Tipping culture in Cyprus differs from countries like the UK and US not primarily due to wage differences, but because of significant economic changes including rising cost of living, particularly housing costs that have increased fivefold in eight years, and the influx of wealthier foreign residents and investors that have altered local economic dynamics, making tipping appreciated but not expected.

Why Cyprus Doesn’t Have a Tipping Culture — And Why It’s More Complicated Than You Think | Cyprus |Hinzugefügt:
No, there's no tipping culture and you know it's not so much about the wages as such. It's the fact of things have changed massively. Um I would and even for me like I I have to really think about how much I'm spending. I'm very much on a budget. I also don't have regular money coming in.
So, it's very much a problem. And I'm probably spending maybe £500 a month more than I was when I was living in the UK. Um, and that depends on the style of property. I would say my food bill is double. Uh, just to hazard a guess. Um, and I'm not buying anything great. I'm not buying booze. I'm not buying meat on a regular basis really, but the quality food is obviously 10 million times better. So you you do get what you pay for. Um I know people who moved here maybe nine years ago. They were paying £200 a month for their rent. Uh they're in the same apartment now 9 years later.
They're not paying that. They're paying like a thousand. Um and there's a woman downstairs from me here. She's been paying 200 quid apparently for the last 12 years. Um so yeah, depends who your landlord is, doesn't it? what the situation is. So um so no it's because people have come into the country it's because people who are much richer than me have come into the country and that has just changed the dynamics of what we've got here. So, um, the deal with tipping is it's appreciated, but it's not expected. And you know, that salary people were on was okay 5 years ago, but it's not okay now. And there's a lot of reasons for that, I
