The creators successfully bridge the gap between biological theory and practical husbandry, turning routine farm life into a sophisticated study of animal physiology. It proves that successful farming is less about luck and more about the precise management of metabolic and hormonal cycles.

We've Got a New Addition to the Farm! ๐Added:
You'll be okay.
You'll be okay. So, has she been squatting?
Go away.
Guess who is joining the farm. [music] Yeah, see.
Willow's got it figured out. Come on, Willow.
We were young and we were free [music] and [singing] running.
Never bothered about what could be [music] coming.
Every day we danced [singing] and life was smiling. [music] We were young and drunk in love.
>> [music] [music] >> Okay, today is an exciting day because we are going to milk Rose for Well, it's not the first time, but it's been about a week since she's kidded. I've been milking her out, but now she's starting to look really nice. So, here's what she looks like. Not too bad, huh?
Let's scoot her over.
That is nice. And I'm so excited to see this because she's out of Violet. We love our Violet. You always wonder what kind of udder are we going to get, but Pokey and Violet really produce a nice little doe with a nice little tight socked on udder.
So, has she been squatting?
Surprisingly, she hasn't. I've gotten really lucky, but walking her down the walkway, she has been difficult. And it's weird because I trained her as a kid, took her to a bunch of shows. She won a junior grand champion. So, she has been led by the collar quite a bit. I don't know. She's not having it after kidding, and I don't know if she's just weird hormone stuff or whatever, but we're working with her every day to get her back to kind of normal where she can walk with us and get used to the little routine here. But, I'm glad she didn't turn into a squatter like I worried about. And as much as I lament about having two bucklings, it is nice in the fact that they keep this milk going.
They keep her udders stimulated, that's for sure. So, the plan is later this week to do a full clip on her, get all this hair off, shave the udder, and see what she really looks like. Get some nice pictures of her. So, we'll be doing that. And yeah, I've got to commend her for at least not being a squatter.
Good job, Rose.
Guys, look how big these kids have already grown. They're so They're massive.
Okay, so we've decided on the names for these two.
Um we had a really good suggestion, which we thought went really well with Rose, which is Bud. Oop.
Well, you have Bud.
I have Thorn.
I have Thorn, who is more naughty, more wild. And I have Bud.
He's sweet and calm.
>> [laughter] >> He's very sweet. This one is, you know, he's trouble from the start. But he sure is cute. So, they're both going to go actually unregistered because they do look really nice. I'm actually really impressed with this line breeding and how I know. And how long and level they are.
They're really nice. Like, look at that.
I mean, I'm holding him, but he looks really nice. But >> Very. Look at that.
>> I don't really have any people that are really interested in bucks, especially out of a first freshener. So, I think it's best to hold off this year and just have them go as pets. And if Rose has bucks in the future then maybe we'll sell them either, but okay, they really want to go to mom. Look how bucky he is.
Oh my goodness.
>> [snorts] >> Is he an annoying brother?
Yeah, that's pretty annoying.
Did you lose a piece down there?
Our dogs expend a lot of energy every day. And when it comes to feeding them, we always try to give them the best nutrition possible. But sometimes that means you also need something that works into your busy lifestyle. And that's where Sundays for Dogs comes in. So what Sundays for Dogs does is they take human grade research backed ingredients, and then they gently air dry them at low temperatures to kill germs yet lock in nutrients. And I love their ingredient list because it's pretty much everything that I myself would buy at the store.
Almost. I don't know if I'm going to be eating chicken liver, but pretty close.
There's plenty of protein in them providing essential vitamins and amino acids. Then you've got things like pumpkin and ginger root that supports their digestion, flax seed for fiber and heart health, fish oil for joint support, and then different herbs and fruits and vegetables. All things that are going to help your dog be as healthy as and the best part is instead of it being processed at high heat, Sundays for Dogs is slowly air dried, which preserves the maximum nutrition. And of course the dogs love it. Start serving them 100% meat and superfoods they deserve. Get 50% off your first order at Sundaysfordogs.com/freedom50 or just use my code freedom50 at checkout. Our dogs love it, especially Salem, and I know you guys will too.
Only speak if you like it.
Oh, good girl. Hi guys, welcome to the weekly feed them and peep update. In general, the feeder has been incredibly popular with the local birds ever since our first visitor, a male finch named Bert, who literally spent all day eating that first day. We've had near constant traffic all day, every day, so long as the feeder is full. And then there's Jerry, the white-winged dove, a frequent customer who domineers the space a little bit, but he's learning to share.
