The Trump administration issued a new policy requiring non-citizens staying in the United States longer than 30 days to register with the federal government, with failure to comply resulting in severe consequences including fines ranging from $998 per day to $5,000 and potential imprisonment; however, those who choose to self-deport can avoid criminal records, retain their earnings, and remain eligible for subsidized flights back home, while also keeping doors open for future legal immigration.

LIVE: Trump to Non-Citizens, "Register in 30 Days or Get Deported" | Firstpost America | N18G
Added:Hello everyone and welcome to First Post America. I'm Eric Ham coming to you live from the nation's capital in Washington DC. And over the next few minutes, we'll take you from the United States and around the world covering all the top stories of the day. But before that, here's a look at the latest headlines. US President Donald Trump says he will soon announce tariffs on imported semiconductors days after excluding electronic products from reciprocal tariffs. Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Vietnam as part of his three-nation tour of Southeast Asia to strengthen regional ties and offset the impact of tariffs unleashed by Washington.
Iran's foreign minister will visit Russia this week to discuss the first round of nuclear talks held with the United States over the past weekend. Ecuador's incumbent President Daniel Naboa wins reelection with a promise to continue his crackdown on cartels and one of the region's most violent countries. and an allwomen crew including singer Katie Perry and journalist Lauren Sanchez to embark on a space trip today with Blue Origin spaceflight.
We begin in Washington where the Trump administration has issued a fresh warning to foreign nationals living in the United States. The Department of Homeland Security says non-citizens staying longer than 30 days must register with the federal government and failure to comply with this order will result in severe punishment, including fines and possibly imprisonment. In a social media post, the federal agency added, "President Donald Trump and Director Christy Noom have a clear message for illegal migrants. Leave now and self-epport."
The president, when he called me after he won the election and said, "You know, Christie, what would you like to do in my administration? What would you like to help me with?" I said, "Sir, I'd like to uh be the Secretary of Homeland Security." And he said, "Why would you want to do that?" And I said, "Sir, because it's your number one priority, and you need to have someone in that job that is actually strong enough to do what you promised the American people, who will make the decisions and continue making the decisions even when it gets difficult months and months and even years after you take office. We're going to have to follow through on that promise." Now the post on social media platform X also features list of benefits and consequences for migrants under the self-deportation warning.
Non-citizens who choose to self-deport will avoid a criminal record in the United States. They can also keep their earnings and be eligible for a subsidized flight back home.
Self-deportation will also keep the door open for legal immigration in the future. However, migrants who overstay after receiving the final order of removal will have to pay a fine of $998 per day. Meanwhile, a fine of $1,000 to $5,000 will be imposed on foreign nationals who declare they will leave but then fail to self-deport.
Non-citizens could also get jail time and a lifetime ban from legal immigration to the United States.
President Trump's latest rule will not directly affect visa holders, green card recipients, and work and study permit holders. However, it does require them to carry the proof of their legal status at all times. The new rule might affect H-1B visa holders living in the US past their grace period without jobs and international students residing unlawfully in the country. The latest warning comes as President Trump eyes the largest deportation in American history with a goal of deporting 1 million migrants within his first year in office. And while experts cast doubt over the feasibility of such a goal, the Trump administration is doing everything possible to achieve its unprecedented target.
And staying in the United States, authorities in Pennsylvania have arrested a 38-year-old man after an arson attack on Governor Josh Shapiro's official residence in Harrisburg on Sunday. The suspect named Cody Balmer allegedly hopped a fence and intentionally set the house on fire while Shapiro and his family were asleep. Sharing his ordeal, Shapiro said he and his family were abruptly awakened and evacuated by police in the middle of the night.
Good afternoon. Last night at approximately 2 o'clock in the morning, while my family and I were asleep upstairs here at the governor's residence, one of the state troopers assigned to our detail, banged on our door, woke us up, and told us we had an emergency and needed to leave immediately.
Together, we secured all of our children, our two dogs, our family that was staying with us, and the troopers safely evacuated us from the governor's residence. The 51-year-old governor added no one was injured in the attack, though the blaze significantly damaged his home. Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania State Police said the suspect faces charges of attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault against an enumerated person. We have uh as uh the colonel indicated, uh Cody Bomber is in custody. Uh we are preparing a criminal complaint to charge him. Uh this is not of record yet. Uh but the charges will include uh attempted murder, uh terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault against an enumerated person. These are all very serious charges. As with any uh uh charges, the defendant is presumed innocent. Uh we will file those charges uh within the next uh several hours and we will include a probable cause affidavit which will detail uh the the basis for this arrest. Now, while the motive behind the attack is not yet known, police say the suspect had a methodical plan to target Shapiro. He clearly had a plan. He was very methodical in his approach and uh uh moved through it u without a lot of hurry again in a very uh methodical planned uh manner uh and and carried it out although in a very short period of time. When I said that he was in the residence, he was inside for less less than a minute. U it all happened very quickly and and he was back out. As per state records, Balmer has a criminal background and is expected in court for a plea hearing in a separate assault case that occurred back in 2023. He also plead guilty to forgery and theft by deception in another case in 2016.
