Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative Party (UCP) is planning a divisive 6-month referendum campaign on Alberta's separation from Canada, scheduled for October 19th, despite the question failing to meet Clarity Act requirements and facing opposition from the NDP and pro-federalist petitioners who argue the UCP is acting as a separatist party.

Alberta committee urges vote on separationAdded:
We are going to be putting out through 6 months of a divisive process campaign [snorts] that will lead to the October 19th referendum. Clearly, this is not a question that would pass the Clarity Act. So, if Premier is treating this question only as a way of satisfying separatists, she has something else coming because they will not be satisfied with this question either. So, what Premier is doing right now is trying to find her way through a very very fine crack between upsetting separatists and upsetting the rest of Alberta. And her only goal right now is saving her political skin and remaining the leader of the United Conservative Party and the Premier as opposed to doing what's good for our province and for our country. They have changed the law multiple times. They have lowered the threshold for a separatist petition to get through. They have overturned court decisions. They're spending taxpayer dollars to do to support an appeal of a court decision that found that separatism question is unconstitutional and breached the duty to consult with indigenous peoples of this province. The government has done all of that. The UCP has done all of that and today they announced that they are going to be initiating a referendum under their name for the first time in Alberta's history.
This is the official moment where we can say the UCP is a separatist party. No other party in this province has been supporting the idea of having a referendum on separatism. We've all been fully aware of the negative impacts that it has not only on our economy, but also on our neighbors and our friends as we fight and divide over this issue.
But the UCP campaigned in 2023 on many things, but none of them were separatism. And yet here we are 3 years later where the UCP members of this committee just passed a motion recommending that a referendum be called on separatism. And it will be a question that the UCP will design.
