RC aircraft power systems involve trade-offs between turbine engines and electric ducted fans (EDFs), with turbines offering longer flight times and more realistic flight characteristics but higher costs and maintenance requirements, while EDFs provide better throttle response and are more accessible for hobbyists; the choice depends on budget, desired flight duration, and pilot experience level.

Added:What's up, fellas? Welcome back. Um, hope you guys are doing good. It's been a minute. Um, yeah, I took a little time off and, uh, it's been busy around here doing stuff, waiting for it to rain. Um, we finally got the first amount of rain what, last night that we've gotten really substantially in few weeks. Uh, the grass has been crunchy. Uh, it's been super hot. That's why I'm in the house tonight because it's nice and cool in here. It was 104 outside today and, uh, the shop is rather warm. So, I figured I'd sit in here tonight and talk to you guys and have, uh, Mr. Jason Hill, as you guys all know, with the big B-52. Uh, he's going to be in here shortly. Um, talked to him in text just a few minutes ago.
He said, "Sorry, I'm running a little behind." So, maybe he's getting his stuff ready or unpacking a trailer or working on an airplane. I don't know which. Um, but, uh, he'll be in here shortly. I said, "Well, just let me know when you're ready. We'll pull him in."
So, how you guys been doing, man? Um, glad to see all of you uh back in here tonight hanging out with me. Um, sorry I took a little bit of time off. Like I said, just been kind of busy and uh been working a lot, trying to stay busy. Uh, I have got the Super Chipmunk pretty much almost finished. I'll say almost because I've still got to hook up a few uh linkages, but all the servos are installed and uh it's it's pretty ready to go. Um except for throwing some batteries in it and doing a test flight.
And I'm not much on getting out there flying at 104 to 110 degrees, no more than I am flying in the wind. I mean, it's like we can't catch a break around here, guys. We go from windy days to amazing hot and then you have gnats and bugs flying all around your head while you're trying to land an airplane and trying to get in your eyes and your ears and yeah. So, uh just hadn't been conducive to it. Um I was supposed to help a friend of mine work on his stuff a couple weekends ago and I told him I said, "Look, man, I love you, but I ain't working in 110 degree temperatures. I'm gonna sit in the house where it's cool." Um, so yeah. So that's what I've been doing. They're calling for more rain here. I think uh what Wednesday night, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, which we need it desperately.
We're about 12 in below our normal for this time of year, which the corn and everything around here looks pitiful.
But uh hopefully in the next few days, we'll get some more rain and it'll start to tighten things up. But I appreciate you guys. Some of you guys checked in on me want to know if I was doing okay, if I was still alive. And yes, I am. And um I appreciate all you guys for uh reaching out to me and uh making sure I was all right. Um just goes to show who you are and your character. I appreciate all of you because uh I'm going tell you without you guys, I wouldn't be here. I mean um you're the reason I keep coming back just to if nothing else just to touch base with you, to hang out, talk a little bit, chat it up. And uh Tomas got up with me and he asked me, he said, "Uh, would you like to get Jason back on the show?" I said, 'Absolutely, man. I mean, he he's he's the man. And that big uh B-52 is absolutely gorgeous. He just got back uh Sunday from Jets over Kentucky, I believe he said. So, he's actually literally jetlagged. Um so, he's still recuperating. Uh let's see.
Mountain said, "I painted my 90mm Freewank F16 V2 in the Arctic Aggressor." Hey man, that's awesome. I'm glad that that I love that scheme.
That's one of my most favorite schemes.
I love Arctic Camo and my F-16 90mimeter is also um painted the same color. Um and I did it all and made it look really good. So, without further ado, um we have Mr. Jason. He just popped in. Let me get him in here for you guys. What are you doing, man?
>> Hey, how's it going?
>> Good. How are you doing?
>> Uh, just out in the shop.
>> I hear you. Well, at least at least it's probably cooler in your shop than it is in mine, man. That's why I said I couldn't do it tonight, you know.
>> Oh, yeah. It's It's all right out here.
It's It's 103, I believe, outside, but in the shop's okay.
>> Yeah, it's been 104 here today, and it's just been absolutely crazy heat, man.
It's like I can't stand. And then the humidity, too. Uh George tells me I don't know heat and humidity until I live in Florida. [laughter] So, you know, but I said, "Well, you're living between the ocean and a swamp, man. What do you expect?" You know, >> man, I I grew up in Houston and I spent a lot of time in Louisiana. Six years in Louisiana. So, we got a little bit of heat and humidity.
>> Yeah, just a little bit. Yeah. Y'all got a lot of swamp areas down there, too, don't you? Uh, I live in Oklahoma now, but yeah, Louisiana's got a ton of swamp area.
>> Yeah. So, yeah, you definitely got the humidity down in that area. But yeah, so uh before I get get into this with you, man, I was going to show the guys. So, guys, as you can see, these are the new Jolly Rodger shirts that uh Tamas has over at Legend Hobby. And I actually got one here so I can show it to you better so I don't have to model it and everything. This is the back of it, guys. And if you can see all that, they really they look really really cool. Um, love the scheme on these. The arms of them actually has the Jolly Roger, all the names of the pilots. You got the flag on this arm. Um, these are the newest shirts from Legend Hobby. And and if you hadn't got one, guys, you better get it because they these aren't going to last long, I don't think, because uh everybody loves this scheme. Um, and so I told him, I said, "I'll definitely show that on here tonight." And, uh, again, don't forget he's he's now carrying the FR Sky servos. So, if any of you guys need those, uh, jump in on those and get you some of those, too, because those are really nice. That's what I put in this Super Chipmunk, and I'm very impressed by what I see. So, um, yeah, very happy with that. Um, so how So, other than that, man, uh, what you working on? What's been going on? I know you said you got back from Jets over Kentucky, right? Yeah, I just got home from Jets over Kentucky uh Sunday.
