Happiness is a fleeting response to conditions, not a permanent destination; true freedom comes from accepting that life naturally fluctuates between highs and lows, and peace is found by releasing the demand that happiness must be constant rather than by fighting every low or clinging to every high.

THE MORE YOU CHASE HAPPINESS, THE MORE YOU SUFFER | Master Shi Heng Yi
Added:The chase for happiness is something [music] that I very quickly gave up already.
>> People treat happiness like a destination. They believe that if enough things go right, they will finally arrive there. The right work, the right relationship, more money, more recognition. But when happiness becomes the destination, the present always feels incomplete. You're quietly telling yourself [music] that what you have now is not enough. Then you start checking yourself all day. Do I feel good [music] yet? Why am I not happier?
The mind is no longer experiencing the day. It is measuring the day. And when every moment must make you happy, almost every moment will eventually disappoint you.
>> I'm not searching for happiness.
I'm searching for peace.
>> Happiness and peace sound similar, but they are not the same. Happiness usually depends on conditions. Something goes your way. Someone praises you. You receive good news. The feeling appears, and when the condition changes, the feeling changes with it. You catch happiness, and then you have to chase it again.
Peace does not mean your inner [music] state never moves. It means every change outside you does not completely take control inside you. You can feel disappointment without letting it ruin the whole day. Happiness changes with what happens. Peace changes how you meet what happens.
>> This life is not here to give you pleasantness at all times.
>> The expectation [music] of constant pleasantness runs so deep that most people carry it without noticing. When something goes wrong, the feeling is not only pain. Another thought appears underneath it. This should not be happening. That second layer is where much of the extra suffering begins. The difficult event may already hurt. Then the mind adds another fight by refusing to accept that it is happening. [music] Sometimes something genuinely needs to change.
But discomfort is not always proof that the path is wrong. Effort, uncertainty, and disappointment also appear when you are learning, building, loving, or taking responsibility.
A difficult feeling [music] is not always telling you to escape.
>> If there's happiness, there is sadness.
[music] If something can rise, something must fall. If you can attain something, there's something to lose.
>> The problem is not that life moves up and down. The problem is the belief that it should only go up. When happiness appears, the mind quickly becomes attached to it. You stop simply enjoying the moment and begin protecting it.
How long will this last? What could take it away? [music] How can I get it back?
Fear enters the good moment before the good moment has even [music] ended.
Then sadness appears, and the mind panics because the high is gone.
Both states naturally change, but clinging to one and fighting the other allows every rise [music] and fall to control you.
>> You're creating your fantasy how this life is supposed to be, then [music] you're being faced with the reality, and then you're wondering why you're having such a [music] difficult time.
>> Before reality arrives, the mind has already written the script. The job works out, the relationship stays, the plan leads somewhere good, your effort produces the result you expected. Then reality arrives without following the script. The situation itself may already be painful, but the mind adds extra suffering by comparing what happened with what was supposed to happen.
Now you are dealing with the real event and arguing with the fact that it exists.
Reality is not always failing you.
Sometimes it is simply refusing to follow the life you invented in your head.
And much of that extra pain lives inside one word, should.
>> So, yes, searching for that one state called happiness right now [music] is not possible.
>> Most people spend their lives hoping the right conditions will finally arrive, and happiness will settle in for good.
But happiness is a response.
It appears when the moment calls [music] for it.
Then it changes.
That does not make happiness meaningless.
It means happiness was never designed to become a permanent condition.
When a good moment arrives, experience it without demanding that tomorrow must feel the same.
When a difficult feeling arrives, give it time to move before deciding that your entire life is wrong.
Freedom begins when you put down the demand [music] to be happy all the time.
The mind becomes quieter because it is no longer chasing something [music] that cannot stay. This began with one unexpected admission.
He gave up the chase for happiness, not because happiness [music] is bad, not because life should be cold or joyless.
He gave up the demand that happiness must [music] become permanent.
That demand changes the way you experience everything. A good moment is no longer enough because part [music] of you is already afraid of losing it.
A difficult moment becomes heavier because you believe it should not be there.
Even an ordinary day starts to feel disappointing because nothing exciting happened.
The mind writes a strict script for how life is supposed to go.
Then reality arrives without following it. That is where the [music] second struggle begins. There is the event itself. Then there is your argument with the event. [music] There is disappointment. Then there is the thought that disappointment means your whole life is wrong. There is sadness.
[music] Then there is the fear that sadness will never leave. Peace begins when that second fight becomes quieter.
You stop reading every difficult day as proof that your life is broken. You stop demanding that every hour must [music] reward you. You let a good moment be good without trying to keep it forever.
And you let a difficult moment move without turning it into your identity.
The highs will still arrive. The lows will still follow.
That is not failure. That is the [music] natural movement of life. You do not have to fight every low. And you do not have [music] to hold on to every high.
Happiness can then be enjoyed without becoming another burden you must protect. Life will continue to change.
But every change no longer has the power to completely change you. That is the difference between chasing happiness and finding peace.
Freedom begins when you stop demanding that life must always feel good before you are willing to live it.
