Did You Know You Can Just Buy A Chateau? | Architectural Historian Reacts

[00:00:00]Apparently, you can just buy a chateau in  France, and that's really amazing because we get to look through chataus that  are for sale right now. Hi everyone, Ken here. Hit that subscribe button and without  further ado, let's dive right in. All right, as usual, we're going to read the description  while you guys see the exterior photos, and then I'm going to catch up with you and  we'll go through the interiors together!

[00:00:21]This chateau has 13 rooms, 7 beds, seven baths,  has 528 m of interior space, and sits on 78,628 m. It is listed for 4.95 million euro. The first  interior photo we get to is very charming and it's a good setup for just how real this whole  property looks. Entering into the gallery here, and this first salon we're going to is absolutely  gorgeous. the chevron floors and we don't actually see a lot of chevron. Usually most of what we see  is herring bone. So, this is a nice change of pace and it's very formal and very fitting for a house  of this caliber. And the fireplace game in this house is very strong. That last one was gorgeous  and this one is just absolutely incredible.

[00:01:10]So, it looks like it's definitely been modernized  in a few different places. And I think we've seen enough evidence of that in some of the paint  choices and lighting choices throughout.

[00:01:20]Absolutely a gorgeous setting, too. The next  chateau has 10 rooms, six beds, two baths, a floor area of 400 m, and sits on a lot of 52,197  m. It is listed for about €823,000. Right off the bat, I'm immediately stunned. This is a very cozy  looking room. It doesn't look too grand in scale, but the details are astounding. From the  let it stain glass to the ornate plaster ceiling and then once again chevron floors  and a beautiful fireplace surround. So, I'm very interested to see how the rest  of this house is going to play out.

[00:01:57]Once again, absolutely gorgeous architectural fittings from the fireplace surround  to the floors to the Wayne Scotting.

[00:02:07]Very modern kitchen. Um, I think we're probably  going to see that a lot. Same with modernized bathrooms. And at least they have a little bit  of character to them. And I really wish that we got to see more photos of this house, but  unfortunately that is the dead end here. So, let's skip on over to the next. This chateau has  21 rooms, nine beds, three baths, has a floor area of 1,000 m, and sits on a lot of 1,953 m. It is  listed for 1.9 million. Built in 1920 using Paris stone, this exceptional mansion has been entirely  renovated to the very high standards with superb handpainted marbling and faux effect decoration  by the finest craftsman in France. And whenever I think of France in the 1920s, this is exactly what  I picture as far as interiors go with the bold use of color everywhere between these pastels to these  really dramatic rich tones. The first thing that really catches my eye in this photo is the fluting  that goes all the way around on the fireplace surround. And then the faux marbled panels paired  with this gilded work here. It's very interesting and very, very French. And it looks like this  bold use of color continues throughout. I can't quite tell if this is painted or if this is wood  because I can see a lot of wood grain in here which gives it that kind of textured effect. And  it almost blends perfectly with the overmantle.

[00:03:29]Yeah, so many absolutely insanely  gorgeous features in this house from the row iron work to the marble carvings.

[00:03:40]Yeah, this is an absolute dream home for somebody.  And then we get back to the exterior where we can see these gardens sitting between the house  and the arcade. And that is just so incredibly charming. The next chateau has 17 rooms, 12 beds,  seven baths, a floor area of 300 m, and sits on a lot of 45,267 m. It is listed for 1.245 million  euro. And the description starts off with, "Set within over 4 and 1/2 hectares of serene private  parkland, this enchanting 19th century chateau offers a lifestyle of elegance, tranquility, and  timeless beauty." And from the exterior photos, I absolutely believe what it's saying so far. The  first interior photo starts off with this room, which I'm supposing is a reception room of  sorts, and then it feeds into the dining room, it looks like, once again carrying those same door  surrounds. And these have such whimsical detailing on them. I'm really loving this so far. And then  we get to the kitchen where this amazing fireplace is here. I'm supposing that might have been an  oven at one point. Okay. And then this staircase.

[00:04:47]It's very simple, but also incredibly elegant at  the same time. And then we get to the bedrooms, which once again, it has that kind of like formal  simplicity to it. And let's see if that theme continues to the rest. Yeah, these are all very,  very charming spaces. And it has a pool. You can't beat that. All right, let's move on to the next  one. All right, our last chateau has 24 rooms, 17 beds, 14 baths. It has an interior floor area  of 1,650 m and it sits on a lot of 71,67 m. It is listed for €2.18 million. The description says,  "Nestled in the pictures countryside near Jean Knack, Chateau Deriak is a light-filled mid-9th  century estate that beautifully combines historic charm with proven commercial appeal. Ideal for  film and publicity shoots, weddings, and events, the property offers both grandeur and versatility.  Right off the bat, we have these dotted marble floors carrying us into the stair hall. And I am  very, very expectant of what this interior might look like just based on how it's opening up so far  with all this rich woodwork everywhere. And let's take a closer look at this fireplace because we  can see these lion's heads carved into the lower mantle. It's details like that I really like  to keep an eye out for because they just really create such a sense of space that's so personal  and yet also just so timeless and charming.

[00:06:21]Now, this is a rather interesting feature,  how this arch comes up and creates this niche where the ceiling behind it also rounds out.  That's not something you see all the time.
