A particularly dangerous incident occurred when a column advanced toward a position marked as a bridge crossing, only to find the bridge had been destroyed months earlier and the maps had not been updated. The unit arrived at a riverbank with artillery, supply trucks, and infantry, finding nothing but water. The unit that was supposed to secure the crossing had to wait exposed in open terrain while commanders rerouted, costing hours and, in some accounts, lives. This incident demonstrates how outdated cartographic information can create life-threatening situations for military forces, even in the absence of enemy action.
