Georgia's primary election day featured high-stakes races for governor and US Senate, with significant voter turnout exceeding 1 million in early voting; the election faced technical challenges in Cobb County, while election officials emphasized security measures including chain of custody protocols and bipartisan oversight to ensure voter trust and integrity.

is left behind.
>> Well, thanks so much for joining us for Good Day Atlanta. Sherry is coming up next.
>> Stay connected to Fox 5 around the clock. We're live streaming throughout the day on our website, fox5atlanta.com.
Fox Local for Good Tuesday morning. Thanks for joining us here at Fox 5 News Live. I'm Jasmine Cornell. Thanks for joining our news conversation this election day. We're streaming here on Fox Local and some of your favorite social media sites like Tik Tok, YouTube, Facebook. If you have any questions during this conversation, feel free to weigh in. Like I mentioned, primary election is officially here.
Georgia voters heading to the polls this morning. They started at 7:00 and they're working to decide who will represent their party in November with the race to replace term limited Governor Brian Kemp's topping the ballot here. Uh we have team coverage all day on this election. Crews spread out at polling locations across the Atlanta area. Let's start with our Mark Titner.
He has what you need to know about the governor's race.
>> Voting been going on here in Gwet County and across the state ever since 7 o'clock this morning. We've seen a pretty good steady flow of folks coming in to cast their ballots at this polling precinct. Of course, the top of the ticket is the race for governor. And you've got both a Democratic race and a Republican one. Let's start with the Republican battle that has turned nasty to say the least. Lieutenant Governor Bert Jones slinging the mud with billionaire businessman Rick Jackson. Uh these guys have been going at it both uh on the airwaves as well as during the debates. Uh in fact $100 million already spent on this one. We are talking about only the primaries and of that $50 million came straight from Jackson's pocket. Uh just about everyone expects this particular race to end up in a runoff. The question though is will all that money that these two spend make sure that they are the ones that will be competing head-to-head or will Secretary of State Brad Raffensburgger and or Attorney General Chris Carr sneak into that runoff. So we asked some of the voters after they had cast their ballots, does negative campaigning work for them when they're trying to decide who to support?
>> Mudslinging is not useful or helpful as far as I'm concerned. Uh, what I want to know is if you have been in office before, how did you vote when you were in office before? And if you haven't been in office before, why should I vote for you? What do you represent? What are your goals?
>> I go look it up. I go look it I go to the media and look them up, read on their thoughts, how long they've been in politics.
>> On the Democratic side, the front runner and former Atlanta mayor Kesha Lance Bottoms. Now, she is hoping to be able to avoid a runoff. So, the big question is, is she going to be able to do it?
And if she's not, who will end up joining her? Will it be uh former uh Lieutenant Governor uh Jeff Duncan? Will it be former state senator Jason Estz?
Or will it be former uh labor commissioner and Dicab CEO Michael Thurman? Obviously, we'll have to wait until all the ballots are cast and counted. And when that happens, Fox 5 will be the place to get your results as quickly as possible. Reporting from Gwynet County, I'm Mark Tikner, Fox 5 News.
>> Again, that is the race to replace term limited governor Georgia, Georgia's governor, Brian Kemp. That is uh this race is a huge race here. Uh a new survey says that Rick Jackson is leading uh the race, the GOP race for governor, followed by uh Bre Bert Jones. Uh Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensburgger is currently speaking. He is another governor candidate uh for GOP. He's speaking right now. Let's take a listen.
>> Just because some people love to talk about stuff like that, but uh I'll probably be at our victory senate celebration that we're having. But with that, that's a quick overview. If anyone has any questions, more than happy to entertain those right now.
>> You're standing right now in the entryway of this building where the FBI came in a few months ago and seized presidential ballots from the 2020 election. Um, are you still confident in the integrity and security of of voting in Georgia? Yeah, I've been here a couple times now and on this visit I just walked through. But but if you look at how transparent it is. In other words, uh where any of the work is going, they've put up, you know, glass partitions around there. And then they also have, you know, it's very visible and very transparent. So anyone that wants to watch that process, but also what they've been doing is making sure those ballots have strict chain of custody and they understand how important that is for just for all two two parts. One is election integrity, but also voter trust. And so I'm really grateful for their, you know, renewed emphasis on chain of custody.
>> And did you come here to send a message or make a statement in any way to the Georgia people or to the White House?
No, I wanted to let uh everyone know that I'm Secretary of State and we have a responsibility to make sure that all the counties follow the process, follow the law. And that's what we want to do is is just check on that. We have our investigators are actually going to be out there in 600 different precincts today before we even get to 7:00 p.m. to make sure that everyone's doing that no matter what where that county is. Uh we have 159 counties. We got a lot of travel to do. Our investigators will be very busy over the course of the day.
How do you ride that line between candidate in one of the most watched and highly anticipated races of the election and maintaining the votes right now maintaining election security?