Sunday's attack at the governor's house took place just hours after Shapiro and his family celebrated the Jewish holiday Passover. The governor expressed gratitude for the messages he received, including from Vice President JD Vance.
He also criticized the rise of political violence in the United States, including the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2023 and two assassination attempts against President Donald Trump just last year.
And now to the war in Europe. Yesterday, two Russian ballistic missiles struck in the heart of the Ukrainian city of Sunumi, killing at least 34 people and injuring over 100 others. Witnesses described the scenes of horror with emergency services pulling people from rubble and it destroyed trolley bus nearby.
It is horror out there. I saw at least four bodies. A woman sitting next to me is my neighbor. Her grandson died in November and today her husband died on the street.
Now the attack which came on Palm Sunday a major Christian holiday drew swift and sharp condemnation. Ukrainian President Volder Mzilinski called it the work of quote unquote deranged scum in his evening address emphasizing the symbolic cruelty of launching such an attack on a religious holiday.
The strike hit the city center on Palm Sunday. Only filthy scum can act like this.
These were two Russian ballistic missiles. The first one struck a building, one of the university buildings. The second one exploded virtually over the street. 117 people were injured, including children, among them a girl born in 2025.
when you would have said that. In his interview with 60 Minutes on CBS, President Zalinsky also issued a direct appeal to President Donald Trump, urging him to visit Ukraine before making any deals with Russia to end the war. The Russian attack aboard Air Force One, President Donald Trump called it a horrible thing and claimed he was told it was a mistake. The commander-in-chief further maintained his position that negotiations are urgently needed. I think it was terrible and I was told they made a mistake. Uh but I think it's a horrible thing. I think the whole war is a horrible thing. I think the war is for that war to have started is an abuse of power. This country would have never allowed that war to have started if I were president.
Russia's attack on Ukraine comes after US special envoy Steve Whiteoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last week. The Kremlin said the meeting lasted more than four hours and focused on aspects of a Ukrainian settlement. Meanwhile, as Ukraine's allies scrambled for answers and solutions, with nearly 7 million Ukrainians still displaced as refugees, the war shows no signs of slowing down.
In fact, EU foreign ministers met in Luxembourg this morning to discuss the key challenges that the block is facing with Ukraine at the top of the pile. So, as diplomacy hangs in the balance, all eyes now turn to whether President Donald Trump will take up President Zilinsk's invitation and witness the war's grim reality. And today in Washington, President Donald Trump is meeting El Salvador's President Naib Bukelli at the White House. And at the heart of their partnership lies a hardline operation flying alleged gang members, many Venezuelans and Salvadorans to Al Salvador's infamous SECOT prison. While the president calls them enemy aliens, critics call it a dangerous game with human lives. One wrong for deportation like that of a Maryland resident has even ignited outrage and many legal battles. Our next report talks about what happens when one of the world's most powerful men meets the self-proclaimed quote unquote coolest dictator. El Salvador's President Naib Bukle meets US President Donald Trump today. Their Washington meeting comes amid rising controversy and legal battles and at the heart of it is a bold divisive deportation strategy.
In the crackdown to deport illegal migrants, the United States deported 10 more alleged gang members on Saturday. They arrived in El Salvador from Guantanamo Bay late that night. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a post on X on Sunday named the devotees from MS13 and Trendi Awa organizations.
Both these gangs are labeled foreign terrorist organizations by the United States. Soon after their deportation, they were immediately taken to El Salvador's Sikkot prison. Over the past four years, 21 million people poured into the United States. Many of them were murderers, human traffickers, gang members, and other criminals from the streets of dangerous cities all throughout the world. Because of Joe Biden's insane and very dangerous open border policies, they are now strongly embedded in our country. But we are getting them out and getting them out fast.
The terrorism confinement center or Sikot is Bukle's fortress. It's infamous for its tough crackdowns on gangs.
In a video posted online by El Salvador's Justice Minister, Gustavo Vtoro, detaininees were seen in shackles with their heads down marching out from the military planes and then eventually taken to the secot prison.
