Gerrymandering is the practice of manipulating electoral district boundaries to dilute the voting power of specific communities, particularly minority groups, by dividing them across multiple districts or concentrating them in areas with limited political influence. In Tennessee, Republican lawmakers have redrawn congressional and state legislative maps to weaken Black voting power in Memphis and Nashville, splitting Davidson County into multiple districts to eliminate the city's ability to elect a Democratic representative. This systematic manipulation of electoral boundaries represents a form of political disenfranchisement that undermines democratic representation and has sparked organized community resistance, including protests, lawsuits, and voter education campaigns. The struggle in Tennessee reflects broader national concerns about voting rights, fair representation, and the integrity of democratic processes.

Memphis and Nashville Tennessee are NOT taking this Republican racist gerrymandering laying down!!追加:
Memphis, we are not mad enough. There's some stuff that you have to get on and talk about if you understand the topic, and this is one of the ones. Listen up, bro. So, imagine you own a house with three other people, and y'all make decisions about this house because every person owned a piece of the living room.
There's four pieces of the living room, every person owns a portion. The other three people share completely different views than you, but you own your 1/4 of that home. So, you have a 1/4 opinion.
What Tennessee law makers just did is that they allowed those other three people to redraw the lines, and now our 1/4 of the home is now worth nothing.
And we have no voice, no vote, no nothing. Bro, once you notice how they just drew these lines, it is blatantly racist, bro. There's no other way around it. They want MAGA to be sent as a representative for Memphis. Like, bro, they just took our voice. They just took our voting power. They just took everything. And honestly, not only Memphis should be mad, all black people should be mad because this is an indication that if this can happen in Memphis, this can happen anywhere.
Memphis, we had a voice. We had a vote.
It was a small voice. It was a small vote because we are only in that smaller section of Tennessee. But at the same time, we still matter. Now, they completely even took away that small vote, that small representation that we already had. Like, we're not mad enough.
Like, this is some I felt those who came before me saying, "Be courageous. Speak from your heart.
Do the right thing. Don't be timid. Show some courage." Something our Republican colleagues don't have. Stand strong in the face of adversity. I get emotional every time I say this because I think about my baby boy. And it's just I can't believe he has less rights than his grandmother. To know all the things that black people have went through, and I come here today to fight against everything, and now their vote is being taken away. Black people's vote has been taken away. This is downright egregious.
Republicans aren't good enough to actually gain the respect of black people. They got to take our vote. They don't have an agenda that actually uplifts Memphis. They create agendas to tear us apart. The Republicans can't get enough of having eight to one. They got to take it all. They can't win fairly, they got to cheat.
They want to disband our public education, give the money to private schools, and then say the school system is bad and take it over. They want to take away the authority of one of the largest airports in our region. Take that too.
They just want control. They want everything. And this racist agenda is going to stop today.
If you think for one moment that we just going to walk away and take this, you're sadly mistaken.
If you think your favorite Make Memphis Matter senator is going to win the congressional ninth district, think again. And if you didn't think all this was racially motivated, I want you to take a look at this clip. I'm going to roll the clip and I'm not going to provide any further context. You figure it out. Are you aware that Memphis is predominantly African American? I'm not.
>> So, to my sponsor who went to law school at the University of Memphis and lived there for 3 years, you're telling me you're not aware that Memphis is predominantly African American. Am I correct?
>> Senator Lamar, he's answered that. Is the sponsor aware that Shelby County is predominantly African American? I I'm not aware.
>> Are you aware that Tennessee's ninth congressional district is the only majority African American congressional district in the state? No, I have no knowledge of that. Are you familiar with these photos from the 1960s? These are photos of two black activists being held from legislative meetings in Memphis, Tennessee. Just kidding, these photos are actually from April 7th, 2026.
Protests didn't stop Republicans from approving a new map Thursday that carves up the state's sole black-majority congressional district in Memphis. It is I was up this morning getting ready to go to Nashville as we fight against the racist redistricting effort of the Tennessee General Assembly trying to take away House representation in the US Congress. But, we know they're not going to stop there. This is an attack on black voting rights, our accessibility, and agency to choose the people that we want to serve us and to lead our communities. The racism that is imbued in this decision cannot be overstated.
The reality is they have consistently found ways to attack and reduce Memphis's power from my expulsion from the Tennessee House of Representatives to the current map.
