Ausia’s methodical approach to structural sequencing demonstrates that successful off-grid living requires as much logical foresight as it does physical labor. This project serves as a practical masterclass in construction logic, proving that the right order of operations is the true foundation of architectural integrity.

Framing the Future! Ceiling Joists & Plywood Walls in Our Shipping Container
Added:Good morning. Today we're going to be working on the interior of the shipping container again. What we'll be working on is cutting the wood for the joists because until we get those cut and installed, we won't be able to put up the plywood walls, which we're hoping to get to today. But before we do that, this brush that we had pulled out several days ago is finally dry enough to get burnt. So, we're going to work on that first. Luckily, our monsoon season has started and everything is pretty much saturated. But I still do like to keep the garden hose handy and soak around the burn barrel just for any of the stray pieces that like to fall out.
It's a nice sunny day today, but that is going to change the forecast. It says that we're supposed to get rain, but it has been wrong in the past before.
Well, thankfully all of that is gone and it's burnt away. We did keep the bigger chunks to put with our wood pile before getting into the interior construction.
We did go to town yesterday and I didn't find any sofas, but here's what I found.
Resale store, Habitat for Humanity.
Well, cuz it rained, they don't have nothing outside.
So, no 50% off. Oh, cute bike, though.
If this sectional wasn't so big, that'd be awesome. Yeah, all their stuff is here. Our full size.
This one's cute here.
It has recliners built in.
Wing back chair. That's interesting.
Nothing really this time. Yeah, they just have kind of odds and ends cabinets. So, nothing I could really use unless I wanted to mix and match, which I don't want to do.
And these look pretty old. 80s style cabinets. I'm still looking for that console to go under the TV, but I don't see anything.
That's a cool coffee table.
Uh, that's kind of narrow, but that's still too wide.
Oh, look. Look, they have a foosball table. Isn't that cool?
Well, they were kind of low on supplies.
The last time I came here, they had so much stuff. It was ridiculous, but oh well. Goodwill. They definitely have their Halloween out. Oh, look at this little sofa. H darn. No consoles here either. Well, that but I want something with drawers.
They got some sofas over there. Oh, that's a nice leather sofa.
That's uh too big though. Oh, that's a 80s flashback couch right there. That looks comfy. A double recliner. Look, they have adultsiz Legos.
$13. They kind of match this thing glass.
>> Oh, sure.
>> Hey, don't be judgy.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Too much stuff.
So, I ended up getting some lamps. I didn't find a couch, but I did find some lamps. They're really cool. They're acrylic lamps. It's unfortunate I wasn't able to find a sectional or some sofas, but I'll just keep on looking.
Eventually, I'll find something. I think I'm going to check on Marketplace and see if I can find anything there cuz sometimes they have some really good stuff. Now, some things that I've seen on the site have been kind of pricey. It surprised me, but not everything. You can usually find a good deal. Oh, it's getting hot already. Better get started.
Let's check out the supply closet, aka the other shipping container.
Oh, open this door, too.
Oh, yeah. I need to keep these doors opened. It's [snorts] getting a little warm in here.
need some ventilation. Now, I do already have the supplies for this right here.
It's half inch for the walls.
Then, I think I bought one quarter inch to try on the ceiling and see how that goes. I don't want it to be too heavy on the ceiling. Oh, did I forget to take you for a walk, Mumu? Our morning walk.
Okay, hold on. I'll be right back. So, we'll start over here and work our way towards the front.
So definitely want to get this section done here. But Jeff already got the 12volt system mounted. Now we have a 48vt system. We could have dumbed down and went 12vt that way, but it was much easier to just get this plug in and then get this here. This is the converter and this is the box with all the DC outlets, the USB and also the plugs. There's two plugs there. And this will run our pump, which is already plugged in. That brings our water in here from the main big tank. And also, it's going to run our weather station and Wi-Fi, which right now are in Panda. Well, at least the weather station monitor is. The actual weather station is mounted right there that keeps a log of our weather, rain, and wind. Speaking of panda, I have put a trap there. And I have already caught two huge packrats. There is a packrat nest in there. I have gotten rid of that packrat nest several times, but they just keep on coming back and rebuilding the nest. So, I just put a trap here.
How we get rid of the packrats is I have a spot over here and I just lay them out. Actually, this morning, I think the crow knew it was breakfast time and it followed me over here. It was circling around and it saw me walk over here. One flew overhead and there was already one here. This is the spot with the stump and I just put the rodents on the stump and the ravens come by and get them.
Definitely a circle of life. They're feeding the birds here. Don't just bury them. Where the heck is my dog? Oh, well, there's Kellogg.
Good catalog. Where's Mumu? Is it too hot for her to go for a walk? It is starting to warm up. Mumu.
All right. Come on. I'll take you for a little stroll. Come on, Kaga.
Little slowpoke.
Actually, Mumu's a slowpoke. There she is. She finally caught up. It is pretty warm and sunny, so we'll just do this driveway.
Go, go, go.
The pond is completely dried out.
We decided to take a break because it was getting a bit too hot even in the shipping container. that it's a little later in the day now and I think a huge storm is coming our way. I've already heard like five or six lightning crashes. Momo, what is that? You better get inside.
Feels nice though. What are you doing, Kellogg? Huh? Are you supervising the sofa?
Anyways, um not sure if we're going to be able to get to the walls if uh the rain starts, but I guess we go ahead and start um pulling them over here cuz uh some of them we don't even have to cut.
We're just going to have to nail them up. Guess we could go ahead and do that now. I've got the shipping container open over there.