>> Well, we understand that actually the real work is actually starts right there when you go to check in. It's at the precinct level because then you you you actually pull out your driver's license and they put that, you know, on the electronic, you know, poll pad checkin and then they scan it and then you get your vote card. they go ahead and vote and that's where actually the tabulation starts. So those 2400 plus precincts are doing all the hard work but of course there's hard work here at the county headquarters of all 159 counties but that gets reported up to them and then what they do you really say what they merely do is just report it to us and that's what we report. Now, obviously, we're going to have investigators throughout the state. So, we hear anything, uh, then we got got to go ahead and see what the situation is. But I do know that in Fulton County, every precinct today open on time. That was one of the first questions asked. The next uh question was, "How long are your line times?" And they had it up on their big board because they're tracking it.
They hold their precincts accountable.
But then today, the big work happens at the local precincts who then report it up. So when you go to a local precinct, if you ever been a candidate for local office like I have been, we have our teams going around to the precincts and they're they'll put up right up there on that door there what the results were for whatever that races were at that local precinct. So it builds trust and it builds confidence.
>> What do you say to voters that are a little concerned um and worried about the integrity of their vote given what happened here a couple of months ago, especially in Fort County? Well, because we have a verifiable paper ballot, we can audit any single thing. In fact, in the 2024 race, what's really exciting is that we actually we read the human readable text on every single ballot.
There was five 5.1 5.2 million ballots.
We read the human readable text and there were zero errors with the ballot marking devices. There's one or two that had some smudge marks, but out of, you know, 4.9 million. Now, there were 300,000 handmarked paper ballots, which were the absentee ballots, and they had about 75 to 85, you know, discrepancies, I would call them. But at the end of the day, when you still look at that, look how accurate that was. And then you could verify what was the discrepancy, mismarks and things like that. And that's why you have adjudication panels.
But we can look at any ballot and we have the skid images, we have the physical ballots and then we also have, you know, the the storage cards and we have two memory cards for every machine.
So, we have plenty of backups, false, fail safes, and our investigators out there watching. And I'd actually really encourage our state election board members to get back to what we used to do when I was the chair is my state election board members were out there and they were going to say Ivy Street, the old location, Fulton County, or up in Cobb County, all the different counties, you know, and they were actually a working board. And I encourage every one of our 159 working boards that are out there, they're out there doing the same thing. They're just checking in to make sure because they typically a bipartisan panel and and if there's not trust then good go out there and check it. Trust but verify. Ronald Reagan 101.
>> Can can you resp this this morning but can you respond to some of the attacks that come have come against you for this issue around the uh the bunker? What what tell us more about what that thing is and respond to those attacks?
>> It's just really collecting all that.
But for me it's like water off a duck's back.
So, thank you so much for being here. We got to head off to Cap County. We're running a little late, but uh maybe we'll catch up to you again.
>> Thank you, Secretary.
>> Thank you.
>> Again, that was Secretary of State Brad Raffensburgger speaking there, holding a press conference. He's expected to hold one later today. Um and he was just talking about there uh different uh election issues, election integrity.
Again, he is hoping to secure Governor Brian Kim's seat. An Insider Advantage poll that I mentioned earlier says that uh Rick Jackson Rick Jackson that is is leading the GOP race for governor, then Bert Jones, and then uh Brad Raffensburgger and Chris Carr. Again, this race likely heading to a runoff. Uh let's talk about this right now. This is new information developing this morning.
Some minor issues have been reported uh in this primary election in Cobb County.
So, let's talk about that. And this is from uh Cobb County officials here. Uh so, Cobb County elections and registration currently experiencing issues affecting some election operations at some polling locations.
Officials say backup procedures have been implemented and voting remains ongoing at polling locations across the county. Uh they say voters are encouraged to remain patient as election staff works to address the issue and assist voters as quickly as possible. No polling locations have stopped voting operations, they say, and all eligible voters in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to cast their ballot. Elections officials and technical teams are actively working to resolve the issue and minimize disruptions. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available and we'll be sure to update you as soon as we learn more. We have our Maria Guzman uh traveling across the metro Atlanta area checking on voting issues in this election.
Let's move forward and talk about the GOP uh Senate race. So, the Republican primary for the US Senate is another closely watched race here and it's also likely heading to a runoff uh just like the GOP governor's race. Uh so over the last week, the race for the GOP primary has heated up as we all know. Buddy Carter, Mike Collins, and Derek Douly each trying to secure as many votes as they can. Now, on Monday, Derek Douly appeared alongside Governor Kemp, who's endorsing him. Uh, while Douly has seen an uptick in support, Congressman Mike Collins has been leading the polls here for this race. Um, and so, Republican Congressman Buddy Carter made his pitch to voters as well, and he says the best, he is the best candidate to take down Osaf in November. Uh let's take a listen to all three candidates here for this GOP race for US Senate.