And while this bird feeder has been fun and all, it hasn't been without its [music] challenges. About a a week ago, we got our first unwanted visitor, a rat. And this guy did not care, no matter how much I yelled at him.
Get out of here! [groaning] Go away!
>> [groaning] >> He said, "I DON'T CARE."
>> [snorts] >> GO!
AND SO NOW I'M RESEARCHING SOME ways to keep the rats away because as cute as they are, they eat a lot and risk chewing through wires and other plastic parts. But, so far everything's been a success more than anything, and you can expect more to come.
Okay, go. Good job. Oh, she looks so good.
>> look good.
>> [laughter] >> This is the only way we can get their feet done when they're kids cuz they do not like their feet trimmed, their legs trimmed.
Just like puppies, we have to use a sling.
Okay. You want to grab her and then I'll I'll lift those up. Okay, that'll go.
Okay, I'll put her down. I want to see her walk.
Ta-da!
You look so good.
Walk around.
Walk around. Walk around.
There you go.
>> [laughter] >> That looks like a little deer. Oh, she does with the spots.
Well, we're shaving the kids today. And by that, I mean Kevin is shaving the kids today cuz he's the resident goat shaver around here. But, not taking them to the show because A, I hate showing juniors and B, it's really hot at this local show and the juniors are shown later in the day and we're not going to deal with that. So, we're actually just clipping them so I can take some nice pictures of them because once we hit the summer, it gets really hot. We don't want to be outside a lot. So, we're going to take some nice pictures, but before that we got to get everybody shaved. Okay, next one up.
>> She's got a a weird color on her back, a line.
Oh, that like lighter line, that dorsal stripe?
>> That's weird. It's funny.
Okay, who's next? They've already had their body shaved. We just need you in here for your feet.
>> I'll come in. You know, the thing about Ducky is she's so long. She is long. She is a long doe.
It'll be interesting to see, huh?
>> She's She's slender. And she's wide.
>> She's really slender.
She does have some moon spots. Look at that.
>> What? You have two little dots on your side.
>> Trying to hide them from us?
Look at that. Two little dots. You okay?
You'll be okay.
She was the best one, I think.
Yes, you were.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> For Nessie, those wattles were fun.
>> She's got a long, skinny neck.
Yeah. Well, it actually ended up working out pretty good. They all three did really well. Makes me want to now maybe take him to the show, but no. No, no, no. It's too hot. We don't want to suffer through the heat at the end of the day. So, we're not going to show them, but we got some really nice pictures. So, we did Nessie here. She's the AI doling out of Twyla and Count N Orders. Then we did Ophelia here who is out of Violet and Romeo. And then finally we did Ducky, our little experiment line, I guess you could call it. Now with Ducky we're about four generations from Tilly. And I was really impressed with how nice she looked at me. She's really long. She's decently wide. So, it all comes down to that udder. Is her udder going to look good enough? Just got to raise her up, get her bred, see how that udder looks.
Oh, but I forgot to mention we have a new little doling arriving to the farm tonight all the way from New York. So, waiting. I'm excited. It won't be till late tonight, so I'm I don't know if I'll get any footage of it. It might have to be till tomorrow, but I want to show her in this video, so I'm so excited. She's coming soon.
Guys, look at all of this hay. Kevin is so excited because we are set now till the end of time. That's a lot of bales.
That's a lot of bales. You should have built a bigger storage so we could have done more more than that.
We've got some over here as well. Really what needs to happen is these ladies after show season need to be put on a diet. Yeah. Especially that one right there. Oh, man. Bella.
Cuz we've got a lot of really nice, beautiful grass and spoiled goats. They don't need it. Yeah, the pasture is really nice right now. The There's lots of weeds and stems in there. They really actually like it. So, we're going to force them to eat it because if you just give them alfalfa, they're going to choose that over everything. Yeah. So, after show season we're going to get everybody here on a diet so then that way they can all be bred successfully because weight plays a big role in how easily they get bred and how many kids they have. We'll give them a little alfalfa, you know, a few bales, but then once they finish those, they're still hungry, then they go eat the pasture.
