Renee Caldwell returned to the bench on the Monday following the settlement. She put on her robe in the anti- room of courtroom 4B the way she had done thousands of times.
She picked up her gavl. She straightened her collar. Before she walked through the door, she opened her bag, took out the small burgundy wallet, looked at the photograph on the credential card, her face, her name, her title for a moment.
Then she put it back in the same pocket where it always belonged.
She walked into the courtroom. Everyone rose.
"Be seated," she said. The first case on her docket that morning was a civil rights matter. A black man in Memphis pulled over 11 times in 14 months on the same road. No citations ever issued. No complaints filed because he told his attorney who is going to listen to me.
She listened. She had always listened.
That was the job.
That had always been the job. Someone whose neighbor isn't recording. Someone who will carry what happened to them in a place that has no name and no remedy and no 44page report.
That person is out there tonight on some quiet street in some town with nice postcards and a police department that reviews its own complaints.
That is the part that doesn't end when the gavl comes down. That is the part that has to stay with us.
