Freshwater ecosystems harbor diverse aquatic creatures that remain hidden through camouflage, burrowing, and hiding behaviors; environmental changes like temperature fluctuations can trigger these creatures to emerge from hiding, revealing the rich biodiversity that exists in seemingly simple stream environments.

I Found Creatures I've NEVER Seen in My Wild Mud Ecosystem!Ajouté :
Today, I'm building a wild ecosphere in nature using a fresh bucket of stream sand. As the water clears, a hidden world is waking up. Welcome to the creek monster carnival. Just look at these bizarre locals. You have no idea what else is hiding down here.
>> [music] >> To find the richest variety of locals, I gathered these sand and rocks from multiple different spots along the stream. In the wild, many of these tiny, rare aquatic creatures are masters of camouflage. They either bury themselves deep within the sediment or spend their entire lives hiding under rocks, making them nearly impossible to spot. Until now, this bucket of wild sand is about to change everything. They never could have guessed that one minute they were minding their own business in the stream, and the next they'd be completely blind sided, packed up, and forced to move into this luxury panoramic glass apartment. In the micro world of this stream ecosystem, these scattered stones create perfect crevices tailored to be a safe harbor for the residents about to crawl out of the mud.
When building this temporary [music] ecosphere, the stone structure is key.
Now, the stage backdrop is officially set. We just wait for the water [music] to clear and the sediment to settle to see exactly what is hiding inside this bucket of rocks and sand.
While waiting an hour for the water to clear, I didn't let my camera sit idle, either.
Such a pity. This delicate supermodel spent years underwater with only a single day to live.
Thought it was just a dead leaf, but closer look revealed a sleeping master of disguise.
Once I woke him up, he went into overdrive, completely hyper, and eventually made his escape.
>> [music] >> Unlike the runner I just missed, this net-winged beetle is completely chilled out. Flashing a color this loud only works because he's packed with nasty toxins.
The tank water has finally cleared up.
To make sure any potential residents have plenty of oxygen in this summer heat, I hooked up an air pump for this temporary ecosystem.
Leaning in, I caught this guy mooning me. No idea what species it is yet.
Look, a tiny mayfly [music] nymph emerging from the rocks, quietly enduring its long aquatic stage, waiting for its only flight.
A big guy emerging from the rocks, a damselfly nymph, the ultimate assassin of the micro aquatic world.
Does it have a good temper? Or is it just full? A shrimp practically struts right past it as a dare, but it doesn't even flinch.
It's getting hot, but the tank unboxing keeps going. Look, a chubby worm crawling out. No idea what species, so I'll just call it the aquatic chubby sausage. Right next to it is a true master architect, a caddisfly larva living in a house of stone.
A tiny creek crab just flashed right past. Don't be fooled by its size, this guy is lightning fast and a master of disguise.
These little sand dwellers move insanely fast. Blink and they're back in hiding.
Catching them in full view takes some real time and patience. This is my very first time staring down a mayfly larva from this close. Those massive bulging eyes look exactly like a vintage pilot's leather helmet. It's just insanely cool.
But the most exciting part? More and more of these underwater hermits are finally showing up. This time, full view unlocked. Don't let that round body fool you. This guy is known as the pebble assassin. Not only is it lightning fast, but its bite packs a seriously painful punch.
The heat out here is absolute madness.
I'm literally on the verge of a heat stroke. I was just trying to grab some leaves to dynamic shade these little guys from the blazing sun. But the second my hand touched the water, my heart dropped. It's almost at my body temperature. I have to move right now.
One minute of delay and this entire tank is going to be wiped out. Flushing out most of the water to drop [music] the temp fast, it's the quickest, simplest fix I can think of right now. But honestly, I don't know how many of them I can still save.
This was a fatal mistake. I got so caught up in filming that I forgot the most crucial factor of all, the water temperature. I waited quietly for a few minutes and took a closer look.
It seemed like things inside the tank were starting to change.
Fortunately, it wasn't as bad as I feared. It actually survived, thank goodness. This thing honestly looks like a bison in the water. From what I know, just like the toe biter, it secretes toxic saliva and its bite might be even worse. Personally, I don't have the guts to do a pain test with it, but if possible, I'd love to invite Mr. Coyote Peterson over to show us what a bite on the foot actually feels like.
I thought cooling it down [music] was just to save their lives, but once the water temp went back to normal, I noticed something crazy. The mud started waking up and even more strange, interesting creatures began crawling out than before. It's like that sudden temp wave just forced all these hidden locals out of hiding.
Take a look at this one. It looks like a piece of green thread or a tiny centipede in the water, but it's not a centipede [music] at all. When it crawls along the bottom, its body just wiggles non-stop like a wave. If I'm not mistaken, this should be a midge larva.
And look at this one. Our little underwater dancer is putting on quite a show. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I never would have believed a dobsonfly larva had these kinds of moves. Seriously though, it's actually got some pretty good rhythm.
Right now, the scene at this stream monster festival is getting more and more lively. More characters are starting to make their entrance.
I can't even keep up anymore. They all have completely different looks. One pops up and then a totally [music] different one flashes by right after.
I desperately need an encyclopedia to figure out who they are. Even though they're all the exact same species, they look nothing like anything you'd normally see. If you're eating right now, I highly suggest you turn off the video immediately. What you're about to see is something I never expected. I'm positive it wasn't because it got squeezed by a rock. It literally pooped right in front of my face and I just could not handle that scene. I'm totally grossed out by its poop. Thanks for watching. I got to get out of here. See you guys next time.