Uh so the Yeah, the B-52 is still in the trailer.
>> I got you.
>> There's Man, I've got too many projects around this shop out here. Um I don't know what the Well >> Yeah, give us a tour, man. Don't be Don't be >> Well, >> we all love seeing other hangers. This is an old model from Top Gun Arrow called the Interceptor.
>> Oh, sweet.
>> Um, I had a 120 mm Dynamax in here for a while. I flew it like that for several seasons, but right now it's got a K85 in there.
>> Wow.
>> It's got a couple flights on the 85.
This is my first attempt at making a fuel tank. So, I I made this fuel tank and it's been working. Um, but right now the nose gears out of it.
>> I >> So what prompted you to make make your own tank?
>> I honestly curiosity to see if I could.
>> I got you. So would you what? Did you cast it out of something particular?
What did you do it out of?
>> It's uh what is that resin?
Um West Systems. West Systems epoxy >> is the resin I used. And I I made a mold. I 3D printed a mold. I actually went a little bit larger than I needed.
Actually, a lot of larger than I needed for the fuel tank. I've got a lot of room.
>> Um I could cut the I could cut it down by a third and still have plenty of fuel in that airplane.
>> So, what are you getting flight time out of that size tank?
>> I right now I think my last flight was around six minutes.
>> Wow. Okay.
>> But I'm not I'm not using all the fuel up.
>> Yeah. So, >> um, the main reason I put a turbine in it, I had 120 mm DMAX on 12s.
>> Okay.
>> Uh, and I was getting three minute flights.
>> Yeah.
>> It had plenty of power, but at 3 minutes, you better be trying to get to the runway.
>> Yeah. [clears throat and snorts] >> Yeah. That's the biggest problem with that, man.
>> Yeah. The turbine's a little bit more flexible. Like I said, I haven't worked all the kinks out of it. I've got a couple flights on it, but I need to honestly mess with it some more before I get comfortable with it. Um, but it it will fly. I know that. Uh, I've got that. I've got a an F-18 over here in the corner that I really need to work on.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Uh, that's that's the I believe it's the first Super Hornet Skymaster put out.
>> Wow. Okay. Um, some I bought it used and I just haven't had the time to mess with it. I've got a turbine to put in it, but I haven't had really the time to mess with it. Um, >> that's how it normally always works, man. We get we we we collect all these projects and and uh don't get on them as quickly as we'd like to because we're on something else, >> man. I know it. I completely understand that. Yeah.
>> You know, but hey, at least you got stuff sitting there that if you get bored with something, you can move on to something else, you know.
>> [laughter] >> Well, see, the last few months, this thing right here in the middle of the shop has been the problem.
>> Ah, nice.
>> I bought an old car. Um, >> and the the engine's sitting right there.
>> Oh, nice, man. [laughter] So, you rebuild everything yourself?
>> Uh, yeah. The car is already It was running before I pulled the engine out.
Um, I've done a ton of work to this car.
Uh, cleaned up the bottom of it and repainted the whole underside. I put bucket seats in the front cuz it had a bench seat, reupholstered the rear seat, new carpet, um, insulation, all that good stuff.
It's, like I said, I'm I'm doing the engine right now. The only reason the engine's out of the car is cuz I had an oil leak that I couldn't get to with the engine in the car.
>> What you call a jack of all trades, man.
>> I started out as a mechanic. Uh, I started out working on cars and heavy equipment and stuff like that and kind of progressed into aircraft at a young age.
>> Okay. So this is this is fun, man. This is just fun for me.
>> I got you. I got you. Yeah. Well, that's the thing, man. I mean, if you got the knowhow, it is fun. I love working on stuff myself. That's why most of my stuff on my truck and things like that, I I do it myself. I don't take it to a dealership. Um I I'd rather do it know it's done right and I don't have to check behind somebody else, you know.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. I completely agree. my truck I've got out here now. I've got a a Duramax 2500 and I mean I I do my oil changes, my fuel filter, my brake work, tire rotations. I mean, just because it number one, it's so much cheaper. But >> yeah, >> secondly, it's just because I know it's done right, you know? I mean, and you don't I don't I don't like second guessing or going behind nobody else, you know.
>> I can understand that for sure.
So, so, um, so did you, did you fly the, uh, B-52 while you were there this weekend?
>> I did. I flew the B-52. We got, >> I'd say at least seven or eight flights on it at Jets over Kentucky, which was not as many as I wanted.
>> Yeah.
>> But, uh, I had some transmitter trouble while I was there.
>> And I ended up borrowing a transmitter.
>> Oh, that's scary, too, man.
>> It worked out. And it was fun. It was I had a lot of fun. So, >> that's always good. There are a lot of people there.
>> Uh, last I heard we had a little over 200 pilots.
>> Wow. Dag, >> that's pretty good crowd, man. How How many days was that?
>> Uh, the event, >> man. I believe it starts on it runs from like Sunday to Saturday.