>> I've gone around the state. You know, everybody has their issues that are important to them on their mind. But the one issue that everybody talks about is one of the main issues that drove me to run. Uh and that's the disappointment in what's going on in leadership up in DC that Congress has changed. They're independent. They're they're suburban voters out there. They just want results. And and bipartisan is not a bad word for them. And and when I go up there, Greg, all I do is push legislation. I'm not up there for politics. I'm up there for policy.
>> Got to put our best candidate on the field. We've got to put up our best candidate, one who gives us the best chance of winning so that we can have someone who goes to Washington DC, represents our values in the United States Senate, someone who will help President Trump, someone who would help him deliver on the America first policies.
>> And again, you just heard from the candidates here in the GOP race for US Senate, um, who will run against John Oaf, but this is expected to go to a runoff here. You just heard from uh Buddy Carter, Mike Collins, and Derek Douly. We'll update you, of course, on this race as it continues as voters head to the polls. Uh now, a record-breaking number of ballots have been already cast in these elections in early voting here in the Peach State. Uh Georgian's topping 1 million in early voting. Uh turnout here for this primary election, which is really huge for the state. Uh Fox 5's Britney Edney has more.
>> It was truly a record-breaking and impressive early voting turnout for a primary election with more than a million votes cast. That's about 14% of Georgia's 7.3 million active voters. And now with election day in full swing, all eyes are going to be on today's turnout.
It's primary election day and both sides of the aisle are going to be watching today's voter turnout very closely. So far, more than 584,000 registered Democrats have cast their ballot compared to just over 430,000 Republicans, a difference of about 154,000 votes. You have the high-profile races like governor and US Senate as well as lieutenant governor and secretary of state. And these roles will be critical in certifying and managing the upcoming 2028 presidential cycle.
>> The people elected in 2026 will shape Georgia's political um landscape for the next two decades.
>> But nonpartisan elections that don't tend to get as much attention like the state supreme court race have actually become quite political, especially as a state supreme court could hear important cases like gerrymandering. I'm concerned about those down ballot races more so than the ones at the top. Everybody's got an opinion on those. They will vote on those races. Those will have the highest, you know, the highest numbers, but you want to make sure they go all the way to the bottom. And before you head out the door today, remember to check out your polling location so you head to the right address. Want to make sure that you get to the right spot. And if you are going to vote later on in the evening, maybe after you're leaving work, make sure you are just in line by that 7 pm deadline and you'll be able to cast your vote. So just stay patient and stay in line in Dunwy. Britney Edney, Fox 5 News.
>> And again, Fox 5 Atlanta and Fox Local are your sources for election results.
We'll have all those results of the races posted as they come in. Uh just look for updates streaming live starting at 7:30 tonight. uh and then enable your locations um your notifications that is in the Fox Local mobile app to receive alerts on results, runoff likelihoods, uh comprehensive race analysis and more throughout the night. Another big story here electionwise, uh state senator Greg Dolesal has sued Brad Raffensburgger, the SEC secretary of state. Uh and so we have been talking about this this morning. This to secure immediate injunctive relief for poll watchers. Uh the legal dispute centers on access to the state's primary election data hub.
And um here's what we know. The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief again to force the state to allow poll watchers and state election observers into the election night operations center commonly known as the bunker. And according to Doleazal, Raffensburgger's office communicated to the state election board through its chair that observers will not be allowed in the room. The bunker is the central location where the state receives vote totals, verifies them, and uploads them to the Georgia reporting system. Dozal stated there is a Democrat and a Republican who want access to the room to observe the process. He added, quote, "This just allows additional transparency and additional confidence." end quote. It remains unclear right now if a judge will rule on the emergency injunction before voting ends today. Additionally, the state has not specified the exact security protocols or reasons why the room has been restricted from outside bipartisan board members. Uh now, Raffensburgger's campaign declined to go on camera for an interview, but they did issue a statement criticizing this lawsuit. Uh the the campaign stated quote for a guy who is constantly they say um lecturing everyone about election integrity. You think Senator Doolazal would know that votes are not counted in the Secretary of State's emergency operations center. Uh, Secretary of State Raffensburgger says the real fight to safeguard the ballot box happens at the local level inside county election offices and tabulation centers across Georgia. So, Doleazel acknowledged the location of the vote counting but uh questioned the lack of access. Uh, he said, quote, "The question is why is the secretary not allowing these bipartisan members of the state election board in the room to observe?" uh Doleazal said uh just to be able to see this process, sunshine is always good for democracy. So, we'll see what comes out of this lawsuit here. Again, state senator Greg Doolazol suing Brad Raffensburgger.
Time right now is 11:18. Let's go ahead and take a look at your weather forecast for this election day. And we're not expecting any rain.
>> Yeah, like one stray shower might be possible today. And if you catch that, you are just not lucky, right?
