Were Ancient Humans Actually Smarter Than You?
Added:Drop you in the middle of a forest 10,000 years ago alone, no phone, no map, no lighter. How long do you last?
Be honest. Most of us wouldn't make it a week. Now, flip it.
Drop a person from the Ice Age into your world, handed a smartphone, told to survive a week in a city, would they really do any worse than you did in the forest?
For decades, pop culture has told us the same story. Cavemen grunting, dragging clubs, barely smarter than the animals they hunted. Modern humans, meanwhile, split the atom and put a rover on Mars.
Case closed, right? We win. Except when scientists actually measure this, the answer gets a lot more uncomfortable.
Their brains were, on average, bigger than yours.
And there's an ongoing scientific argument about whether human brains have literally been shrinking for thousands of years. So, today, were ancient humans actually smarter than us? Let's look at the actual evidence.
Let's start with the most basic, most Googleable fact, brain size.
The average modern human brain measures somewhere around 1,300 to 1,400 cubic centimeters.
Neanderthals, our close evolutionary cousins who lived alongside early Homo sapiens, often had brains that were, on average, larger than ours.
Larger, not smaller. The stereotype of the dim-witted caveman has a brain volume problem right out of the gate.
Now, before you feel too bad about yourself, brain size alone doesn't equal intelligence. What matters more is internal structure, organization, and how efficiently different brain regions communicate.
A bigger engine isn't automatically a faster car if the wiring is different.
In fact, when researchers compared brain region measurements between Neanderthals and early modern humans, they found something surprising.
In several brain regions, there was more anatomical difference between two groups of living modern humans, people with different ancestries, than between Neanderthals and the humans who lived next to them.
In other words, using brain shape alone to declare one group smarter than the other doesn't really hold up. It's not that simple. But, the size question doesn't stop with Neanderthals because something even stranger happens once you look at our own species.
Here's the part that should genuinely bother you. Multiple studies measuring skulls across tens of thousands of years suggest that the average human brain has gotten smaller since the end of the last ice age. By some estimates, around 10%.
Roughly 100 to 150 cubic centimeters of volume gone.
That is not a small number.
That's like your brain quietly losing a golf ball's worth of itself over the last few thousand years, and nobody sent you a memo. So, why would evolution make our brains smaller? A few competing theories.
One theory, bodies shrank, too, as the climate warmed after the ice age, and brains generally scale with body size. Smaller bodies, smaller brains, no real cognitive loss implied.
Another theory, and this one's the interesting twist.
As human societies grew larger and more specialized, individuals stopped needing to personally know everything.
You didn't need to master hunting, tool making medicine and navigation all by yourself anymore because your community collectively held that knowledge instead.
Researchers who study this call it relying on the wisdom of the crowd instead of the wisdom of the individual.
Some scientists have even compared this to what happens in ant colonies where individual ants get simpler as the colony's collective intelligence gets more complex. The theory goes your brain doesn't need to store as much anymore because your species learned to store knowledge outside of individual brains.
First in other people, then in writing and now on a phone in your pocket. But here's the honest twist within the twist.
This is genuinely contested science.
Another research team re-examined the same data and concluded they could find no reliable evidence that brain size has decreased at all in the last 30,000 years.
Possibly not even in the last 300,000.
They argue the original sample size was too small and too selectively grouped to prove a real trend. So even scientists studying skulls for a living can't fully agree on whether this shrinkage is real.
Which tells you something important before we go any further. Measuring ancient intelligence is a lot messier than a highlight reel of big brain versus small brain makes it look.
Let's set brain volume aside for a second and ask a more practical question. Who actually knew more?
A hunter-gatherer living 20,000 years ago typically had to know personally in their own head which plants were edible and which would kill you.
How to track an animal by its footprints.
How to predict weather from cloud patterns and wind.
How to start a fire without a lighter.
How to navigate hundreds of miles using stars, terrain, and memory alone.
Now, be honest with yourself.
Could you identify five edible plants growing near your house right now?
Could you start a fire with nothing but sticks?
Could you navigate across unfamiliar terrain without a phone?
Anthropologists who study modern hunter-gatherer societies, the closest living comparison we have to ancient humans, consistently describe their practical knowledge as staggering.
Encyclopedic understanding of hundreds of plant and animal species, weather systems, and terrain held entirely in memory and taught orally across generations.
Individually, the average ancient human very likely carried more raw, practical, life-or-death knowledge in their own head than the average person alive today.
Most of us have outsourced nearly all of it to supermarkets, to doctors, to Google. That's twist number one.
Now, here's the counterargument.
Here's where modern humans actually pull ahead, and it has nothing to do with individual brain power. It's about something researchers call cumulative culture.
No single ancient human invented the smartphone in their head. No single modern human did either, honestly.
It took thousands of specialists building on centuries of accumulated discoveries, each person only understanding a tiny slice of the whole picture.
This is the real superpower of modern intelligence.
It's not that any one of us is smarter than an ancient human.
It's that we've built a system where millions of specialized brains can each contribute a small piece, store it permanently in writing, and pass it forward, so nobody ever has to relearn it from scratch.
An ancient human who is the single most knowledgeable person in their entire band, maybe 50 people, still knew less in total than what's sitting in your pocket right now, accessible in 3 seconds.
That's not a fair fight.
But, it's also not really about individual intelligence anymore. It's about the size of the network you're plugged into. So, which matters more when judging intelligence? What's in one person's skull, or what a whole species can build together over thousands of years? That question doesn't have a clean answer, and this next test makes it even messier.
Scientists have actually tried to measure ancient cognition directly by getting modern humans to relearn ancient skills and recording their brain activity while doing it. Researchers have had modern volunteers attempt to make the same stone tools early humans made hundreds of thousands of years ago while scanning their brain activity.
The result, successfully making these tools required serious planning, precise motor control, and spatial reasoning, activating brain networks strikingly similar to the ones used for complex problem solving today.
Some researchers even suspect these tool-making brain circuits maybe linked to how human language evolved in the first place. Here's the twist.
Most modern volunteers in these studies struggle badly at first. It takes real dedicated practice to make a functional stone tool, even for smart, educated modern humans with full access to instructions and video demonstrations.
Meanwhile, ancient toolmakers did this from childhood, taught hands-on by people who'd been doing it for generations with zero written instructions. So, if you gave a modern person a Stone Age skills test, most of us would fail. And if you gave an ancient human an algebra exam, they'd fail, too. Not because either group is less capable, but because intelligence isn't one universal number. It's built for the world you actually grow up in.
So, after all that, who wins?
Honestly, the most accurate scientific answer is it's the wrong question.
Researchers who study this describe ancient humans and modern humans less as smarter or dumber and more as having different cognitive toolkits, each finely tuned for a completely different world.
Individually, per person, ancient humans very likely carried more raw survival knowledge than you do.
Collectively, as a connected species, we now know almost unimaginably more than any hunter-gatherer band ever could because we stopped relying on any one brain to hold it all.
Bigger brains didn't necessarily mean smarter.
Smaller brains today don't necessarily mean dumber.
What actually changed is where the intelligence lives inside individual skulls versus spread out across billions of connected ones.
So, let's go back to the start. Drop yourself in that Ice Age forest and you'd likely be dead within days. Drop an Ice Age human in your world with a smartphone and there's a real chance they'd figure out the touchscreen faster than you'd figure out how to start a fire.
Neither of you would be the dumb one.