>> Okay. Bag. That's That's a pretty long time. I mean, that's that's >> from all over coming.
>> Yes. Um I don't think I've I've been there at least four times and every time I've seen people from other countries from um all over the United States. Uh yeah, >> it's a big event. Mr. Tim Tuton, thank you, buddy. He's throwing around some more sunshine in here. I appreciate you, man. Um as always, just send some cool weather now and some rain. We'll be good to go.
>> [laughter] >> Make it rain, man. Make it rain.
[clears throat] Um, but yeah, I mean, well, that's that's the thing, man. The more people you can get coming out these events and sporting them, I mean, the bigger it gets. And, you know, Tomas, uh, they've got the big Bomber Field, uh, event coming up in September.
>> And that's going to be a big deal, too, man. Um, he's going to be doing the great big 8 foot, 12 foot pizza, whatever it is. Um, big huge tents, lots of cool stuff to have there. and you know him, man, he's always, you know, giving away stuff and selling stuff. So, >> he'll definitely have it going on. So, it should be a great year. Um especially being that he didn't get to go last year. Um he's g he's gonna turn it out this year. There's no doubt, >> man. That's gonna be awesome. Um I should be there. That's >> Oh, really? Okay, cool. Y that'll be great, man.
>> I need I [clears throat] need I need a job like yours. [laughter] >> Oh, man.
Yeah. I yeah, I changed jobs recently and I don't like it as much, but it does let me spend more time at home.
>> That's great.
>> And I' I've got all kind of leave right now. So, >> yeah. Tim said, "I've seen the big B-52 and got some great pictures from a couple of years ago." Awesome, man.
Yeah, that's a matter of fact, I've got Let me uh put this up here and do this real quick. And um you can uh tell us about this, too. Uh, let me go to this page right here and hit play on this for us.
>> Okay.
>> And you can give us you >> really high altitude.
>> Figured I'd show this to the guys.
>> Yeah. So that's the back of the X-15 obviously with the cutout in the wing >> for the vertical on the X15 >> and believe it's a >> ironically flying it is the easy part.
It's moving it around that's the that's the hard part. But it flies great.
>> Yeah. I mean it's an orange wing. looked like it would all scratch built everything.
>> It's essentially a power glider, man.
You can cut the power off and glide around a bit. It's more maneuverable than you would think.
>> I've scared a few people with the way I fly it sometimes, but >> I built it to have fun.
>> These are correct.
>> Yes, it's eight uh >> eflight 80 mm EDFs. It's pretty special to see a model like the Saturn field this year.
>> So, it I did a couple experiments and settled on the 80 mm size for that airplane.
>> I actually built a 737 from scratch to test mo uh EDFs because it's cheaper to test two than at a time than eight.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Um the the 737 turned out nice enough that I had to go ahead and finish it and I still have it around here too, >> man. That thing looks beautiful in the air. Gosh.
>> Many of you might be familiar with this airplane from the classic movie Doctor Strange Love. The plane was flying in the movie.
>> It makes the pilot look good. It's a good flying airplane.
>> Oh, man. That'd be nice to watch for you.
[laughter] >> It'll carry 10 pounds of candy, too.
We've done that before.
>> Wow.
>> So, >> I saw one of the uh videos where you dropped it out of it.
Yeah, >> that was cool. Kids love that. Anyway, we always do a candy drop in our field, too.
>> So, that was the main reason I built it.
I had a smaller version that was 86 in.
>> There you go.
>> Yeah, that was I did some maintenance on the X-15 and completely forgot to rebalance it. So, that's totally my fault.
>> But, it wasn't damaged that bad and we've got a couple more flights on it since then.
And then we just call that high alpha special X15 right there. It can 3D >> the falling leaf recovery.
>> Yeah, that's pretty cool.
>> The smaller B-52 would carry about 5 lbs of candy off of a paved surface and that was fun, but I went to a flyin one time where they had way too many kids and you know the 5 lbs of candy wasn't enough.
Yeah.
>> So, I told myself I wanted to build an airplane that could carry 10 lbs of candy. And uh yeah, now we can they can pick up candy till they're tired of it.
>> Yeah. We can't have mad kids.
>> You know, you set the bag out on the table and when they don't when when the candy runs out on the ground, you set the bag out on the table and they come get candy out of the bag. But it's just not the same.
>> No, it's not the same. So, >> man, jets can go ahead and fire up.
>> Yeah, [clears throat] it's a it's a fun airplane to fly. Like I said, >> fantastic.
>> It's like you just buttered that one in, man. That was beautiful. Gosh, >> like I said, it makes a pilot look good, man. It's just a good airplane.
>> I got you.
>> It's stable. It's maneuver more maneuverable than you'd think. Like I said, so it's just a good airplane.
>> Well, they always say bigger flies better. So, you know, I mean, >> true. U Yeah. And in this case, I think so. It's It's big and heavy. Although, as big as a wing is, you still get uh like you can still feel a crosswind with it. It'll it'll affect you, but I mean, you it's plenty maneuverable enough. You have enough control authority that it's not a big deal.
>> What does it weigh?
>> 87 pounds.
>> Wow. Tag. [laughter] That's That's I mean Yeah, that's that's a lot of airplane, man.
>> Yeah, it's it's funny to me. Uh I can't believe I built something that flies and weighs more than a sack of concrete. But yeah, >> no kidding. And what are your flight times on that?
>> Uh six minutes.
