Kyiv summons Israeli ambassador over alleged imports of stolen Ukrainian grain | Morning ReportAdded:
Hello, you're watching TVP World News.
I'm Yashinski.
As the talks between Washington and Thran continue to stall, German Chancellor said that the United States is being humiliated by Iran. At the same time, high stakes diplomacy is intensifying as Iran's foreign minister Abbasari is in Russia for talks with the country's leader Vladimir Putin while tensions over the trade of Ormuse continue to escalate. John Todd reports.
>> Iran's foreign minister Abbas Arachi arrives in Russia for talks with President Vladimir Putin, a longtime ally of Tehran. Iraqi, who's representing Iran, installed talks with the US, had a key message.
>> Excessive demands of the United States caused the previous round of negotiations despite its progress to fail. Over the weekend, he'd been in Oman to discuss the US Iran standoff over the straight of Hormuz, which has halted around a fifth of the world's oil supplies, sending fuel prices skyrocketing. Germany's Chancellor Mertz has a blunt assessment, saying the US is being humiliated.
>> This whole affair is, as I said, illconsidered. An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian state leadership.
Hopes of reviving peace efforts are fading after Donald Trump scrapped a visit on Saturday by his envoys to Pakistan, which is brokering talks.
Thran's leadership has heard Trump repeatedly walk back threats to renew attacks. With approval ratings falling, Trump also faces domestic pressure to end the unpopular war ahead of the midterm US elections later this year. As the stalemate continues, analysts say Tehran has a track record of being able to withstand military and economic punishment. It's America. Of course, military is no comparison to Iran. But when in symmetrical war, Iran has an upper hand because it can make a lot of trouble all over the world. The White House late Monday confirmed the United States is discussing a new proposal from Iran aimed at reopening the Hormoo Strait while deferring nuclear negotiations to a later stage. It could be the deal that gets Trump off the hook. John Todd for TVP World >> from the US has told them they can't come. I mean the problem. John Bolton, former US National Security Adviser, told TVP World that the US could do much more to bring about regime change in Iran. Bolton added that President Donald Trump would not put boots on the ground to depose the current leadership in Iran, but the US could provide a much needed support for the Iranian opposition.
>> I think there is a very compelling case to be made for regime change in Iran. Uh but if that were our objective, we have not done what we need to do. Uh most most importantly, we have not consulted with, worked with, aided the opponents of the regime inside Iran. It seems to me pretty clear Trump is no simply no way Trump will use boots on the ground to affect regime change. We may have uh specific tasks that Americans on the ground might perform like opening the straight of Hormuz, but but but this is not anything that's going to be of a scale that in and of itself would produce regime change and therefore it's going to be the people of Iran who are enormously unhappy with the regime all across the country uh but who are not well organized who could benefit from uh cooperation with the US, Saudi Arabia, others uh who could use resources whether it's telecommunications, money, weapons, uh to to provide the basis inside the country for the regime to crumble. And I think the regime is cracking at the top already because of the six weeks of US and Israeli attacks, but there's more work to be done and we could be aiding the opposition far more than we are at present.
French foreign minister Jean Alod said that the risk of nuclear proliferation has never been so high. He made the comment at the nuclear non-prololiferation treaty revision conference citing threats from Russia, North Korea and Iran.
Russia is pursuing a revisionist imperial colonial policy. Russia's nuclear rhetoric is weighing heavily on Ukraine, showing that Russia is deviating from its exclusively defensive commitment in the framework of nuclear weapons. It is high time for Russia to radically change its stance.
Never has the risk of nuclear proliferation been so high, and the threat posed by Iran and North Korea's programs is intolerable for each and every state party to this treaty.
The foreign ministry in Kiev has summoned the Israeli ambassador in protest at what it says is the illegal import of grain stolen by Russia from occupied Ukrainian territory. Israel has counted that Ukrainian officials have provided no evidence to support their accusations.
A diplomatic spat erupted between the two countries over what Kiev claims is the repeated acceptance by Israel of Russian shipped grain from occupied eastern Ukraine.
Shipping tracking data showed that the Panoritis, a Panama flagged cargo vessel reported to be carrying 25,000 tons of wheat and Bali, reached the Israeli port of Hifa on Sunday and was awaiting permission to dock on Monday. Israeli newspaper Karetsz has reported that Israel accepted at least four such shipments of Ukrainian grain this year.
The situation led to an exchange on X between the country's foreign ministers on Monday. Ukrainian foreign minister Andre Sabikha stated that and I quote it is difficult to understand Israel's lack of appropriate response. Sabiha's Israeli counterpart Gideon Sar responded that and I quote once again evidence substantiating the allegations is yet to be provided.
Hungary's outgoing Prime Minister Victor Orban is set to give up his parliamentary seat on Tuesday. The move follows his party's recent landslide defeat which resulted in the opposition TISA party securing a comfortable twothirds majority. Our correspondent in Budapest, Andrew Sweeney has more.
>> Hungary's outgoing Prime Minister Victor Orban is leaving Parliament on Tuesday.
He overinish his mandate as a FedE MP.