>> 78 in Atlanta, 77 in Covington, 79 in Eaton, 78 in Delton, and 78 over in Rome. But yes, no real weather concerns on this election afternoon. We are going to spend the rest of the voting hours now in the 80s. We'll hit 81 here by the noon hour and then be in the upper 80s for the remainder of the day today. A little more humidity as well. It's going to be sticky at times, we'll say. But as Jasmine alluded to, mostly dry. That changes tomorrow though. Watch this now.
This is your hourby hour extended forecast. You're looking at some cloud cover start tomorrow and then some isolated showers as early as 2 3:00 and then that's going to give way to scattered storms by the time we get to tomorrow evening. This front's going to be pushing in towards northern Georgia and as it does so it's stalling out which means it's not going to move all the way through and that is going to provide daily shower and storm chances through the weekend which of course is Memorial Day weekend. So 88 for today, election day, degree warmer for tomorrow at 89. And then we'll be favoring more of the mid 80s rather than the upper 80s into Memorial Day weekend. And as those temperatures come down slightly, those are when your rain chances go up 40, 50, 60% Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Now you're looking at those going, "Uh-oh, you know, Memorial Day weekend. I got pool plans. I got lake plans. I got plans outside." We want to emphasize two things. One, this is not wash out rain.
This is scattered showers and storms. Uh emphasis on the storms there. The other thing is that because we are getting into summertime, right, you're spending more time outside. A reminder that if you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. So, that's just something to keep in mind. The other unfortunate thing with the rain chances is that it's not a soaking rain, which means I don't anticipate helping out with this situation very much. The drought monitor, most of the area still in extreme drought. So, here's your Fox 5 Storm Team 7-day forecast. Now again, warm above the norm, 5, 7° above the norm, but then daily rain chances begin tomorrow and take us through Memorial Day weekend. But don't go changing any plans. Just have a uh backup in mind, particularly if you're at the pool or the lake, someplace to go if you hear thunder.
>> All right. And it's so important when thunder roars, head indoors. We've been saying that this week uh just with all the rain that we could see.
>> Exactly.
>> But it's not enough, right? It's still not enough.
>> It's not a foot of rain. But thanks, Alex, for uh coming on the stream set today to talk about what people can expect today and for the rest of the week.
>> All right, guys. Let's take a live look outside. Actually wanted to bring up the Mercedes-Benz Stadium because we are less than a month away from the World Cup happening soon. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people uh going to be coming here to the city of Atlanta to celebrate, to mingle, and to of course watch soccer. Um it's such an exciting time for the city and for businesses here in the Atlanta area. And um in just a minute here we are going to bring in Kevin Egan. He is our Atlanta World Cup host committee ambassador and the host of MLS 360 and he's here for our weekly soccer update. Let's go ahead and bring him in. Kevin, thanks so much for joining us.
>> Oh, it's so great to be here as always.
>> Yes, great to be able to interview you today and talk about the World Cup. Um, let's talk about the halftime show.
>> Yeah, big news. Big news.
>> Big news. Breaking. Of course, Shakira is the undisputed queen of world football. There's no doubt about it whatsoever. And it'll be Shakira on stage with BTS, a K-pop uh group that are hugely popular. And Madonna, the legendary Madonna, who has already performed at the halftime of the Super Bowl, as has Shakira in 2020. And I think we're set for something special here. And and the most important message here in all of this is it's inclusion from every part of the world. So the the official World Cup song Shakira with Burner Boy who's from Nigeria. Uh you've got the K-pop uh Asian angle. You've got the American angle with Madonna. The South American angle with Shakira. Chris Martin of Coldplay brings the European angle as he's curating everything. It's just really fun.
>> It is going to be a fun time. And I absolutely love Shakira. She always has some great performances.
>> Downtown Atlanta last summer. I was there.
>> Oh my goodness. walking away with my wife >> and I have not seen her um on stage but a great performer for sure. Okay, so this is some big news for the city of Atlanta. We were voted number one city for sports business. So let's talk about that.
>> Yeah, Sports Business Journal crowning Atlanta as number one, which I'm actually not surprised. This wouldn't have happened 10 years ago, but I think with the with the development of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the business that the stadium brings, the US Soccer Federation now moving to the city of Atlanta, like we've seen the college championship games, college football championship here. We've seen the Club World Cup here last summer, uh we've seen MLB host the All-Star game at Truist Park. But it's not only that, it's the collaboration amongst the city here. The sports council have been absolutely phenomenal. the collaboration with the city, whether it's the the the governor, the mayor, uh, everybody seems to come together for the right reasons here in Atlanta, and I'm I'm very proud of that. And I've lived in Chicago and Miami before, and you don't see that zest for collaboration that we have here in the city of Atlanta. So, Atlanta's crown number one. Taking down New York, LA, like big time sports hogs like Indiana, you know, we we've got such great sports here in this city and the sports business angle, >> which I hosted the global summit of soccer uh last month, and it was held by Sports Business Journal, and you could just tell how impressed everybody was with the city of Atlanta, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and it's just such a fun time to be part of the city right now.