>> Well, that's that's killer for a plane that size.
>> It's not horrible. Um and I like it. I could I can if I take it up high and just kind of glide a little bit and I can actually fly around at probably 1/3 throttle, but most of the time I fly a little bit faster than that. But 6 minutes is where I have my timer set and at 6 minutes the batteries come out right at storage voltage. So I don't have to do anything. I pull them out, throw them in an ammo can, and go home.
>> That's great, man. That's great. What's How long does it take you to put it together to get it ready to fly?
>> Uh, I can usually do it by myself in less than 20 minutes. Stack. That's pretty good. So, the wings do they how do they attach?
>> Uh they they attach right at the fuselage. Um >> there's a what do you call it? There's a wing tube. It's a 2inch carbon fiber wing tube.
>> Um it's kind of ridiculous the size of that thing, but there's a it's like I don't know 4 foot long. I don't remember the exact length of it. It's about 4 foot long though. Uh it's 2 inch wing tube. It goes all the way through. The wings slide on and then they bolt into the root rib on both sides. The root rib is attached to the fuselage and it's connected by four uh one root rib is connected to the other root rib >> by four carbon fiber tubes. They're high solved into the >> Okay.
>> Quartinch root rib.
>> That's what I was wondering. Yeah, that's so it's pretty solid then.
>> Oh man. So, I actually built two of those uh wing center sections because the first one I didn't like. Um, I had a I don't even remember what it was I didn't like about it, but um, I took that one apart, took it out of the foam and stood on it >> repeatedly. And >> and I weigh Well, at the time I probably weighed 280 and I couldn't break the thing.
>> D.
>> Yeah. I've also stress tested the wing.
I put the airplane upside down on the build table and added weights to both wings. Um, what was it? That plane weighs 87 pounds now. I believe I got up to I don't remember what it was. I don't how much weight it was. It was um It was definitely more than 2 G's, though.
>> Dag.
>> Um, >> that's that's impressive.
>> It's It It's built like a brick.
>> I see that. I mean, it flies like a butterfly, man. It looks amazing.
>> Thank you. It's >> that's incredible. I mean, yeah. Um, so, uh, as far as, you know, we were talking earlier today, you know, a lot of guys, you know, like yourself are getting into turbans more and, you know, you either have the wallet for it or you don't, you know, and, uh, it's one of those things like I've told people that asked me about this hobby, I've said, well, you know, if you're going to spend that kind of money in a jet, you better be able to throw it down on the table and if it goes in, walk away with a smile on your face and say, well, I'll get another one. you know.
>> Yeah.
>> And that's the thing, uh, we were talking about earlier today, the noticing the different companies now that are coming out with bigger EDFs.
Um, you know, I I I've talked to Tomas about this some, too. I I think it's a great thing because um you know you got a lot of nice balsa planes out there now, jets especially and uh if you had you know say some variance in whether you could put in a 120 millimeter or 130 millimeter EDF versus a 85 or 120, you know, turbine, >> you know, it's not going to hit your wallet as bad. Of course, granted, you might not get the flight time, but you got a lot less money. You can fly the bigger birds. I mean, what what are your thoughts on that?
>> I think it'd be a great idea. And >> personally, I flew a bunch of EDFs before I ever bought my first turbine.
>> Yeah.
>> Um with the exception of the throttle response.
>> Uh I think they're a very good learning tool as well for for flying a turbine later on.
>> Yes. Um because they have very similar flight characteristics like I said with the exception of the throttle response.
You're always going to have better throttle response out of a ducted fan.
>> Absolutely. Yeah.
>> But uh Abs yeah it's more uh readily available. It's it's definitely cheaper until you start getting to the really large fans. Then some of those get expensive or like we mentioned earlier the Schubler fan.
>> Very good product but you're going to pay for it.
>> That's right. Well, and and you know, it's kind of like uh we were talking earlier today, you know, we used a Viper as a platform. You know, Viper jet, I don't care if it's a foam jet, a small Viper, a large Viper, uh if it's a turbine, whatever, a Viper platform just flies incredibly well and um it's pretty well behaved. Um, and uh, you know, I think if if somebody would come out with a big Viper Balsa, um, and put a nice, like I said, 120 to 130 EDF in it, >> I think [clears throat] it would be a great selling plane, man. Um, and it would be something that your, you know, your pilot wants to go from a 90 millimeter typical jet up to a 125, 130, whatever they make it in. um into a bigger balsa build that's more like their plane. They put it together, they put the servos in. Um I I I think there'd be a market for it and it would actually be something that more guys I think in today's economy could afford.
Um you know, that that's just my thought process.
>> No, it it makes sense. That's completely logical. I mean, because there's a reason other companies are coming out with, you know, the bigger EDFs as we're seeing in in just in the past couple of months. Um, you know, Motion's come out with a J35 that's 105 millimeter.
They've got another one that's 120 millimeter. Um, and you know, like we were talking earlier today, uh, looking at Remy and what he can build for Tyler Perry, we know the prospects are unlimit, you know, limitless. I mean, the sky's is the limit. Um, and if he can fly those big uh A380s and stuff like that, man, I mean, there's got to be somebody building fans that are, you know, compatible with decent size uh setups, you know, >> when you when you get to uh when you get to that size, I believe the pocketbook starts to become more of a factor. But >> Oh, yeah. [laughter] Yeah. But could you imagine that A380 if it had turbines in it?