>> [music] >> My neighbors and I will always say that there's a mother ship hovering above us cuz everywhere else will get rain except us. It's blue skies above us. That weird Hey, hey.
[music] Okay, we have a little dilemma. I forgot that we had to get the rafters in first cuz I have to toenail them in and we already have these walls up. So, we might have to pull these walls back.
I'll see if I can get up in there and toenail them. We have these five rafters.
Okay, stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop.
[music] We are not prepared to put the rafters up yet. So, we had to clear this room. I said I wasn't going to put more furniture in here, and I did. Well, this is what happens. We got to move all the furniture. And then we had to take that big mirror down cuz it was already screwed up here. So, these two walls have to come out as well. And we had to cut the rafters down. I don't know why I was thinking that they just fit in there. No, they're um not 8t. It's 92 in across. But all the rafters have been cut down now. And mostly everything is out of here except Kellogg's chair. He likes to lick himself in.
pain.
Hey, [music] baby.
All the walls are down and Jeff cleaned up all the nails and now he's getting the rafters up. I think this is the last one. We're not laying them down like that, but just >> No, I'm just putting them down so we know which ones aren't nailed.
>> All right, time to go ahead and nail in the rafters.
>> [music] >> We've got all the rafters that we put in place secured. I didn't take in consideration that this has to be a double rafter here. So, we're missing a board. And over here, so that way we can attach the ceiling. There has to be another rafter at the end. So, we need at least one, two more boards. These walls can go back up cuz we're done with that. I still need to finish the insulation. We did get the other bag when we were in town. Made it to Home Depot. So much insulation to choose from, but we've got what we came for.
You ready, Mumu? You ready to go back home? But this shouldn't take me too long. I can't do it right now cuz the stuff's in the way. Right, sleepy head?
I think first things first is we're going to get these walls back up. But that means we have to remove all the nails. So, there's a little prep work we're going to have to do first.
Now that we've got all the nails out of the plywood, we can put them back up on the wall. This was a unnecessary step. I should have thought ahead and got the rafters before the walls, but I jumped the gun on this one. Oh well, you know, at least the rafters are up.
So, it's got to go your way, right?
Heat. Heat.
[music] We've got this wall up. Looks good. The only thing I don't like is I bought this plywood from our hardware store and it was pretty bad plywood. Both sides have these knots that are indented. So, if I decide to put wallpaper up, that's going to mess with that. So, I'll have to putty those in. There's one, two, three spots. The rest of them are just dark spots, but at least they're flush. Oh, another thing is that I decided I wanted the mirror to be moved over there, and I'm going to put a painting over this chair here, or possibly the coat rack. One more thing. We've got to get this board up. While Jeff's working on taking that apart and cutting the board for that, I'm going to go ahead and fix dinner cuz I think the doggies are hungry. I'm hungry. Jeff's hungry. Everybody's hungry. Mumu's awkwardly staring at me. She's hungry.
Since it's getting so late, I made something easy. The bagged pie. It's already premade.
So much easier. I'm going to make some garlic bread, cheesy garlic bread to go with it. So, I'll let that cool down.
I'll go and prep the garlic bread.
All right, dinner is served. And the garlic bread is done. And so is the puppy's food. Okay, that's all cut. Got the first piece in the outlet installed.
So, I just got to cut this last piece here.
This is pretty late for us and [snorts] I want to go ahead and get this done.
Don't y'all wander off too far, puppies.
Okay, that's done. He already marked the spot here and here where the bolts are going to go in.
[music] >> [music] [music] >> Perfect. Now I can finally take the film off.
I've been waiting to do this.
Everybody's been complaining. They're like, "What is all those marks on your TV?" I'm like, "That's the stupid film."
Guess we don't need the energy uh guide anymore.
Oh, no.
Yay.
Oh, that looks good.
Hope it's not too high. Okay, we're counting things right now. So, we need one. Oh, wait. No. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Eight more piece or eight more 2 by4s. And then we need one, two, three, four, five plywood. But we have four. So we only need one more. Oh no, we need two more cuz this one here. One, two, three.
Yeah, we have four pieces left. Coming along nicely. Oh. Um, I guess I should go and get my lamps for the tables that I bought when I was at the store. Okay, let's get these lamps out.
Oh, I'm excited. I'll just grab the shades first.
Come on. Where are you doing? Get out.
[laughter] Silly dog. You thought we were going for a ride. Oh, that's one of my favorite ones there.
And Oh, yeah. This one.
Need to take trash off. Oh, yeah. Both of these. And I like that clear acrylic one, too. But these ones here are going to look awesome. Look, even go with the stained glass. Okay. [sighs] I think this one will go over here.
Oh, no. And this one will go over here.
Oh. Oh, God. I need to fix that. Look at that. I don't think it's supposed to be leaning like that. So, that one needs to be fixed. I'll just use that one here.
And this one is already up. Let's turn it on.
Oh, that might be a little too bright.
Uh, it's not bad. I like the I like it. Got dirty. Yeah, I know. That's what I was saying. There's only one bulb, so I might get dimmer bulbs so it's not so bright. But I [snorts] like it. Looks good over there. Well, it's starting to actually look like a living space. Now, I've [music] got to start deciding how I'm going to finish the walls. But I got the shade on the acrylic one. That looks good. Need to get a light bulb for that one. And also get dimmer bolts for this one over here. I must have got a bad bag because uh they're not as long as the other ones. And also [music] um they're usually perforated every other one. None of these are. And I started to try to tear it, but it's not tearing well. I want to thank y'all for hanging out with me during this video.
