LED Bulb Not Working The Surprising Fix Most People Don’t Know!
Added:This LED light bulb has stopped working.
Most people would assume it's broken and replace it with a new one. But, I'm not ready to jump to that conclusion. What interests me isn't whether it still works.
It's why it stopped working in the first place. Today, I'm going to open this light bulb, learn how it works, identify the exact component that failed, and see whether it has a chance to light up again. If a single tiny component is enough to make an entire [music] light bulb get thrown away, that's a real shame. Let's get started.
To find out why this light bulb stopped working, the first thing I need to do is open it. I use a thin blade to separate the plastic diffuser from the bulb housing, while trying to keep all the internal parts intact for more accurate inspection.
This is the LED board that holds all the LED chips. Just by looking at it, >> [music] >> it's almost impossible to tell which LED chip has failed. That's why I'm going to make a simple testing tool to check each LED chip individually and pinpoint exact cause of failure.
>> [bell] >> While I'm finishing this testing tool, >> [music] >> I'd like to share something very important with you. In most household LED light bulbs, [music] all the LED chips are connected in series. That means if just one LED chip fails and creates an open circuit, [music] the entire light bulb will stop working even though all the other chips are still functioning normally. This is also the most common problem I encounter when [music] repairing failed LED light bulbs. So, there's a very good chance that this light bulb has only one or few defective LED chips.
>> Now, let's test it and identify the exact component that's causing problem.
Today's testing tool [music] is very simple. I'm using two sharpened pop rivets as probe tips along with battery holder and a 9-V battery as a power source. When I touch the two probes to the terminals of each LED chip, any working chip >> [music] >> will light up immediately. If a chip shows no response at all, that's the one that needs to be replaced. [music] This method allows me to identify the failed component without removing or replacing the entire LED board.
After testing each LED one by one, I finally found a defective chip. To avoid any mistakes during the repair, I marked its exact location before replacing [music] it.
For the replacement, I salvaged a working LED chip from an old LED board.
Before removing [music] the chip, there's one very important thing you need to pay attention to. Make sure to identify and mark the positive and negative terminals of the LED chip before taking it off.
>> [music] >> This step is extremely important because if the replacement chip is installed in the wrong direction, the light bulb won't work and you'll have to redo the entire soldering process.
>> Once I confirm the correct polarity, I use a heat from a lighter or any suitable heat source to warm the solder joints. As soon as the solder melted, the old LED chip could be lifted off easily without affecting the surrounding components. Next, I place a replacement LED chip in the exact same position with the correct polarity and soldered it securely back onto the circuit board.
>> [music] [music] >> While replacing this LED chip, [music] I'd like to ask you something. So, there's no need to worry because it doesn't affect the performance of the light bulb. A quick wipe with a paper towel is enough to remove most of these marks. If you want to clean it more thoroughly, you can use a little rubbing alcohol to restore the circuit board to its original condition.
At this point, the replacement is complete. Now, it's time to find out whether all that effort was worth it. I reinstalled the circuit board into the light bulb housing and got ready to apply power.