>> Right.
>> You see what I'm saying? I mean, again, um, but that's why I say if you could, uh, get a company that would make good fans, >> you know, um, which JP makes great fans.
I've got a JP in my, uh, big Britling, uh, L39, and, uh, if it sound JPs sound amazing. Um, some have said, well, they don't have as much torque, but they've got more high-end, you know, um, as far as speed. Um, again, you know, the the jet that I I put it in uh came with a chainsaw, I think is what it was.
>> And uh JP is a far better I think.
[laughter] Um and matter of fact, I've never even I've never even turned up the uh the chain sun since I took it out. It never even got power put to it. I just went ahead and switched it out with a JP. And uh you know JP makes great products and uh to be sure they could make some fans bigger for these bigger airframes that would push them. Now you know you might have to step up 12 to what 16s something like that. I mean I don't know >> you know >> but you know like you said you're not going to get the flight times but again you don't get the flight times with battery powered planes typically versus gas powered planes either you know.
>> Right. Absolutely.
>> It's a give and take. Um, but if you want the ease of flyability and the not having to know all the electrical stuff, not having to have a waiver, you know, I think it would be a good avenue.
>> The waiver is a big thing, too. That's definitely a big factor. Um, >> a wall outlet's a lot easier to access than diesel fuel and oil.
>> Absolutely.
>> For the turb. Yeah. That's why I say with today's economy and everything's costing more. Um I don't know where about where you are but the gas I think diesel here I looked at it today and it was like 519 in some places. Now there's some other places like Exxon over here will have it 40 cents cheaper than anybody else in town. I don't know why but that's where I buy my diesel from um for my truck. But most places in town the other night they were it was $4.99.
Today it's 519.
>> I passed the Loves earlier today and Loves is I don't think they're even trying to sell diesel because they're always higher than everybody else.
>> Yeah, >> it was 520 something there.
>> Uh yeah, it's it's not >> It's amazing because it's the dirtiest fuel we have. You know what I mean, >> man? I know it. That's a whole another subject, but yes, I'm well aware. I've got a diesel truck as well.
>> Yeah, that's crazy, man. But, you know, I just, like I said, I I I had a good in-depth conversation with Tamas a couple of weeks ago about this and and he was kind of it sounded like it sparked his interest because um like I said, I just uh I know like guys like George, you know, George loves electric.
Um I love electric. Um, and I think if we could get a great company like Legend, who has a great reputation of having great airframes, to look into getting, he's already got a great rapport with JP, you know, possibly look into getting some fans made for these big um airframes that he has, the jets and stuff. Uh, I I think it would be a good thing, man. I really do. Hey, it will be fun, >> especially if he did some military jets because people love those anyway, you know? I mean, so I completely understand. That's kind of where my interest is.
>> Yeah. So, I I don't know, man. Like I said, you always got to look at all the avenues and what people can afford nowadays. I mean, I I personally I can't I can't expend what a Turbine costs, let alone the airframe to put it in cuz if you look at some of these airframes, like what a Sky Master and all these BVM and all this stuff, man, I mean, they're by the time you buy the plane alone and you ain't even got a turbine in the gear and everything, you're already hurting the wallet real bad, you know?
>> Man, I completely understand. Unless you pick it up secondhand, and if you do, you know, you might get a deal, but at the same time, you know, if you buy a new one, you're going to pay up for it.
>> So, you're absolutely right. Personally, for the name brand models that I've had, the turbines anyway, I've never bought one brand new.
>> Yeah, a lot of people have said that.
>> I've I've bought several used ones. Um, >> and I've gotten one of my favorite airplanes. Uh, it's in the other trailer. One of my favorite airplanes is actually a little yellow aircraft F-18.
>> Okay.
>> It's the It was the small one. Yellow made two sizes.
>> Um I have the smaller one. It's got a 70s size turbine in it.
>> All right.
>> Um that was my first turbine, >> which is not ideal, but it worked.
>> Yeah.
>> And I still love flying that thing. Um >> yeah, >> it's a lot of fun. But I got it from a guy that just decided he wasn't going to finish the kit, >> right? And I got it for a very good price. And I mean, because before he told me I could have it for, you know, a steal, u I wasn't even considering an F-18 because I like it's a neat airplane, but it's not my favorite. I'm actually a big F-16 fan.
>> Right. Yeah.
>> But I he gave me such a good deal on it, I had to do it. And it turned out it's a it's a great flying model. I really like it.
>> Um now I've got two F-16s in the attic that I haven't touched. Well, you know, it's funny you said F-16 because a friend of mine, he has a turbine. It's the Skymaster uh and it's the uh Arctic Camo F-16.
>> Okay.
>> And it's absolutely, it's all composite.
It's absolutely gorgeous. Um the biggest to me, because I have the 90mm F-16, >> the biggest scariest thing with an F-16 to me, man, that I have seen characteristic wise, they look great. I love the they're nasty looking. I love them. But it's it's it's the landing one, man, because they want to wing waggle so bad when you set it down if you come in with some speed, you know.
And uh I was watching my friend at the field one day and he was just running his up, you know, doing some taxi test and and he got where he got, you know, heading down the runway and the nose started to come off. So he kind of backed out of it and when he did it started wing waggling, caught the tip of the nose, broke the gear back. Um, broke the door off and he was like, "Ah, dag man." You know, I mean, and that's the biggest thing with an F-16 that I've seen, you know, is that that that the gear are so close together, you know?
