This commentary effectively strips away the religious mystique to reveal the Vatican’s mosaics as a calculated masterclass in branding and durability. It is a sharp, modern perspective on how the Church weaponized aesthetics to project eternal authority.

BLAKE & RAVEN BE DOIN' ITALY [PART 2] | REWIND: The Podcast
Added:I came up with our theme song. Sometimes it's a lot of fun. Wait, hold on.
Usually it's a lot of fun. Sometimes it's a little rough, but Blake and Raven be doing stuff.
and Gabe >> [music] >> Okay, girl, go.
>> Oh.
>> [laughter] >> Wait, uh good morning. Um I am Sorry, Raven's better at this. Uh we are uh it's me, Gabe, and Sarah Blain.
>> Yay.
>> Uh we uh Raven's having a morning of requiem.
Um up there in the in the apartment. So, we are going to travel to a bakery.
Sarah Blain did not get to see the Colosseum with us yesterday. So, she is going to go wander, and then me and Gabe are going to go Are you going to go with us to the bakery?
>> Yeah.
>> Well, so we're all going to go to the bakery, and then she's going to go wander, and then me and Gabe are going to go look for souvenirs, and we're going to shop.
>> We're looking for local art.
>> Local art >> silk Italian scarf >> and um maybe some bottoms for me for this wedding cuz I don't know if the ones I have fit.
>> So.
Perfect.
>> All right, here we go.
>> [music] >> So, I was really jealous of Gabe and Raven yesterday, so I got one of these whipped cream bun things. [music] Marry What?
I don't know.
>> Maritozzi.
>> No, marry tosa Marry tosa Marry tosa whipped cream thing. And um I got like a ham moment, and then I got a cappuccino. I got it.
I love them.
Okay, so we're about to try this. How do How do you go about it? Do you go between the teeth?
>> Yeah, you just Um try it that way. Technically, you should do it the other way. [music] Yeah.
Girl, I know you can fit it in.
The way it looks like you just did a line of This is fierce.
Okay.
Girl.
>> Hey, we're here in the fashion district.
>> I have no idea.
>> Okay, we're here in the art district.
We're here in a district. We're here in We're No, we're here in the district cuz we're here. Raven's not, so it's kind of just like the district, but um, otherwise, beautiful statues, uh, gowns, beautiful gowns. We're going to go find some beautiful art.
>> Maybe some men's pants.
>> Maybe some men's pants, maybe a bag for me, maybe a book, maybe a journal, maybe leather, maybe leather, you know what I mean? Let's go.
>> Europe exploration at its finest.
>> Truly. Let's go.
>> [music] [music] >> Okay. So, Sarah Blaine found us another shop.
You found it on TikTok?
>> Yes, we appreciate all the TikTok recommendations from [music] everybody that ever posted about their travel experiences because, I'm sorry, >> It's so adorable.
>> Look at this.
Local artists. The shop is called Grand Cafe Marcel and the prices are wonderful. The best thing about art is it's so easy to fit in your suitcase. Like it's not going to add weight. We bought this for Raven cuz she's our sleeping beauty right now. And then look at our little Chanel store for us.
We love it. Um, so if you're coming to Rome, definitely [music] go by Cafe my style. A great place to get souvenirs for your family and friends [music] and yourself.
>> Literally.
Let's go. So, we are in a bookstore.
We're in the children's section right now, but it is beautiful. Is that Lena Dunham?
>> Who Paula?
>> Is that Lena Dunham? Comment below.
Um but I love I love like the little shops in Italy.
Like it's just so cool and they're so like I don't feel like we've been somewhere besides like a souvenir shop where we've seen the same thing twice.
What do you think?
>> No, for real.
>> And it's beautiful. People are actually really nice here.
>> We can get some postcards and a bookmark.
>> It makes me really nervous to go to Paris one day cuz I heard they're [ __ ] >> Honestly, no. Not all.
I mean, to be fair, we're [ __ ] as well.
>> Okay.
>> And then >> Gabe's biography.
>> She's back. I'm well rested and I'm ready to party at the Vatican.
>> I don't think those are synonymous.
>> Oh. Come with me. Okay, so I took a little rest time this morning.
And I had a great time.
I slept. I lived. I laughed.
Um but now I'm excited to go back into the world. So, we're headed to Morty sandwich shop.
So, we'll see you there.
Love you. Bye.
>> [music] >> All right.
You're in it.
>> I have the fried chicken.
I already took a little bite and it's good.
>> We're at Morty.
Uh it's very crowded, but >> I literally got I think the same thing I got yesterday and like the prosciutto mats and sun-dried tomatoes.
>> All right, and now we are headed to the Vatican City.
>> The smallest country in the world.
>> And we're about to tour St. Peter's Basilica and then the Vatican and then the Sistine Chapel.
>> So, we're going to tour St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican, and then the Sistine Chapel.
>> This is where one of the fingers go like this.
>> And we're not allowed to film in a lot of these places, so we will give our reviews.
>> Is that true?
>> In the Sistine you can't do you can't film or um take video or photos.