>> It is such a fun time. And uh let's talk about uh what Atlanta United is doing. I know we haven't talked about them in a little minute. I don't think they've had any games recently, but um how is this tied into how are they tied into the World Cup?
>> Yeah, I think Atlanta United are starting to turn a corner in a lot of ways. They produced some good results of late. They drew at the weekend against the rival Orlando down in downtown Orlando, but I think Atlanta being better only serves us better from a World Cup perspective because the people in the city start to get behind their their team again. There there's the the feeling of um enthusiasm toward the game of soccer and the World Cup kicks off. I mean, we're talking 23 days. 23 days.
That's so exciting.
>> Until it's here in Atlanta, Georgia.
>> Now, where are you going to be during the World Cup?
>> I'm going to be TV hosting. I'm also going to be hosting the FIFA Fanfest in Centennial Olympic Park. So, cannot wait to to to see the tens of thousands of people in Centennial Olympic Park. And then a lot of them obviously rock up to the games at the Benz or Centennial Yards, go enjoy everything that has to offer. Uh, it's going to be such an exciting time and my only advice to anybody who's a casual fan or not even a fan at all is dive in and just embrace it. The fun and the flavor and everything the World Cup offers. It's a once in a-lifetime opportunity to see cultures from all over the world come here to our city and it's time to show up and be proud of where we're from and make sure that when they leave here they say Atlanta, Georgia, I want to come back.
>> Absolutely. Um, and do talk about the FIFA Fanfest. What can people expect there? Yeah, great entertainment, great musical acts, some big-time names that I can't reveal yet. And also, you know, an awful lot of folks from Georgia and from the city of Atlanta that have businesses that are have have basically said, "We'll bring our ice cream stand or we're going to bring this uh certain type of food that we we make." And you're going to all these local restaurants around the the FanFest. It's going to have different stages. So, it's going to feel like a real festival there. And you're going to have massive screens with the games on. I'll be hosting it alongside some great guests.
Okay, I want to bring the energy. So, welcome. Please come on down to Centennial Olympic Park.
>> All right, that sounds good. Now, before you go, we do have to talk soccer lingo.
So, what's the lingo for today?
>> Let's see how good you are at this now.
All right, this one you're going to be like, what are you talking about? The haird dryer treatment.
>> Oh, boy. Um, not easy.
>> Maybe something that's needed for when the player's hair gets a little >> Not nowhere close. hair dryer treatment uh was was famous with a man named Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham back in the day when apparently he was just in his face screaming like this close. Uh and they call it the hairdryer treatment. It's a bit of a difficult one. I'll give you one more. Hospital pass.
>> H no I I'm tying this to like injuries or something.
>> Yeah. Like if you give me a terrible pass and you're on my team, you give me a terrible pass and I've got to rush to get there but I get crushed by a tackle and next thing be a stretcher out of the game. That was a hospital test.
>> All right. I was close to that one.
>> Being said by commentators all the time.
So that's why I'm trying to get you up to speed on the >> lingo. Okay. That sounds good. Kevin, thanks so much for joining us to talk about the World Cup. Guys, your time is 11:27. When we return, we'll take a look at some of our top news and talk about the primary election.
Good morning. Welcome to Fox 5 News Live. I'm Jasmine Cornell, your host.
During the streaming hour, uh let's talk the Georgia primary, guys. Uh voters across the Peach State heading to the polls today. They open at 7 a.m. and close at 700 p.m. Uh, and this is a high stakes primary. It will determine the trae trajectory that is of the 2026 midterm election. Several statewide offices up for grabs. We've talked about uh the GOP Senate race, the the governor's race. So, so many uh racists here up for grabs and we'll continue to update you on what's happening with the election as the day goes on. Uh, but let's bring in our Maria Guzman. She's been checking out polling locations for voter issues. Uh we know that Cobb County did reports report some issues with voting uh earlier this morning. So, let's go ahead and bring in Maria Guzman. She has all you need to know.
Hi, Jasmine. Good morning. Yes, I'm currently at Floyd Road Baptist Church.
That's in Mapleton Cup County. And actually, right now, there's no line inside this polling place. I've seen voters just coming in and out. And actually, I'm getting a mix of reactions on how it's going. One voter, uh, he tells me that it was fast. It took about 10 minutes to vote. However, at this location, some machines are not working.
And then I spoke to another work uh, another vote, excuse me, who is frustrated, who says that although it was a fast line that it also took her 10 minutes, there was about four machines that were not working. So, let's go ahead and take a listen to her.
It was a little line. Um, she explained the reason why it's a line was because they only have one machine working. They got five machines in there, at least four machines in there that I counted.
And they're just as frustrated as the customers as we are because it's a couple of pole workers there and they can't work because the machine's not working. This is the second one that I went to. Um, some of them do not have no machines working at all. None. This one happened to have one machine because we in church and God, you know, he takes care of all that. So, that's why it was one machine that my polling place.