>> Yes. It has a really narrow stance. It's that's actually it's an issue with the full scale as well. They have to tip several of them over.
>> Oh, really?
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Okay. There's pictures out there. your F-16 sitting on one main landing gear and the nose and a wing tip.
>> So, it is a thing.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Okay, good to know. All right. So, yeah.
Well, he he it was beautiful, man. And he said, "Well, I'm take it home. I'mma fix it." You know, and he said, "I got to get it back out here and and get used to it again." You know, and uh but that that to me, it was a beautiful turbine and he the cockpit was all detailed with the moving pilot and >> Okay.
>> It's it's a gorgeous jet. I never actually saw him fly it. Um because again, he'll take something like that and set it on a bench and he'll get to it when he can because he's disgusted at this point. You know what I mean? So, and I get that way too. If I dork something, >> I take it home and I put it away and I'm like, "Nope, I ain't gonna mess with it right now." You know, because I'm I'm ticked off with myself, you know?
>> I completely understand. Uh I >> I spent nine years working on that B-52.
A little bit over nine years.
>> Wow. Part of the reason for that was because I would get tired of looking at it and go work on something else.
>> Yeah, >> there was there was several times, matter of fact, I I was telling somebody the other day, I think I built three other aircraft in that time.
>> Um, including the scratchuilt 737.
Uh, yeah, just I get I got tired of looking at it.
>> Wow.
>> I just wanted to show some progress on something so I'd work on something else.
>> Yeah. Well, didn't you uh didn't you say you were getting ready to um start on something just as big?
>> I not quite as big. It's similar. Um it's the same scale. So, it's going to end up being the B-52 is 14 and 1/2t wingspan.
>> Wow.
>> Um the the airplane I want to build right now will be a 10ft wingspan.
>> And it's a uh a KC135, the same scale as the B-52. I've been talking about it over a year now. I've I've done a whole lot of CAD work on it, but I haven't actually cut out any parts yet.
>> Okay.
>> I'm hoping to change that here very soon because I want to again start making some progress on it.
>> So, is that is that a kit or you going to scratch build it?
>> I wish I could find a kit. So, [laughter] >> for the scale I want, I'm going to have to scratch build it because I haven't seen a a 10 foot KC135 or 707. Um there's a there is a company in Europe that makes 707 uh like short kits.
>> Uhhuh.
>> But they don't make this the scale that I want.
>> So I'm going to end up doing it from scratch, which is okay with me. And I'm going to try a few things. There's some uh some different methods I want to attempt. So >> what are you going to power it with?
>> Uh I want to put two 70 size turbines on the inboard pylons.
>> Okay. That's my plan. Um, like I said, the the B-52 has a six minute flight time. I'm hoping to get more flight time.
>> Sure.
>> Um, it's not really a power issue. I've got plenty of power in the B-52, but I'd like to get more flight time, which is why I want to go to the turbines on the >> Yeah.
>> on the 135.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's the thing.
That's why I was saying you're definitely going to get more flight time with the fuel than you will batteries.
Um, I had a friend of mine the other day and he was talking to me again about the What is it they're putting together now?
is lithium ion batteries that they're putting in packs to get better flight times with jets and stuff like that.
>> Oh, I I'm not sure. So, on the transmitter pack or not transmitter, receiver pack, I use lithium ion packs a lot, >> but I've never used one for a for a power system.
>> There's a there's a guy at our club. He builds his own packs and the batteries are small. They're about I don't know probably that long and about I don't know big around as my finger.
>> Okay. And he puts uh anywhere from six to eight together in a pack.
>> Yeah.
>> Man, he's taking a jet that would normally get three, three and a half minutes and he's getting eight, nine minutes out of >> That's pretty good.
>> And you don't have to worry about low voltage with these either and stuff like that. So he's he's building them himself.
>> Okay.
>> So So there's obviously something to it, you know.
>> Yeah, I that's worth looking into.
Absolutely. And uh he's he's built right many for his jets at the club and I've watched them fly. They actually have more power. Um because he said they don't you don't have to deal with C-rating and stuff like that.
>> When he builds them, I mean that that like he's got the FMS Futura and he put one in that and I have the Future and I love it. I can get typically around four minutes out of it. He's getting eight and a half, nine minutes, man. And uh he's cooking. I mean, it's it's screaming, >> okay?
>> And and and he's not coming down with, you know, bulge batteries or hot batteries or anything like that. I mean, and >> there's a theory behind the whole thing of it. And he said, you know, actually they're cheaper than lipos to build and uh put them together and then he shrink wraps them and everything and uh they look great, you know.
>> Okay.
>> So, man, >> something to look into, man. I mean, >> absolutely. I mean, so, um, I think George, when he came to our flyin last fall, I think George met Mike and talked to him about it. Um, and, uh, Mike told him something about he might get him one of the packs or something like that.
But, yeah, they were talking a lot about it and George showed a little interest in it, too. Um, because and I think Wayne that was on here with me a lot, Wayne has uh, I think one of the packs that he flies in one of his planes, too, that Mike made for him. Okay.
>> So, and he said they were a lot cheaper than lipos to build.
>> I use lithium ion packs for receiver packs and for the turbine ECUs >> and they work great for that, but I've never tried one for a power system. Like I said, >> I one of the things I love about them is you don't have to worry about the charge uh condition after you're done.