>> Is that the moment the ceiling?
>> I don't know.
So.
All right.
>> we'll see you there.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> So, welcome inside the biggest Catholic church in the world.
Okay. You see there is a very little section in the middle of the door.
>> I see she is >> Uh but we cannot see clearly what is the video. We see colors. We see red, blue, gold. Okay, there is a picture of God as an old man flying.
But, you cannot see God from down here because it's too far from And you cannot see God even when you walk on the balcony that goes all around the door. That was made on purpose. That was a way to say you don't have to see God to believe in God because God is always above us protecting us, watching us. What we can have is a suggestion of God, and that's it.
Uh what I want to show what I want to show you is inside the altar.
Okay, there is a glass casket with inside the mummy of a pope.
The mummy of the Pope Innocent the 11th.
He was pope in the 1600s. Okay, there is a bronze mask on the face and on the hands, but inside there is the actual body. Okay, this huge scene looks like a big painting looking from here, like a fresco. But, if you go closer and you look better, you realize that there is not painted at all.
You see?
>> Yeah.
>> It's a tile. It's a mosaic made by thousand and thousand of tiny piece of colored glass. Everything in this church is a mosaic. No paintings, no frescos in this place. So, the decorations inside the huge dome are mosaics. Even the altar in front of us here is a mosaic.
Even if you look up on the right there in the little dome where you see pictures of pop, they're mosaics as well.
So, why only mosaic in this place? Two reasons. First reason, the mosaic is more easy to preserve. It's made in colored glass. You clean once, it's good for a very long time.
Second reason, propaganda. Everything in here was meant to impress. Remember, the popes were kings.
Politics. This was a way to show to the people something never seen before. Not to we are kind of impressed. 500 years ago, this was something almost never seen before.
>> [music] [music] >> We just got done with the tour part.
We're going to go back in, but that was wild.
>> Wild. Would I have to pay to look like that?
>> No, but also I was really hoping that this would bring Gabe to Christ.
Failed. This was all a ploy >> [laughter] >> to bring Gabe to Jesus.
>> He is in wonder.
>> [laughter] >> Um, it's just been like the enormousness of it.
>> Also, just the like grandiosity, is that a word?
>> Yeah, grandiose.
>> Grandiose, and like everything's so old.
And y'all know, I ain't nothing [clears throat] in the world I love more than Jesus. So, seeing how like people like how he was depicted that long ago is really um, it's crazy.
>> Yeah, it's wild. Also, I know I'm going to get some flack for this, but not the chapel where they keep the spear of Jesus being the DJ.
>> Okay.
>> I'm sorry, they were like, "Nobody's allowed up here." He was like, "Well, they do microphones up there." And I'm like >> Literally, the spear that pierced the side of our Jesus Christ. Hold on, let me talk. That pierced the side of our Jesus Christ is up there with the microphones. I said, "Y'all couldn't pick another room?"
>> Y'all couldn't pick a better place to have the sound booth?
>> [laughter] >> It's wild.
>> Respectfully.
>> Respectfully.
>> Respectfully. The grandiousness of it is is crazy.
Um, a little creepy at times. I did not need to see a mummified >> Me, either. I don't need to see a mummified pope, either.
>> But, there are some people who that is very reverent to them, and we understand and we acknowledge, but for me >> As [music] it very much scared her.
>> I did not need to see that.
>> What up, everybody?
Should we do it upstairs?
What's up, everybody? I'm just kidding.
>> [laughter] >> Okay, so we are at the Vatican Museum.
>> Specifically, Palace.
>> Correct. And we stood in line Well, some of us did, some of us stood in line for like 60 billion hours. So, we're going to see relics, other cool stuff in here. It's going to be great.
So, when we did the last tour, that he was saying like half of it is where the Pope lives, half of it is the museum.
So, we are going to the museum part. We don't know if we can take pictures or not. Hopefully, we can, but we'll see inside.
>> [music] [music] >> Blake, so where are we at?
>> We're at the Museo Chiaramonti, and over there is the Sistine Chapel, but um this is like the storage unit [music] of heads.
>> [music] >> Okay, so whoever built the Sistine Chapel, I think they knew many years later people would want to come see it because they keep edging us.
Because it keeps saying this is at the end, but there's new always new ones of these, which we are enjoying >> Yeah, I don't know if there are any more robes.
This is really It's beautiful beautifully done. Big shout out to the Vatican people. Um my legs are tired, and I want to go to the Sistine Chapel.
>> And what's in there?
>> Some um more statues.
>> Some what?
>> More statues.
>> Okay.
Oh, see, now we got to turn. See, we made it We thought it was a long hallway.
