[00:00:04]This is Hampton Park located in Charleston, South Carolina.

[00:00:08]Right here where this water sits was once a prison camp for over 250 black prisoners who were captured during the Civil War. The first Memorial Day took place right here. It was a celebration of those 250 soldiers that died. They died from diseases and other sicknesses.

[00:00:24]Over 250 of them were buried in one big mass grave and black workers dug them out individually placing them in all of their own graves. And right here in this area was a big parade with over 10,000 residents from Charleston. Today they tell you that Memorial Day is for US military people who died in the service, but the reality, the true reason behind Memorial Day sits right here where I am.