>> That's what he was saying, too. Yeah.
>> Yeah. They don't form a memory. So, you can charge them. You can fully charge them and let them sit for months if you want to or you can, you know, after it's drained, you can take it out. You don't have to worry about putting it at storage voltage or anything like that.
That that's a huge plus for me.
>> Absolutely. Yeah. And he did talk about all that, too. So, he said they were a lot more efficient. So, and he actually the day he flew the Futura, he said, "Tell me this jet doesn't have more power." And I was sitting there watching. I was like, "Damn." You know?
And he said, "Yeah." He's like, "All right, I'm already at five minutes, man.
I'm going keep he's ripping it, you know what I mean? And normally, >> okay, >> you know, you're kind of slowing down with a lipo, you know what I mean? You don't have the punch you had when you took off. And >> so, yeah, it was pretty impressive, man.
So, you know, >> I say you might want to look into that one.
>> Oh, yeah. That's interesting >> because that might that might help with like the the B52 and stuff like that.
You never know.
>> Oh, man. I can't even imagine having like a 10-minute flight time with that thing.
>> That's what I'm saying. That might [laughter] time for you where you want it to go.
How many packs are you running in that now?
>> So, total there's 11 batteries in the airplane.
>> There's 15 pounds right there.
>> Oh, yeah. At least there's there's eight 6S 5000 milliamp uh lithium polymer packs. One for each motor or each fan.
>> And then there's there's two batteries for the receiver and one for the retracts.
>> Dag, man. [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah, that's that's some good weight right there. Yeah. So, if you could cut that down by say just a third and then get, you know, goodness four more minutes out of it.
>> Yeah, that'd be a totally different airplane.
>> Exactly. Yeah. And have more power, more punch if you wanted it, you know.
>> Absolutely. Yeah.
>> Yeah. I definitely would check into that. So, >> that's pretty interesting.
>> Uhhuh. Yeah. Well, I've seen it firsthand and I know it works and so um there's no question about it. and and he was making them for a few guys, but he said, "I just don't have as much time as I want to do it, you know."
>> Yeah.
>> Because people start asking for stuff and you're trying to get your own. It's another It's one thing to do your own and doing it for other people, you know.
>> Man, I completely understand that.
>> Yeah. It's crazy.
>> I told you I made a an 86 inch B-52 long time ago.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh well, I actually sold kits for a very short time. I think I ended up making like seven kits.
>> Gosh.
>> Uh short short kits for that. And it was a lot of work, >> man.
>> Um I I I'm not sure if anybody ever flew one. I know a couple people put the airframe together. Um I actually had to ship one in New Zealand. A guy in New Zealand bought one. [snorts] >> That's pretty impressive.
>> It was fun. Uh but it's not as much fun as building it for yourself.
>> Yeah, I get that too because it's like well also it's like shipping off a part of yourself. You know what I mean? To a degree, you know?
>> Yeah. Yeah, >> George asked me. He said, "Are they light? Are they lighter as well?" I believe they are, George, if I'm not mistaken. I think he said they were slightly lighter the way he was building them. So, I think you talked to him at our flyin when you came. His name was Mike. Uh, I can't think of his last name now. I could look him up in my phone, but um I think you talked to him because he had a couple of uh airplanes for sale just a ways down from Guy when y'all were here.
Um, he and Guy Caputo, uh, Flying Tiger came to our flying event last fall. We had a great time, man.
>> Nice.
>> We need to get you down here sometime, man, and show us to beat 52, you know.
>> Man, I I need to get it out and fly a few more places. Yeah.
>> I mean, because we've got a nice runway.
I mean, we're pretty wide open field.
Um, we've got about a thousand foot runway, about 100 foot wide, so and it's very well manicured. It's grass, but it's very well manicured. I don't remember the size of the runway at Bomber Field, but it was pretty easy flying off of that. Oh, >> that's good then. Yeah, I don't think it's I It seemed like George said it wasn't quite as long as ours.
>> Yeah, I don't think it's 1,000 feet.
>> Yeah. Yeah, we've got a nice facility. A lot of covered area. We've got about 16, what is it? 16,000 square foot covered area, I think.
>> Oh, wow.
>> Um and lot of uh we got power outlets, lights all the way down the runway with power. Uh we've got uh primitive camping, bathrooms, clubhouse.
>> So, and we've got about about a hundred members. So, um Okay.
>> It's a nice club.
>> It sounds like it. Yeah.
>> See, George said very nice runway for sure. Yeah, it is.
>> I hope he'll come back. He better bring his butt back here. He said he's gonna bring his wife next time he comes. I was like, that'd be great. So, >> okay.
>> So, yeah. Um, we're in North Carolina and I don't know how far that is from you, but you know, >> uh, yeah, it's a bit of a drive. Like I said, we drove Kentucky was, uh, 13 hours.
>> Yeah, Kucky's about 12 hours from here.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah, I've been to Kentucky one time and it seemed like it took us from sun up to sun down to get there, man. So, >> hey, I grew up in Texas. Sometimes it take you two days to drive across that thing.
>> Oh, I'm sure, man. Gosh, [laughter] man.
Yeah, I I text Thomas the other night. I said, ' Man, are you okay out there?