>> So, one machine working, other machines are not working.
>> None.
>> How many did you count that are not working?
>> Four.
>> Four that are not working.
>> I want to tell you that's not working.
as a voter who took time >> to come out and vote.
>> Yes. How do you feel about that?
>> Very upset because it's not fair. It's not fair to the public and it's not fair whatever they trying to do, whatever is going on. Um after work, everybody's going to come and it's one machine that's working. So, they going to have the line out the door. It's not even a lot of people today. And they're frustrated. the the workers in there, they're volunteers and they're frustrated.
>> How many volunteers are inside that you could count?
>> Count uh let's see, three, four, five, six, seven. I've seen at least eight.
>> Okay. So, a lot of people that are inside volunteering >> Yes, it's it's several people inside volunteer.
>> And what led you or what motivated you to come out here to vote today >> to make a change? I want to change to make a change. Um, especially the taxes.
Uh, where I'm from, Wilmington, Delaware, we have no taxes. So, I've been here for some years and the taxes just blows me sometimes. I mean, it's 7 to 12% tax. So, that's one of the main things on the ballot is stop the tax change. any other topics that really you know just encourage you for change >> the schools the things they have for the schools um they need to be a change in the schools also >> are you a mother yourself that are concerned for schools >> um yeah I'm a mother but my kids is grown but I have grandkids I have nieces nephews so yes school is number one and two also Now, we did hear back from Cop County Elections, and they did confirm that some polling locations in the county are experiencing issues. However, you're still able to vote, and they don't want people to stop voting just because of those reasons. They also say that they do have backups in place at each location. And you are still able to vote all the way this afternoon until 700 p.m. Jasmine All right, Maria, thanks so much for joining us live to talk about this.
We'll check in with you a little bit later today uh to see what else is um happening out there at the polling locations. Thanks, Maria. Uh moving forward now, President Trump uh visited the White House ballroom construction site. Uh he's been talking about this a lot and he spoke to reporters and visited the site. Let's hear what he had to say this morning.
uh all sorts of research facilities, also meeting rooms and rooms that go hand in hand for the military using the ballroom and the ballroom is really a shield and protecting all of the things that are built here. Uh this goes, as you see, it's already up to the ground.
Uh this goes down very deep. You get a better view right over here. This is down because we've already done these floors, but these are already down two floors.
that it's down about six stories deep.
That's big stuff. Normally when you build a ballroom, you build it flat. You just build a ballroom. It would have been built. The complexity of this and again it's all knit. It's all knit together between the drone proofing, the uh missile proofing. We have uh and the drone capacity upstairs. We can have all sorts of military up whether I I hate to use the word snipers, but we have great sniper capacity. is built for our snipers, not the enemy snipers, our snipers. And because of the height, we get a a very clear view of everything all over Washington. Yeah, >> Mr. President, you mentioned that this is pay for uh out of pocket. But why is Congress in it?
>> Well, they're not. Congress is approving Yeah. Congress is approving money for security. Uh it may go some of it may go here for additional security. I don't know. But Congress is approving money.
But this building, I mean, I f I put up the money to build this building along with a lot of great patriots. People have put up a lot of money to build the building. And we have a building that is going to be I think it's going to be potentially the most beautiful building in all of Washington. And with that is great military capacity. We're building it in conjunction with the United States military and the secretary.
do that.
>> Well, they have a budget in Secret Service and the military to do some of the work that you see right here. So, the answer is I think they want to enhance what you see. Uh it's it's very powerful. You see what's happening. It's very powerful concrete. It's 9,000 lb concrete. That if you know anything about contract, it's very very strong.
That's very strong concrete. But, uh they probably want to enhance the area.
they they're going to spend money. Uh this is a very sacred piece of land.
This is the White House and they want to do things. But uh all of everything that you see and the money that's being put up to build the ballroom and again the ballroom, it's necessary for the ballroom to be built with what you see over here. It's all knit in the air conditioning, the heating, the drone capacity, the shield. You know, the ballroom becomes a shield for everything that you see right here. Without that, they couldn't have this. They couldn't build the lower floors. Without that shield over the top of it, it's a shield that will totally protect what's downstairs. They have a lot of things going on downstairs. And some of it you see, this goes down six stories. You see three stories because it's already been built. Uh this will be very shortly.
This will be uh in the form of this. The roof goes along these lines. Basically, it goes outside. You see where the the wood is? You're going outside of that line and then it goes straight up. And it's all protection and everything's together. You can't build one without the other. And what we have is we have the safest building ever built in my opinion. uh you can have and and you know the other thing is when we're right on budget, we're right on plan. Uh the only budget change would be that we doubled the size at the request of the military. We doubled the size, but we're right on budget, right on plan. And uh originally we're going to build a much smaller room and it wouldn't have done the job. It just wouldn't have done the job. You have too many events. Like if we have President Xi coming here, we have no place to put them. We had the king and the queen the other day and we had a thousand people wanted and we had a we ended up having a hundred people sitting in a very small ballroom. So they've been after this for a long time.