These deportations stem from a Trump era security alliance. Hailing Boule's cooperation, the commander-in-chief even called the deportes alien enemies. Since March, at least five US flights have landed in El Salvador.
Hundreds of Venezuelans and Salvadorans have been deported. Many were expelled under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, which allows wartime deportation of nationals from hostile nations. Now, even though the Trump administration says they have thoroughly vetted deportes, lawyers and families often site flimsy evidence like tattoos, clothing, or even mere suspicion.
I know nothing about him, and this week I discovered he belongs to the Trenda Ara criminal gang. If he does belong to the trend aragua, I would be living well. I wouldn't be starving. What they're doing with these boys is unfair.
They can't blame them just for having tattoos. My son was a tattoo artist and barber. He used to work with me in Bogotaa. The US Supreme Court recently weighed in. It ruled that detainees must receive fair deportation notice.
However, it left gaps for those already deported and one case is especially grabbing headlines. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was wrongly deported.
He has lived legally in the United States since 2019. However, in March, an administrative error sent him to Sikkot.
This so-called administration error has destroyed my family's happiness, my children's innocence.
Kilmar, if you can hear me, I'm still fighting for you.
Your brother, your mother, our children are still fighting for you. We're not going to give up hope.
Last Thursday, the Supreme Court ordered his return, but the Trump administration has defied the directive so far.
Officials argue they are only required to remove US obstacles, and they refuse to retrieve Garcia from El Salvador themselves. Is that the one that was not tread or rocka, but he was MS-13? Just the one that they've said needs to come back. No, but is was he MS-13?
Cuz I only know about that. I I don't know which. But if the Supreme Court said bring somebody back, I would do that. I respect the Supreme Court. With President Bule in Washington, the question is, will he stand by Trump's side or will the mounting legal pressure crack this alliance?
And finally today, parents across America may need to start saving for toy insurance because thanks to the President Trump's whopping 145% tariffs on China, your next Barbie could cost more than your last electricity bill.
Toy makers in China say they simply can't shoulder the added cost. So, it will have to be shared by American retailers and the consumers. Families may have to choose between premium playtime or substandard toys that go from fun to fractured within five minutes. So, the next time you step on a Lego, it may or may not hurt your foot, but it will definitely dent your wallet.
Here's our final report with more. I did a 90-day pause for the people that didn't retaliate because I told them if you retaliate, we're going to double it.
And that's what I did with China because they did retaliate. Thanks to a fresh round of US China trade tensions, Barb's Gone luxury. The humble toy aisle might soon resemble a high-end boutique. Brace yourselves, American parents, as Barbie's dreamhouse might need a dream loan.
Yes, that plastic dollhouse may cost more than your actual rent. China's toy industry is sounding the alarm.
They are warning that toys imported from China, the land where nearly 77% of America's play things are born, are about to come with designer price tags.
This is after Trump decided to slap a whopping 145% tariff on Chinese imports.
Reciprocal. I could have done that.
According to Mang, president of the China Toy and Juvenile Products Association, basically the UN for Barbie dolls, Uno cards, and Hot Wheels, these tariffs are already forcing retailers to renegotiate their toy orders.
She said, and I quote, "Manufacturers here cannot absorb the burden." Melang further explained in an interview what happens next. Retailers in the US will bear part of the cost. The rest will be passed on to the American consumers to pay. The parents will now have to choose between Barbie's Corvette or paying the electricity bill. To make matters even more thrilling, Mexico and Vietnam, America's toy plan B and C are also on the US tariff list. Vietnam is one of the worst hit countries with 46% while Mexico was spared by the reciprocal tariffs.
They already have a 25% tariff system in place by the United States.
So no matter where your child's next Lego set is assembled, chances are the price will go up or the quality will go down. And just when you thought it couldn't get any messier in February, Mattel, the company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels, hinted that it may raise prices. Mattel is also eyeing a complete revamp of its supply chain. Apparently, navigating a tariff-ridden toy market is harder than winning a game of Monopoly without flipping the board.
In 2024 alone, China shipped over 10.5 billion worth of toys to the US, a number that's likely to shrink or swell in price, depending on how the tariff tango plays out. Consumer groups have already warned that could wreak havoc on supply chains and more importantly on playroom harmony across the country.
So next time you're at the toy store sticker shocked by the cost of a plastic pony or a Nerf gun, you can thank a trade war dressed up as economic policy because nothing says childhood joy quite like explaining to a kid that Barbie didn't come from Target because she couldn't clear customs. That's our show for today. We certainly thank all of you for tuning in. and I'm Eric Ham coming to you live from Washington DC. We look forward to seeing you right back here again tomorrow. Thanks everyone.
Greeting you with aloha and namaste.
