:54]Um, an update what's going on in the cockpit today. Very windy.

[00:00:59]Um, I have made the um, partitions for the gas locker.

[00:01:06]Um, of course I need to cut the hatch in. I've got some new hatches for that.

[00:01:11]I've done a the first layer of GRP on the floor and up the sides just to make it stronger and waterproof.

[00:01:22]Um, you can see the holes where I've put some expanding foam behind that little wall just to make it super duper strong.

[00:01:32]Um, quite a bit of the shelf is in here as well.

[00:01:36]>> [snorts] >> But I need to finish this all off first before I can put the rest of the wall wall in as otherwise I can't reach those bits.

[00:01:46]So I am Yeah, it's it's a lot more work than the other side like I said before, but it's going to be good I'd say.

[00:01:56]I still have to do my shore power, get that out there and move it to when the wall is in.

[00:02:04]And that bit is, like I said, that's my access from the utility room.

[00:02:14]Um back in the shed, still working on the door and there's some urgency happening with that because I am giving up the shed the end of this month. So, I've got um 2-week window to get all of this sorted, which is should be more than enough time.

[00:02:33]Um I need to make sure everything's square on the door.

[00:02:37]Like I said last time, I've got 50-mil glass tape that needs to go on this edge all around just to beef it up a bit cuz, as you can see, that is about 4-5 mil thick.

[00:02:53]Which is um should be strong enough, but I just like to bulk it out a bit more.

[00:02:58]And then what else I need to do is fill this little lip with some thick and stuff. I brought my tub of colloidal silica over, which is nice and strong if I make that into quite a thick mixture with the polyester, that will do a nice filling job and then it's a question of fairing that all in.

[00:03:22]I'll probably give the top a clear coat of polyester still just to get rid of the the bits of match you can still see.

[00:03:33]So, it becomes smooth like that.

[00:03:36]>> [snorts] >> And then I can paint it and take it on board. Um luckily, it looks like the heat wave is going to last a bit longer, so it won't be a problem taking the two old doors out and get this one fitted.

[00:03:51]And uh yeah, I'm trying to get that G R P work done today, which like I said should be possible. We'll have a look.

[00:04:02]I do enjoy working with the uh polyester cuz it's so quick and easy. Even the measuring of it is uh easy enough. You just kind of guestimate how much hardener you put in and it will go off and it goes off quite quickly compared to epoxy.

[00:04:24]I've got two sides done, this long one, this top one. I've also got a thick layer of clear polyester on the top, which makes it nice and glossy.

[00:04:39]And uh I'll have to wait for this to go off, which will be quite quick in this weather anyway. Do the turn the door around and do the other two sides.

[00:04:49]And then we're pretty close to finishing.

[00:04:54]After having done some bits on the door in the shed, I'm back on board as you can see and I mixed some two-pack epoxy primer to prime up this bit of the bulkhead that I've done.

[00:05:10]And the outside was not that important, but the inside is cuz as there's a shelf there and it's going to be hard to get in there. It's much easier to paint that now, of course.

[00:05:25]So, it's had a coat of white epoxy primer and then it will have a top coat of epoxy paint, again two-pack, and that should make it a lot lighter and easier to see what's actually in there.

[00:05:38]And um after the paint is dry, I'll actually have the opportunity to cut the opening for the hatch for the gas locker.

[00:05:51]So, I can put put my gas bottle back in and I can actually do some cooking.

[00:05:57]Although, with this hot weather, who wants to be cooking inside?

[00:06:02]But, uh it's a lovely day. Progress is being made.

[00:06:06]So, I'm happy with that.

[00:06:09]I'm at a point where I've cut out the opening for the hatch for the uh gas locker.

[00:06:17]But, still needs a bit more painting out on the inside.

[00:06:20]But, um the hatch fits in nicely now.

[00:06:26]So, um that means that the gas bottle can go back in at some point after I've done the the painting out, of course.

[00:06:36]And, um yeah, still a bit of painting to be done. But, with the nice weather as it is, that shouldn't be a problem.

[00:06:44]And, yeah.

[00:06:47]Ha, just getting on with things.

[00:06:49]I have turned the door over and it's quite funny to see how transparent the um GRP is. On bigger boats, sometimes if you open a locker, you can actually see the water kind of hitting the boat and it's a bit weird.

[00:07:08]But, uh it's definitely strong enough. So, I turned it over cuz this side, you might be able to see, is still quite rough because the pattern of the glass fiber cloth is actually still coming through.

[00:07:22]So, what I'm going to do is what I did on the other side and that's put some um polyester resin on it to basically fill it and make it smooth. If there's a good layer on there, I can sand it. I don't particularly want to sand this back cuz I don't want to sand through the glass and make it thinner. If anything, I want it stronger and thicker. So, I'm just going to basically brush a clear coat of power polyester resin on it. I did two coats on the other side.

[00:07:52]I don't know if I can lift it. I can.

[00:07:55]And you can see that's really that is literally like glass now. So, that can be sanded and painted.

[00:08:02]I still have to fill the sides as well.

[00:08:04]That's going to be one of the last jobs cuz I have to make some thickened polyester for that.

[00:08:23]In the shed, I am filling the side of the door all the way around. What I'm using is polyester resin, some colloidal silica powder to thicken it and just filling that. So, all the wood is sealed.

[00:08:40]The edges are sealed.

[00:08:43]Then I can fill in fairings.

[00:08:46]Um and this lip at the moment is 50 mil.

[00:08:50]I'm going to cut that slightly back, probably to 35.

[00:08:54]I don't need that much of an overlap.

[00:08:56]And another important thing to do on this is round off these corners cuz they are sharp as anything now.

[00:09:04]So, um yeah. Next thing to do is turn the door over so I can do the other two sides.

[00:09:10]I've also done the inside of the uh opening for the window.

[00:09:17]And then we're pretty close to cutting it all to size, sanding it, and uh give it a coat of paint, and then we can start working on the door opening on the boat itself, get that to size, and hang the door. That would be a great job to get done.

[00:09:37]We are at the end of another video and there's some building work going on in the background cuz they are going to make the gate bigger and uh get the side sorted cuz they were all telegraph poles and they just rotted away so they're making it into concrete.

[00:09:55]But back to the work I've been doing, I've near enough got the wall for the cockpit sorted.

[00:10:02]It's primered. I cut the hole where the um shore power goes into. I need to mark out the hatch to go back in there.

[00:10:12]Um this hatch will be replaced. It's only there to keep um the gas locker dry.

[00:10:19]And uh yeah, it's coming along nicely. The next job will be of course finishing all this off which shouldn't take that long and then get the door sorted.