Yeah. So, when you're breeding, you actually want them to be under-conditioned, so that right before breeding, you can flush them. The flushing doesn't really work if they're already fat. You got to get them nice and lean first. So, that's what we're going to work on this summer, get them nice and lean, kind of let them eat the pasture finally, and then we'll move them in the fall to breeding season, and then we can get back with the alfalfa.
She's going to try.
Goats. They don't really need it, but we're trying to keep everybody's milk up for the show, and so here comes more alfalfa.
Come here. Don't look in the camera.
Come here.
Hi. Hey.
Hello. You want a bottle, probably.
That's a finger, not a bottle. This is a cold bottle. That's a finger.
>> give you cold bottles? Let's see. I don't know.
All right, let's set you up. Let's go this way.
Come here. Come here. Come here.
Got to make you look really nice.
You're not doing a very good job.
Come over here. Come over here.
Stay.
She's nice, I promise you. She's nice and wide, too. Look at that.
>> Oh, look at that. Guess who is joining the farm.
>> [laughter] >> Now, we got a new doeling all the way from New York City. Not New York City, but New York. Tyler Ramirez from Casa Ram, and yeah, I think I'm just going to always buy from him since it always seems to work out. The The kids turn into these beautiful adults that he always is jealous of and wants to buy my so Too bad. Too bad, Tyler. I'm just teasing. He doesn't He doesn't ask to buy a doe's back. I'm just saying that to tease him.
Um but, I've been so so happy with Violet, and especially Violet's consistency, like what her offspring ends up looking like, that I was like, "I see another doe in your herd that I'd really really like to get a kid out of."
And that was Rosรฉ. She's a really beautiful, correct >> [laughter] >> doe. And she was bred Rosรฉ was bred with one of his bucks, Pokey Loap. I know. A different kind of Pokey. Oh, thank you.
Mhm. Thank you. I love those sneezes.
So, now we have this doe here, and her official name is Casa Ram PL Diamond Daze. Got that. Got that down.
Okay. So, I was thinking, should we just go with Daisy? I think that I think that'd be good. Of course, also, Tyler doesn't tell me that her line can be like her sire is a bit of a pill. Oh.
And that she could be that way. Of course, Tyler, you don't even tell me until she gets here, but we'll deal with it.
>> She's pretty enough. It's worth it. So, what we're going to do is we're not going to take her to this weekend show.
We don't want to take any juniors, but when we get back, Kevin here is going to shave her. We're going to get some really nice pictures of her, and then I'll do a whole feature on my website about her. Okay. But, um yeah, she's a sweetie. I don't know what you're talking about, Tyler. She's I think she's going to be Oh, he must have held her on his lap, cuz look, she's just like a lap baby, like We're going to make her sweet. We're going to force her to be sweet. So, let me know if you think the name Daisy is good, if you guys have another name. I'm thinking Daisy is the closest one to the registered name, and we haven't really had a Daisy. We've had kids that have been named Daisy, but we haven't had an adult that we've raised up, so >> Yeah.
figure that's a good name. One thing Tyler was telling me is that she's going to be very different than Violet.
>> Okay. So, she's going to be a little bit more like East Coast on East Coast genetics. So, a little bit different.
Violet's a bit of like East Coast West Coast mix of genetics and so, it'll be interesting to watch and see how she does.
It's so hard bringing a new kid to the herd because while the adults all have their herd order, the kids also have an order.
And they're like they don't like her, you know.
It's going to take some time for sure.
Watch her, she's going to She's like been staying far away from everybody.
Nessie is the boss.
>> Nessie's like, "Get the heck out of here. Who are you?" Nessie's the boss, then >> Nessie. then probably >> [laughter] >> Ducky. They all chase her away. Oh.
>> She has a lot of grass to eat. She's getting milk from us and then I'm sure she sneaks in some hay. Like, "Go hurry.
Go try. Go get some."
When nobody's looking. Let's see if River's nice to her.
Do you sneak in some hay here and there?
A little bit. All right. Good job.
Oh boy, guys, does my family hate to see me come in when I am feeling the need to cook healthy. They all dubbed it mom's weird dinner [music] and I don't care cuz it's really good and healthy and full of fiber and vegetables and so, I'm going to show you how I made it. So, I'm starting with a traditional French I'm going to totally mispronounce this Tarte Tatin. It's basically a vegetable tart. So, we'll start with chopping up a bunch of mostly root vegetables. That's what works best for this. So, we've got carrots, leeks, a little more carrots, some onion, and then some beets. All this together just It's the best flavor, so you got to trust me on this. So, first we'll sort of sear, sautรฉ everything, cook it down a little bit in a pan. And I just added salt and pepper, although you are supposed to add herbs de Provence, but I forgot to add that.