>> I am now not needed in parliament but in the reorganization of the patriotic movement. But will he do that from outside Hungary? Orban is set to travel to the United States. He says to attend the World Cup, but he reportedly has meetings lined up with MAGA movement figures. His daughter Rael, who reportedly manages the family's assets, moved to the United States last year, and his son Gashbar was recently discharged from the Hungarian Defense Forces. this MAGA ties. He still hopes for some understanding, I think, and he hopes for that uh the United States would not uh would not give him back to Hungary.
>> 25 out of 52 FID MPs will give up their mandates like Orban and incoming Prime Minister Peter Majar claims oligarchs linked to the party are moving their assets abroad. Les Mesaros, Orban's childhood friend in Hungary's richest man, denies Majar's accusation that he's planning to sell the Pro Fides TV2 channel. I thank him for finally admitting that he's the one behind the Gibbble style TV2 propaganda factory in Masaros Place. I wouldn't have lawyers drafting letters, but would prepare for the hearings lined up at the National Asset Recovery and Defense Office. While Mezadoros has denied he's fleeing, the Fedes party chairman in Seed Radi Feriz was arrested at Budapest airport on Friday charged with budgetary fraud. He resigned his position last week.
Hungary's tax authority carried out the arrest. According to Majar, it also blocked asset transfers linked to Fedes Minister Antal Rogan who was previously sanctioned by Washington. He too is relinquishing his seat in parliament.
Antarogan, one minister of the Orurban cabinet was also taken off the sanctions list after Donald Trump was sworn in. Of course, Antarogan was uh was supervising all the secret services. He was the mastermind behind this whole propaganda machinery.
>> Majar will officially become prime minister on May 9th after 16 years of Feday's rule. He's already issued a warning.
>> I respond with Victor Orbin's own words.
Nothing will be forgotten. Everything has been noted. Everything will be taken care of.
>> Could an exodus of Fedz officials and their associates begin before he takes office? For TVP World, Andrew Sweeney.
Two of Romania's largest opposition parties, the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians are calling for an accelerated no confidence vote currently scheduled for next week. Both groups claim they can gather enough parliamentary signatures to bring down the Romanian minority government by this Tuesday.
>> There is no pact with the Social Democratic Party. For now, it's a joint discussion and we have agreed not to risk having two motions that would both fail. Any parliamentary cooperation is welcome. Our political objective is early elections. If not, we have our own path remaining in opposition, especially since the Social Democrats want to maintain the current coalition. Both parties will be the initiators of the motion. What we will do after the motion remains to be seen. Of course, we have a plan, consultations with President Nikosardan. On all occasions, the Social Democrat party has expressed support for continuing this coalition, but without Bologan. If such a scenario emerges after the vote of no confidence, then clearly that will be our main priority.
We have seen many things happen in politics.
Tensions are ramping up between Georgia and the European Union with Tibilisi summoning the EU ambassador after he delivered sharp criticism of the political direction taken by Georgia.
Georgia called in EU ambassador Pavo Herchinski following his warning at an event in Brussels that the country stands at a crossroads between European democratic values and a dark past marked by instability and corruption. The remarks triggered strong backlash from Georgian officials, including the country's prime minister, who accused the ambassador of effectively threatening the country with civil war and economic decline. In response, Kchinsky reiterated the EU's support for Georgia's membership ambitions while cautioning that its current trajectory could jeopardize its chances of joining the block.
Ireland is set to take over the rotating council presidency of the European Union in July with the country's foreign minister paying a visit to Poland to ramp up trade and security cooperation between Warso and Dublin. Natalyia Kumarov explains.
>> Trade and security. These are the two main areas of cooperation between Poland and Ireland. Ireland's top diplomat and defense minister, Helen Mckanti, came to Warso to discuss Dublin's priorities ahead of taking over the EU presidency in July.
>> What connects us is a strong Polish diaspora, which has found a second home in Ireland. About 120,000 people serve as a bridge between our countries.
The two countries are staunch allies when it comes to supporting Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion.
There is however a big difference between Poland and Ireland and that is the defense spending. While Warso leads the way with nearly 5% of GDP allocated to security. Ireland lacks far behind its allies with the lowest defense expenditure in the EU. Now security is being set as the main priority of its upcoming EU presidency. While Ireland may geographically be further away from where the conflict is happening, we are and I as Minister for Defense am absolutely determined that we will play our part. Uh that we will ensure security and defense of the EU as a whole is front and center during our presidency. That we will continue to invest in our defense. That we will continue to invest in new and emerging technologies that are now more needed than ever.
>> Last December, Dublin made the record 35% increase to its defense spending.
Looks like Ireland might finally be ready to take greater responsibility for European security architecture. For TVP World, Natalyia Kumarov, >> the first woman to lead the church of England, Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Molali held a meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican. After joining the pontiff for a common prayer, the two spiritual leaders debated a future path of dialogue between Anglicans and Catholics, two Christian denominations that have recently been moving closer together since the major rift that began back in the 16th century.
Your holiness, thank you for your gracious welcome and for your prayers and kind wishes at my time of my installation. I am deeply grateful. It is a joy and privilege to be received by you together with this delegation.
>> New problems have arisen in recent decades, rendering the pathway to full communion more difficult to discern.
I know that the Anglican communion is also facing many of these same questions at this time.
Nevertheless, we must not allow these continuing challenges to prevent us from using every possible opportunity to proclaim Christ to the world together.
That's all for now. Thank you for watching. Please stay with us. here on TVP World.