>> This is beautiful.
>> I guarantee you Gabe and Sara Blanner back at room one.
>> I I I lost I think we're lost.
>> [laughter] >> Do you love how he's supposed to be filming us?
We haven't seen him in >> [music] [music] >> So, we're in this room right now with all these like deep paintings. I This had [music] to come from after the Bible times, but there's like pilgrim and then there's like a war.
Um I can't read Greek or Latin or whatever this is in. Italian. So, we've got all these ravens still trying to find a bench.
And then uh I guess it's another disciple. I really wish I knew, but we'll see.
What is it?
>> What you want me to do?
>> Okay, if the Cappella Sistina's big, so hopefully it's next.
Nope.
All right, we found Raven's favorite uh exhibit.
>> So, what is that?
>> This bench next to that.
More edging.
It's coming.
So, oh.
Whose apartment is this?
>> I want to be set >> What?
>> I want to be set free from this.
>> We have found another seat.
>> My lower back is on fire.
My left knee is giving me trouble.
>> Where? We want to see the Sistine Chapel so we can go to Apple Depot.
>> Um we need to Apple browse please.
Two hours ago.
>> And Gabe and uh Sarah Plain have also said their feet hurt. So, >> This is a lie.
>> He didn't.
>> Then they got >> We're almost there, I think.
Where's everybody going?
>> Hello. Hello. We're in Rome.
>> After 760,242 rooms, we've seen stairs that slide up to Capella Sistina, so we're probably about to get catfished again.
>> [laughter] >> We have no idea if it's going to be a bunch of carpets >> Yes.
>> and tiles.
>> But it said we're at a sign that says like turn your cameras off now, so we think it's there. So, if it's true, we will see you after >> Yes, with our review. We're so excited.
I'm exhausted.
>> And by after, I'm talking like at the table having after tea.
>> Correct. So, hopefully the next time you see us, it'll be after tea hotel.
>> All right.
>> Toodles.
>> Wow. We want to We want to find exits so bad. Y'all, look at this.
>> [laughter] >> So beautiful.
Y'all.
We I love Rome. I'm going to give a Michael Jackson for that. I love to do her.
This is the longest this is There's just no way to see it. Can you Do you think you can get trouble getting your camera out?
>> Probably.
>> Like at this point the artifacts are starting to give like my grandmother saved everything. Respectfully.
>> Respectfully.
>> Always respectfully. Where are these two?
>> Are there any >> Oh, that's not them.
>> This isn't a modified staircase. I'm getting on my way back.
>> Oh.
>> Cuz I can't do anymore.
>> Okay.
Let's see. Give me Give me one good one.
>> Stand up.
>> Take my people with me.
>> You would have told Harriet I'm going to go back.
>> Harriet would have been like me.
>> So, Raven has started to run towards the finish line. Hold, please.
To get down this.
>> She's so fun.
>> And Gabe is having a hard time looking down.
>> I don't like heights, and this railing is not comforting >> Do you want to take a look over?
For the cameras?
Seraphina did it.
Oh, we're not that high anymore.
>> I want to break free.
>> I am so beyond that.
>> Did you find Apertivo close, like across the street close?
>> No, we found it across the >> We are free, everyone.
Time for Apertivo.
So, we finally got to Apertivo.
And it's it's uh me, Gays, and Raven. Sarah plain wanted to give up and go to the heart back, so we left her there.
Um but now we've got some some um Italian meats and we've had some drinks and we're just living life, talking. And uh here we go. We're going to try a little little pan.
This one's more on the sweet side.
Um I love it.
You got to put that camera down and eat something.
>> Mom.
>> Something like that can take minutes.
Okay.
So, we came [music] to Osteria I've had some wine.
Okay. from the server.
Hello, everybody. We came to Osteria dell'Oca Bianca and we got bread, we got wine, they got wine. Say hi to the girls.
>> Hi girls.
>> Hi girls.
>> We got the special bolognese. Raven [music] got the scoglio.
>> It's a seafood pasta.
>> It's a seafood pasta and then she got the ravioli [music] and finally decided on a pumpkin soup.
And now we're about to dig in, so we hope you enjoy your meal, too.
>> What else?
You don't have your internet or did you?
>> I'm having a glass of red cuz it's old world wine. Old world wine means there's no sulfites. Wait, look at the legs.
Look at the legs.
>> I won't be on it.
>> Look at the legs, honey.
Look at the legs.
>> So black it's strong.
>> Thank you so much.
>> You're merged.
He's never drank in his life and he picks today to be completely shocked.
Was that from a parent trap? Anyway, he's really drunk. The rest of us are just having a lovely dinner. My food was bomb. Her food was bomb. Look at me.
Their food was bomb.
>> I'm not drunk.
>> [music] >> I'm enjoying mine.
So is your right eye.
>> That is good.
I'm going to own it.
I'm a director. I'm James Cameron.
We're going to do tiramisu deconstructed. I grew up in the Catholic Church but I decided I had some questions.
Okay, here we go. So he said do the coffee first.
You're you're fine.
And you just do like that.