So, yeah, it would have been better.
Okay, next we'll take some parchment paper, crumple it up, stick it in the pan, and we're going to put a bunch of Parmesan cheese on top of that, followed by some olive oil, balsamic vinegar glaze. Okay, so now we'll put the vegetables on top, and then we'll top [music] with just some store-bought puff pastry. When it's all done, we'll bring it out, flip it over, peel off the parchment paper, and oh my gosh, this is so good. It looks burnt, but it's not burnt because it's just the beets. The beets are giving it that dark color. But my goodness, this is so so good. Now, I topped it with a little bit of honey and a little bit of the herbs, but it's pretty good as is. Next, we need a big old kale salad. And this is actually like a warm lemony kale salad. I love it. So we'll start by chopping up a bunch of kale, which always seems to take forever cuz I like to take the stems out for this. But once we do that, we'll add some salt to the kale, and we're going to massage it and get it kind of broken down a little bit. Now, what goes so good in this kale salad, this is what makes it, is we put some olive oil in a pan, we're going to sautรฉ some garlic, and then we're going to dump in some golden raisins. The golden raisins, they taste different than regular raisins. They're a little bit more mild, but we'll cook that in the garlic, and they just plump up, absorb that garlic oil, and are such a good sweet addition to the salad. But at the end, we're going to add a little bit of lemon juice as well. So we'll take that, add that into the salad. Now, the recipe usually calls for panko breadcrumbs, but I like to level it up a little bit and take some croutons, blend them up in the blender, and then use that on the salad.
It just adds a little bit more flavor.
So we'll top that on the salad, toss it, and there you go. It's so good. It has this like garlic lemon oil flavor. It's salty, but then it's also sweet from the raisins. It's really good. And finally, we're going to add a little bit of protein to my very stained silicone lined pan. So we'll lay out some fish, put some seasonings on it, and we're going to top that as well with croutons.
And you know, guys, this meal would not be complete without Danelle's bean brownies, cuz I can't make I can't make regular brownies. I got to make bean brownies just to top off this nice healthy meal. So, today I'm using a boxed mix and I'm adding an extra egg and a can of beans. They didn't turn out exactly like my homemade ones, so I don't know if I'd recommend this, but I'm just showing you because it is possible. They do taste quite different, but it is possible. And there you have it. That's our meal. I mean, I love stuff like this because you have the nice healthy fish, you have kale salad, and the tarte tatin with all the root vegetables is actually really delicious with that puff pastry. And finally, of course, the bean brownies for dessert, which are nice and fudgy, but they can be a little bit rubbery. So, I think the no flour version is probably the best.
So, let me know if you would eat all that or if you'd be like my family and complain about how weird it is.
Although, after they ate it, they said it was really delicious, so either they're trying to just not hurt my feelings or it really was amazing like I thought.
All right, it's irrigation today and it's nice because it's during the day.
The last like six times have been in the middle of the night. We open the ports and the lake water floods into our backyard watering everything. Well, I think they might get stuck on that side.
These ladies are not very smart, no matter how many times we've done it.
They haven't quite figured out that if they stay over there, they're going to get stuck. Ooh, Willow's got it figured out. Come on, Willow.
You've been here the longest, so you know.
So, it's untreated water that gets flooded into our backyard. We've done this for years and years. This is better for Arizona because if we use sprinklers, we would lose a lot of the water to evaporation since we're so dry. So, this is the best way to like deeply water and not have to water as frequently. For our property, we're allowed as much as 3 hours, but we only take one. That's all we really need. So, let's do a time lapse and see how quickly this fills up.
>> All right, thanks [music] for joining us in today's video. We have a busy week because we have the show coming up. This is a big show every year, so we've got a lot of work to do, a lot of goats to shave and prep for, and Lydia is going to actually come with us and help at the show, so that's fun. It's a lot, but I'm excited for it because hopefully Violet does well. We'll see. We'll see how she does, but we're hoping that she does really well at the show. Not going to I'm not going to jinx it. Remember, we're doing every other week videos here during the summer, so we will see you in a couple weeks.
