This video demonstrates a woodcarving technique for creating block-style raised lettering by carefully removing wood along the walls of the lettering while preserving the background, using stop cuts at corners to protect the grain and creating angle cuts across the grain to achieve clean, sharp edges and corners.

Raised Lettering - 5 Block Letters part 1Ajouté :
our second lettering is a little bit different in that's very blocky and if you remember I was going to just take away these bits here and stop at this line there to sort of imply an edge so whereas these bits are quite similar to what we've just done this bit here is rather different and I want to show you a technique which is I think going to be quite useful let's say that this is the letter that want to carve and this is a space we're trying to take out and if we were to project it down to the bottom line it would be something like this so this would be down into the wood and that would be the background there what we can do and it we have to be careful because of the wedge effect we can set in a little bit here and chop down I'm not being very efficient with this but to give you an idea to chop down like that on one side and carefully chop down on the other like this until we're actually at the at the background and what we've left so what we've left We've Come Down the Walls like that and to the background and then we've left this a little bit in the middle here and it's this bit we can then clear out so we're actually at the background scored in so we've got our walls and we've got our background without removing anything in between and depending on how close they are and how how far apart we've got more or more or less background but that's a technique to sort of chop away down the wall very carefully because otherwise you'll burst this out and then clean up this bit in the middle so let me show you that method in action I've got various stages going on here let's start at the beginning so what I did was between the narrow bits of the lettering I stabbed in like that and like that made an angle cut and po this little bit out across the Grain and I finished off the end where it meet the surface with the skew chisel now that's as deep as that's going to go because the letters are up close but where you've got a space in between this wall here will go further back down into the background so it's a deeper wall there shallower here so to make this uh here what I did was I I started off by putting a stop cut in those Corners to protect the grain then I made my Cuts Like This and like this here and down in this way and let me do that a bit more with this chisel coming down this way if it was a wide area I might split this up like this chop it across like that and then I'll take my gouge either a bent gouge or whatever I can get in there and I'll remove this bit here so now here I'm down at the background so you will need narrower tools at some point you know because these are quite narrow area so I can nibble that back down here make sure that's square and at an angle come down here and then and clean that out here so just as with the last lettering we've got two edges we've got this edge here where the letter of the surface meets uh the wall going down and then we've got right down the back we've got this other Corner other line where the wall meets the background so we want to make sure those are clean as we go along so I will check that over in a bit but that's the idea there's another one over here that I've I started to pushing down like this now where we've got more space into the be like there you can push this wall back up to the be but of course that's going to be different as we come around here later and we can nibble this back a little bit so I'm going to work my way similarly just through here whatever whatever that works out at um those will be much more shallow than the background that's what we'll get geometrically that's the important I'm going to start by putting little stop cut on each of the internal Corners like this that's the corner of the Chisel pushing in that's to protect everything bumping out because what's important is to get this nice sharp edge so let's start here so there's that wall now I'm going to stab in this here and then the angle Wall comes down here like this because it's with the grain it's much easier I don't need the Mallet but you have to be careful doesn't just roll you do need to be careful about cleaning up so I'm taking those bits out you see now the these this is a little bit wider than this bit here and probably geometrically it does go down to the to the back to the uh background but I'm I'm just going to not try and do that I'm just going to come down to valley there and then we take this bit off here it's probably better done with a skew chisel so just push that in there so this is a little bit of insided lettering really I'm taking out a a v Grove very much like I would if I was ins sizing this let's just clear that up so what's important I think is to make sure that these Corners are nice and sharp here while I'm ated I'll take this out of here again this won't come back down to the background here because it's not wide enough where are we clean up these bits so nice sharp edges sharp root down the bottom here nice Corners okay so I will do all the insides and uh where I can and then I'm left really with the bits that have the curves on