But maybe more important is the safety element. This is a shield. It protects everything that's inside everything that's on top. And you know obviously the White House was built in 1792.
Uh yeah, it's awfully hard to it's awfully hard to do that kind of a capacity that we've done here. So this will give future presidents. But you have to understand when this is finished, my term ends shortly after that. This is really for other presidents. This is not for me. This is my gift to the United States of America.
I'm going to be able to use it very little because when it's finished, we're talking about six or seven months. But it will be used for hopefully hundreds of years for other presidents. And there will never be anything like this built again. There'll never be a rule built like with the safety. As an example, uh if we had the White House correspondent s here would have been no problem.
Sir, >> you said that this will be when it opens.
Have you around that?
>> I have this. I have I better not tell you about that, Dan. But yeah, we have everybody wants to be here for the first event. We're talking about heads of nation. So, we have some very special places that it could happen for, >> you know, we have if we had literally if the king and queen were, you know, we had this finished, we would have had a a event that would have been 10 times. I mean, we literally were in a little room in the White House. president. Now, now we're not even talking about safety.
Presidents have been asking for this for literally from the time the White House has been built, but on record for 150 years, they've said, "What about a big room?" And you all know, you probably attended, they have some where they use tents. If it rains, it's a disaster.
>> This is going to be a future president.
We have to have a safe country. We have to have a great country. We have to make sure that Iran doesn't get a nuclear weapon. All of the things that you see me fighting for so hard. And it's always tough. You know, we're negotiating with Iran and then you have the Democrats, I call them the Democrats, putting in a bill that Trump should immediately stop.
You know how it is to negotiate with a country where you're beating them badly.
They come to the table, they're begging to make a deal because they're begging to make a deal. I hope we don't have to do the war, but we may have to give him another big hit. We may have to give him another big hit. I'm not sure yet. Uh you'll know very soon. But how do you feel when you're negotiating? You're winning every point and they say, "But in Washington, they want to stop you from negotiating. They want to stop you." And it's only political. It's the Democrats. They're dumb. It's a new name. It's a very accurate name. So, I'm in the middle of a negotiation. And I'm saying you cannot have a nuclear weapon.
And it comes over the wire that the Democrats want to stop Trump from further negotiations. They want to stop Trump from, if he has to, giving them another slap. They want to have a nuclear weapon to blow up the Middle East and to blow up, frankly, the world.
It's not going to happen. Mr. >> Nice to see you, by the way.
>> All right. And again, there you are listening to uh President Donald Trump there providing a firstirhand look at that massive construction site of his soon to be $400 million White House ballroom. He called that he called it his gift to the US to this country.
We'll continue to follow that uh story as it develops. Uh let's talk about the war in the Middle East. President Trump says he has called off an attack on Iran that was scheduled for today. He says the decision follows a request from the Middle East allies to allow more time for an agreement to end the war. The president is expected to meet in the situation room at the White House later today with his national security team to discuss what comes next in Iran following the sudden change of course here in this war. Iranian state television broadcasting a warning themselves from the head of Iran's Joint Military Command, saying forces were prepared even after President Trump announced his latest move. The president said yesterday the attack was planned for today and all of this played out on social media. So, let's talk about that. On Sunday, the president wrote, quote, "For Iran, the clock is ticking and they better get moving fast or there won't be anything left of them." Then yesterday the reversal he says quote we will not be doing the scheduled attack of Iran tomorrow which is today. Uh Trump says quote I was asked by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and some others if we could put it off for two or three days, a short period of time because they think that they are getting very close to making a deal. And that deal, he says, will have to cover Iran's nuclear program, something Iran has refused to abandon. And the president is promising what he calls a full large-scale assault if a deal is not reached. And we'll continue to follow this conflict in the Middle East and bring you updates as it unfolds. Uh let's talk about President Trump's approval rating. So a recent poll shows uh that his approval rating has sunk to a secondterm low following the war with Iran and rising gas prices.
So, a poll published yesterday from the New York Times and Sienna University says Trump's average uh the president's average approval rating is currently at a term low 38% of 38% there. And while his disapproval rating sits at a term high of 60%, nearly twothirds of pollers overall disagree with his decision to go to war with Iran.
The poll also found 64% of people think it was the wrong decision while 30% say it was right. Uh Trump, President Trump was rated the worst on the topic of cost of living with 69% of pollers unhappy with his handling of it. And 44% of pollers say the president's policies negatively impacted them personally, up to 36% from the fall. Up 36% from the fall. Meanwhile, the president's highest approval rating was with how he handled immigration issues, holding a 41% overall approval rating. And the New York Times says the president's approval ratings are key election predictors.
