Grizzly bears actively prey on black bears, which explains why areas with high grizzly populations typically have fewer black bears; black bears emerge from dens disoriented but not starving, move slowly while searching for food, and are most visible during the last hour of daylight when they become active to feed.

Grizzly vs Black Bear - The Truth About PredatorsAdded:
cuz I'm going to tell you Grizzly will use a black bear as a snack any day of the week. So, their tendencies, how they act, how they behave, they're like any bear.
Um they get out, especially this time of year, so they're coming out. So, whenever you they come out of a den, at first for several days, they're kind of disoriented. So, they're >> Okay. Uh you know, and everyone's like, "Well, it's cuz they don't have any food source." That's not true. They typically have stored enough uh calories when they come out of the den. They're not like starving. They're not dying. But, they are looking for food. They're kind of getting their wits about them.
And so, a black bear is going to stroll around. They can definitely migrate to different areas. Um they're going to be looking for food source cuz I'm going to tell you Grizzly will use a black bear as a snack any day of the week.
>> Oh, I bet that's right. Yeah.
So, if you hear somebody say, "Oh, yeah, there's a ton of grizz in this area."
How you're I'm not saying you're wasting your time, but I can tell you just from a guy on the ground you see a lot less black bears. I mean, like uh the ranch that I that I spent most of my life on and I guide down there. We do 21 bull elk hunts a year.
I mean, they'll harvest uh you know, maybe one or two black bears a year from that area, like in just our area.
There's not a lot of them killed there, and there's a ton of grizzly, and there's a reason why. Those grizzlies are tough on those black bears.
But, a black bear, you know, it's it's a similar pattern to a lot of bears.
They're not you know, they're not a high-energy run 900 mph. They're you know, lumping around looking for food source, and so that gives you the opportunity to spot them, figure out the wind play.
That's the thing with bears, like they're really good with the wind. Like, you you're not going to beat them, like many animals.
Their habits, you know, like I said, they're going to be they're going to be laying down a lot. Uh they're going to be hanging out a lot. And then, when they're up and feeding, they're up and feeding. And oftentimes I see them towards the end of the day, you know, right in that last magic hour. That's when you're going to spot them. But, that's kind of their pattern then. You know, are they traveling at night? You know, I get I've had that asked before.
And yeah, I'm sure they are, but most of the time I, you know, from what I've seen, they're they're they're out, they're feeding, they're active. They can be active through the night. Um, in the morning time, there's a lot of times I've not seen them. So, just depends on what, you know, what area you're in, how much pressure they have, how active are they moving. But, a bear's a bear. Like, it's going to be out typically that last hour feeding, that's when you're going to have your your best luck in spotting.
