The MacBook Air M1, despite being one of Apple's most reliable laptops with no fan noise and excellent battery life, can experience critical logic board failures that require full board replacement rather than component-level repair, making the repair cost exceed the laptop's value and highlighting the challenge of modern integrated laptop design where single hardware failures can render the entire device disposable.

I genuinely didn't think I'd ever be making this video because for years I recommended [music] the MacBook Air M1 to basically everybody. Students, content creators, normal users, people looking to switch from Windows. But recently mine developed a problem that could effectively end the laptop. And the worst part, the fix will cost more than the laptop itself. Yeah, on a product that's considered one of Apple's best laptops that they've ever [music] released and most reliable. If you watched my channel before, you will know that I heavily involved the MacBook Air M1 in the earlier videos. It's the product [music] that started off my YouTube channel to be honest. I featured it a lot. I use it heavily [music] in the editing process, particularly Final Cut Pro. This thing has been insanely reliable. No fan noise, amazing battery, still amazingly fast in 2026. [music] And it is still one of the best value laptops out there, particularly if you can pick it up [music] second hand. But I didn't expect this issue. Let me explain. At first I thought it might be a software thing, like a macOS glitch.
Random shutdowns, the charging [music] was a bit dodgy, it would suddenly drop to 0% something like that.
I have a battery issue here. So, I went along to Apple and they told me my whole logic board needed replacing and that the battery was absolutely fine. I couldn't believe it. I researched [music] online, they convinced me that my battery was at fault. Went back to Apple, on the chat at least, and they said, "No, it's a logic board issue that the [music] engineers in store are absolutely right." So, at that point I gave up. So, what was happening was the moment the charge drops below 60%, [music] that's it, the laptop switches off, goes to 0% and I have to have run it on the power plug. Otherwise, 60% to 100% it works quite fine. If you don't know what the logic board is, it's basically the [music] main part of It's the brain of the computer. Without that, the computer fails. I'm sounding a bit dramatic here, but buying another MacBook is no easy feat. Prices are really, really high. I was lucky to get this when I did.
>> [music] >> And I don't really fancy getting another one. So, here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to keep it plugged in. Now, keeping it plugged in won't damage the battery that much. It will reduce the lifespan. I mean, to [music] be honest, I'm just going to stretch it out to maybe 3 years. Keeping it plugged in should be fine. There should be no risk of battery swelling. And to be honest, between 60% [music] and 100%, I can take out the charger plug. It's amazing that one hardware issue can do this and just render [music] a laptop completely disposable. But then that's the problem with these integrated modern laptops.
You can't repair one thing, you have to replace [music] the whole thing, which is just absolutely irritating. So, my MacBook Air M1 survives, but it's not the same. And the reason why I'm keeping it plugged [music] in is because one, I don't travel around with it. Two, I tend to use my iPad Pro more for editing, particularly with LumaFusion. [music] Do I get disappointed that Apple didn't contribute somewhat to the repair? Mainly because I've had 3 years of AppleCare, but then I understand their point of view. I've had it [music] for over 5 years now. I shouldn't have expected them to contribute anything, to be honest. The logic board itself doesn't cost much. It's just the repair.
[music] But I just don't have the patience or the precision to be doing that. Anyway, let me know [music] in the comments below. Have you had issues with your MacBook Air M1 or maybe another variant of the MacBook Air or even [music] the MacBook Pro? Like this video and consider subscribing. And until next time.