Because, you know, you hear about all that flooding out there. And he said, 'Ye, we're good where we're at. And I was like, well, that's good because I was worried about you. So, it's sad for all those people down there that are getting flooded so bad, >> man. It's uh my parents still living in uh outside of Houston. Yeah, I'm I have to look at every time they get a a hurricane or a good tropical storm and check on them is they're getting up in age. But >> yeah, >> that was one of the good things about going to Bomber Field. I got to hang out with my parents. They got to come see me fly.
>> Oh, that's cool.
>> They don't get to see that too often, but they liked it.
>> Are they gonna come back this year?
>> I don't know. I haven't talked to them about this year yet.
>> Okay. Yeah, >> we'll see. It's It's hot out there for people that are up in age, too, man.
>> You You ain't kidding. [laughter] >> So, there ain't whole lot you can do about that.
>> It's hot out there for me, too.
>> Oh, yeah. I Well, like I said, it it's been hot here for me. That's why I'm sitting in the house tonight because it's nice and cool in here. So, but uh well, look, man, I'm not gonna keep you much longer. Like I said, um I just appreciate you coming on here tonight, hanging out with me. And um like I said, uh enjoyed the video we saw. That plane is absolutely beautiful. And um get us some more uh stuff that you're doing and working on, man, and we'll get you back up here because I'd love to see that next plane you're going to start on.
>> Not a problem, man. I appreciate the invite. I can talk about airplanes or old cars all the time.
>> Hey, I love my old cars, so I wish I still I had a 68 Camaro Sup Sport that I sold and I've kicked myself so many times for. And uh I sold it probably about 25 years ago and it would be worth 10 times what it was then right now cuz it was I showed it. It was in show condition.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> And uh I had a guy come up one day with a trailer and a bag of money and he said, "Hey, I want this car." I said, "Well, I don't want to sell it." He said, "Count that money. You might want to." And I counted the money. I said, "Um, can I help you put it on the trailer?"
>> Yeah. It it it was like uh >> [laughter] >> And now I wish I wish he'd kicked me in the rear end for it because it was absolutely beautiful, man. I miss it so bad. But >> you live and learn.
>> I can understand that.
>> Uh the classic cars have gone through the roof in value, man. I mean, it's crazy.
>> I know it. This is So, this is a 1964 Plymouth Valiant.
>> Mhm.
>> It's not a special car. The Valiants were never that special. It's just a little Mopar A body, >> right? But in good shape, even one of these is more than I would like to pay.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> That's why I started with this one and I'm making it how I want it.
>> Yeah. Well, that's like if you look at a Chevy C10 pickup truck, a 68, 69, 70 model, it'd be a rust bucket, man. And people are asking, especially the short beds.
>> I mean, they're asking stupid prices for them, man. I mean, the tailgate looks like Swiss cheese. The bed looks like you can see the damn axles and it's like are you serious? You want how much for this truck?
>> Yep.
>> I mean, and that's why I say the and and it's all your classic cars. I mean, even when I was in high school, you know, the 79 Trans Ams were the thing back then and now, man, you you find a 79 Trans Am in what I call really clean condition and [clears throat] you gonna pay 30 grand for it easy.
>> Easily. Yep. And I mean, we weren't paying that for them. And they were almost brand new back then, you know?
So, >> man, I know it.
>> So, yeah, it I wish I had the cars that I' I had and I've seen back in my day. I God, I'd have a warehouse full because they'd be worth a gold mine right now.
[laughter] >> I understand.
>> Well, we have airplanes instead. So, I digress, you know.
>> Yeah. You know, it's funny. One of the things I thought about when I bought this car is what airplanes will fit in the trunk so I can take them to the flying field.
>> Hey, there you go, man. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, that's way you get your smaller stuff that'll break down easy and put it in there.
>> Yep. I've test spit a couple things already.
>> I hear you. There you go. Well, go ahead and make the trunk lined out real nice.
You know what I mean? So, >> that's right.
>> Got some in there. I'm gonna let you get back to your family and uh I appreciate you being here and like I said, we'll definitely be in touch and we'll we'll have to get you back on here again, man.
>> Thank you very much, sir. I appreciate it. It's fun.
>> Yes, sir, man. Well, you have a good rest of your evening and uh thank you for so much for being here and we'll talk uh in the chat.
>> Okay, sounds good.
>> Thank you, buddy. See you.
>> Thank you. Bye-bye.
>> Well, guys, there you go. back back in the saddle again. Um, glad uh you guys showed up tonight. Um, again, sorry I took a little time off, but I had to do it, man. Just had to chill for a little bit. And plus, you know, didn't have a whole lot to really get on here with, and I know y'all were tired of hearing about Chipmunk. So, hopefully before too long, I can get the video done uh at my friend's house with the Chipmunk beside the real Chipmunk. and we're going to do a walk around of his plane. He actually said the other day he wants to do a knife edge and smoke system coming down the runway with his plane. And uh I was like, "Hey man, that'd be great. I I'll definitely film it." So um so hopefully we'll get that done soon, but he's not a hot he's not a hot weather person either. So um hopefully we'll get it done as soon as it cools down a little bit and we can get back out there and uh start some filming and things like that for you guys. But um I really appreciate you guys for coming in here tonight and uh being here and appreciate you coming back. Um hopefully everything will stay on track now since I took a little hiatus and a little time off. Um so yeah, so hopefully we'll see you next Tuesday night. Um and we'll see what's going on with you guys and we will talk again. You guys have a safe week.
Hopefully you get some flying in. If you get some of these bad storms, be safe and uh take care. God bless. See you soon. Later.
