She did not slow down.
The fence line was still there. The permanent posts and wire that Emmet had run in 1952 and the grass along it was still tall in the dormant season thick and layered from decades of uninterrupted growth.
From the road driving past at highway speed it looked the way it had always looked to people who did not know what they were seeing. It looked like nobody had been paying attention. That was the thing about Imogene Langford story that the county had never quite been able to hold in its mind all at once even after the auction even after the drought even after the ledger had been open on the workbench for anyone who cared to read it.