The former speaker of the house voices support for her potential replacement ahead of her retirement from Congress.
We're talking about Nancy Pelosi here as she endorsed politician Connie Chan as her successor for the representative of California's 11th congressional district. Uh she announced this yesterday. Pelosi announced the endorsement beside Chan in a video message saying uh quote Chan understands San Francisco. Uh Chan said she is honored by Pelos's endorsement in a statement and she has served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors since 2021 and has chaired the budget committee. So Pelosi is said to retire from Congress in January and Chan is one of nearly a dozen candidates running for her seat. So we'll see what happens there in this race. A big story out of San Diego. Authorities in California are investigating a deadly shooting at a mosque. Three victims are dead after two teenage shooters uh targeted the largest mosque in San Diego County. And according to police, both shooters, 17 and 19 years old, took their own lives after opening fire outside the Islamic Center of San Diego. Police say one of the victims prevented the tragedy uh from being much worse than what it was.
And in that same building, a school that serves kids from preK to third grade went under lockdown. So, a scary situation there for those kids and the officers all involved. Parents reunited with their kids yesterday afternoon. Uh but police say they were first alerted when they were contacted by one of the suspects mothers. So, officials say uh one of the suspect's mother reached out to them and said that she believed her son was suicidal. So, they held a press conference yesterday addressing this. Let's take a listen.
>> I have some updated information that I want to make sure everybody has.
At about 9:42 this morning, we received a call of a runaway juvenile.
After speaking with the mom, mom began to piece together bits and pieces of information over an extended period of time.
The information that she was gathering and conveying to us began to elevate the threat level that we were perceiving with this information.
She believed her son was suicidal.
and she began to share information that sever several of her weapons were missing.
Her vehicle was missing in addition to her son.
She also said that she was her son was with a companion and that they were dressed in camo and that is not consistent with what we would typically see from somebody that is suicidal.
That began to trigger a larger threat assessment picture.
Our threat management unit began to take the tips and leads that we had and utilize the technology we have available to us. Our license plate readers was at the top of that list.
We began to have uh we we noted that there were hits with the vehicle down in Fashion Valley.
We dispatched officers into the area of the mall as a possible uh location that was a threat.
We also gathered information that one of the individuals was associated in some form or fashion with Madison High School.
We alerted school school police department and we dispatched officers into the area of Madison High School.
While we were gathering this information and we were trying to zero in on where these individuals were at, we received the call at approximately 11:43 that there was an active shooter at the Islamic Center.
officers were in the area. So, >> and um so time is 11:50 now.
>> And uh again, you were just listening in on a press conference uh from officials there in San Diego County on this mosque attack. Again, 17 and 19 years old.
Those are the suspects. and they allegedly reportedly shot themselves after u opening fire uh on this mosque and then killing three people. Um again, the officials there saying that um the mother of one of the suspects reached out to them and told them that their son uh was suicidal there. But police saying uh they believe there is a little bit more to that and that he really didn't show signs of a suicidal person. Uh but we'll continue to follow the story out of San Diego County. Time is 11:51.
We'll be right back with more national headlines.
Welcome back to Fox 5 News Live. I'm Jasmine Cornell. Let's talk about this big story here involving Luigi Manion.
So, a major decision from the judge yesterday on what evidence prosecutors will be allowed to show the jury during the trial and what's off limits. So, a key ruling in the New York murder trial of Luigi Manioni, if you don't remember, he's accused of shooting and killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a New York City sidewalk. So, the judge yesterday blocking evidence found in a backpack when Manion was initially arrested at a Pennsylvania McDonald's.
That includes a gun magazine with bullets, cell phone, passport wallet, and a USB drive, but allowed in the evidence that was discovered later at the police station. The decision is a bigger victory for the prosecution here who will be able to show jurors the 3D printed gun found in Mangion's backpack as well as a notebook that helps shed light on a potential motive with one excerpt reading quote the target is insurance. It checks every box end quote. The judge also ruled that Manioni uh showing police a fake ID and giving a fake name will be allowed in, but his own explanations for why he presented them will not. Uh so opening statements in Manion's state murder trial are scheduled to get underway in November.
He faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted. And we will follow this story. is such a huge story here uh involving this man who was accused of killing the United Healthcare CEO.
Let's talk about Disney. Now, Disney is being sued over technology. Uh so, this entertainment giant being sued for allegedly violating privacy and consumer protection laws. And so, Disney is facing this lawsuit over its use of facial recognition technology at its theme parks. So Disney started uh using this technology at Disneyland in California Adventure in April to verify tickets at park entrances. Company officials say it makes entering parks easier and helps prevent fraud. Uh but we'll continue to follow the story and what comes out of this lawsuit here involving Disney again being sued for using uh facial recognition technology.
Time right now is 11:56. Thanks so much for joining us here at Fox 5 News Live.
Our news continues right at noon.
