Nepal marks Everest Day, honours record climbers and urges himalayan protectionAñadido:
Nepal on Friday marked the 73rd Everest Day by honoring record-holding climbers while renewing calls for the protection of the Himalayas amid rising global temperatures and growing concerns over climate change. Hundreds of mountaineers and Everest summiters gathered in Kathmandu for an awareness rally through the city streets before being felicitated by the government in recognition of their achievements in scaling the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. The Sherpa community of Nepal is mainly dependent on mountaineering and expeditions. They have been assigned to fix the rope to the summit, which officially opens the summit window to the climbing enthusiasts. For being stronger in the high altitude, Sherpa are well suited for Alpine style expeditions on the Himalayas. Climbers mainly need them to carry the oxygen, the gears, and as a safety on the summit path. They are highly recognized as elite mountaineers and experts in the high altitude adventures.
Recent studies show Mount Everest glaciers have lost nearly 2,000 years of ice in just three decades.