>> You're supposed to.
It's it's layered.
>> This is so fun.
>> Beef sauteed with peas and onions.
>> Did you use all the espresso?
>> I'll be up all night.
>> Oh.
>> You shouldn't have let that in.
>> Yeah, you shouldn't have.
I don't think you mix it like that.
>> I'm not mixing it.
Okay, you try and do it better.
>> You can film me now.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay, here we go. This is the chocolate.

Angels and kisses and time tracks.
>> I have a blister on my toe.

They fell off.

>> All right, y'all have so much fun at the bar.
Oh my gosh, it's going to be so much fun. Y'all have fun, go go.

She's going to stand up in an hour or so.
>> She's already She plans to really party.

And the club is the size of my left nut.
And we did get a free drink though, so.
>> I'm drinking very carefully.

>> That's right.
>> That's cute.
All right, it's dark as [ __ ] but what are we feeling, guys? Thoughts?
>> We're feeling good. There's some straight men that have infiltrated the club, but they're Americans, so we kind of want to be friends.
>> Yeah, Blake wants to leave me.
>> [laughter] >> Well, uh producer Gabe and I just had an adventure.
We went to a um What is it?
>> We went to a We We went to a bar called Censored, and it was anything but.
>> It was a gay cruising bar. So, me and Blake got to watch porn together for the first time.
And we got to go down into dark rooms and watch men fornicate.
>> It was interesting. There was a lot of dark rooms. It smelled like a bad YMCA.
>> And I >> And I'm ready to go to bed. I feel like we were there for 10 minutes.
>> I feel like I broke your virginity. I know you did it in New Orleans, but I feel like this was more gritty.
>> It was It was Yeah, there was actually things happening.
And I went into a curtained room, and somebody went like this to me, and I was like, "I got to go."
