Google seeks EPA approval to release infected mosquitoes in California and FloridaAñadido:
Meanwhile, Google is now asking federal regulators for permission to release 32 million infected mosquitoes in California and Florida. So, this is how they say it works. It's part of the company's little-known debug initiative.
The project aims to reduce the population of disease-carrying mosquitoes by infecting males with Wolbachia.
Uh that's when the infected males mate, the eggs won't hatch since only female mosquitoes bite humans. The release is not believed to increase the number of biting mosquitoes. Mosquito control officials in the Florida Keys says similar strategies have worked in the past and helped reduce dependence on pesticides. Right now, the plan still needs the go-ahead from the EPA.
