Trump Weighs Cutting US Troops in Germany Amid NATO Rift & Iran War Tensions | Firstpost LiveAdded:
The fallout from Donald Trump's war with Iran is now spreading far beyond the battlefield. It is straining relationships with America's closest allies and risks changing the very structure of NATO. Donald Trump has now threatened to withdraw US troops deployed in Germany after a sharp exchange with German Chancellor Frederick Mert.
Chancellor Mert, who has spent months building a working relationship with Trump, has now publicly questioned his strategy behind the Iran war.
The Americans clearly have no strategy and the problem with conflicts like this is always that you don't just have to go in, you also have to get out again. We saw that all too painfully in Afghanistan for 20 years. We saw it in Iraq. So, this whole affair is, as I said, ill-considered to say the least.
At the moment, I cannot see what strategic exit the Americans are now opting for, especially as the Iranians are obviously negotiating very skillfully or rather very skillfully not negotiating and letting the Americans travel to Islamabad only to leave again without any results.
An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian state leadership, especially by these so-called revolutionary guards.
Well, Mert also suggested that Iran was outmaneuvering the US at the negotiating table, calling the situation a setback for America.
And at the moment, I do not see how this can be realized in the near future because the Iranians are clearly stronger than one thought and the Americans clearly don't seem to have a convincing negotiating strategy.
I am sorry to have to say it, but at the moment, it is a pretty tricky situation.
And as expected, the US president responded. Trump accused Mert of being soft on Iran and even implied that the German leader was tolerant of Iran developing nuclear weapons, a claim that Mert has consistently rejected. Trump also took a personal dig at Germany's economic performance, escalating the war of words.
The Chancellor of Germany, Frederick Mert, thinks it's okay for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. He doesn't know what he's talking about. If Iran had a nuclear weapon, the whole world would be held hostage. I am doing something with Iran right now that other nations or presidents should have done long ago.
No wonder Germany is doing so poorly, both economically and otherwise.
Well, this fallout that come comes despite Mert previously going to great lengths to maintain strong ties with Washington. He visited the White House multiple times, publicly praised Trump, and even supported US military operations by allowing access to German bases. But, that support has come at a cost. The war has hit Germany's economy hard. Energy prices have spiked, industries have been shaken, and economic growth forecasts have been cut.
Politically, Mert is also feeling the pressure with his party losing ground in national polls.
And it is costing us a lot of money.
It is costing us a lot of tax money and taxing our economy.
This conflict, this war against Iran, is having a direct negative effect on our economy and needs to be ended as soon as possible.
And the United States is now reviewing its military footprint in Germany, a move that could shake NATO dynamics.
President Donald Trump has said Washington is considering a reduction of American troops stationed in Germany.
The United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of troops in Germany with a determination to be made over the next short period of time. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
But, what's the situation on the ground?
Well, right now, more than 36,000 American troops are stationed in Germany, making it one of the largest US military presences anywhere in the world. Alongside them, there are about 1,500 reservists and over 11,500 US civilians supporting operations on the ground.
This presence is not new. It dates back over 70 years to the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War.
Germany today is not just a host, it's is a command hub.
In fact, Germany ranks number two globally, only Japan hosts more US troops. But now, with Donald Trump's threat that the entire structure could change, after Trump's public criticism, the German Chancellor was quick to respond. He claimed that his relationship with Trump remains good.
No, not at all. From my perspective, my personal relationship with the US president remains good.
I simply had doubts from the start about what was begun with the war in Iran and that is why I expressed this. In Germany and Europe, we are suffering a significant impact from the consequences of the Strait of Hormuz being closed.
This is having a direct impact on our energy supply. It is having a massive impact on our economic performance and that is why I am pressing for a swift resolution to the conflict.
Well, this fallout comes amid tensions with Europe over the Iran war. Germany and other allies have kept their distance from the conflict.
So, in the end, this is no longer just about US troops. It is a full-blown transatlantic feud. As words turn sharper between Washington and Berlin, the real battle may now be inside NATO itself.
The world doesn't fit in boxes, so why should your news?
