What a Beautiful Day in the GardenAdded:
Hello everyone. Welcome back to K's in the Garden. I'm Kay and this is my garden.
On today's video, we are going to just do some odds and ends. I'm going to be direct sewing some more beans, the drying beans, and we're going to pull some things. We're going to pick some things. Just whatever we see. There's only about two things on my list today that I want to get into, which is planting the dry beans. And I'm going to get the squash um planted today. The squash we pull the strawberries. We're going to direct sew those as well. So, let me turn the camera around. and we're just going to kind of walk through the garden really quick and um see what we need to do. Some of the things we'll do on camera, some of the things um I'm not going to do on camera. Um it is a cloudy day, but as you can tell from the plants behind me, it's pretty windy, so we're going to try to see what we can get accomplished today before it gets dark and just enjoy the garden today. We've been having a lot of rain um in the month of May and so we haven't really been able to mow. You probably have noticed on some of the um videos, but I love it when we've had freshly mowed grass. Everything is blooming. There's so much greenery around. I love being in the backyard right before it starts to get like extremely hot. So, um come along with me. Let's take a look at some new things. Let's take a look at some things that we're going to need to um amend, pick, um plant. Um come along with me. This is just going to be an easy day outside.
You can already see here in the backyard, we've gotten a grass mode.
Everything is looking just beautiful, and I love hanging out in the backyard.
We're going to be heading over here um to this bed where we're going to direct sell the squash, the scallop squash. I think I'm going to do two plants over there with the comfry. I've already gotten some um the compost out of my compost bin. We're going to lay that down and we're just going to plop in a couple seeds. Look at the roses. Let's go around and take a look at a couple things right now. These roses are just beautiful. I don't know what type of rose bush this is. I think I have the tag, but I love the fact that it has so many different colors. It's not just one solid color. Sometimes they're pink, sometimes they're pink and white, sometimes they're peach, they're red, yellow. I love this rose bush and I need to find some place to put it in the ground cuz right now we do have it in a large pot.
I can't help but keep showing you guys the dalas. I'm so excited about these dalas, especially since I grew them from seed.
I love these dalas. This one has a lighter red color to it, but still just as pretty.
And the one over there is kind of a a I don't have a freshly bloom. Yes, I do.
And then we have this kind of a soft peach with a yellow center. That one's beautiful. I really wish the one on the other end of the bed would have bloomed so I can see what color that is. But I'm loving this one. This deep red.
Let me show you another spot while we have Dalia.
Before we get over to the other dalas, I think what I'm going to do is pull this cosmos. It's selfseated here. And I didn't know cosmos grew this big because I've always had them like in the top of this green stock, but this one grew and it is definitely taken over this bed from my I have sweet peppers in here if you can't tell. Um, so we're going to definitely pull this. I want to see if I can pull it and move it. I want to just transplant it someplace, but it's got to go. You can't stay here in this spot.
We just picked cherry tomatoes and take a look in there. We still have a ton that needs to be harvested today.
You can't pass up the snapdragons without stopping for a moment to take a look. But I've got to get this pepper staked. I have a steak here, but I need to clip it to it. We have Anaheim chili peppers.
We Those are Anaheims. I also have sweet banana peppers in here. And some of these can be harvested even here on the back side. This is Pippen's golden honey. And I even have a couple peppers in here. Lots of flowers.
So, we'll have quite a few peppers coming off of that soon.
But I definitely probably need to get in here and harvest some of these banana peppers.
We need to get a hold to harvesting some of this opal basil because it's already starting to put on some flowers and you don't want that. So, what you want to do, you want to just find a a section in between a group of leaves like this. And you just want to pinch it off. That's how you harvest it.
And I'm just going to I'll probably take a couple of these leaves off the bottom that I'll I'll use that But I'll come back and get the rest of these.
Okay, here's onions that are still bulbing up.
Um, I do need to come over and probably harvest some of these. Didn't are not looking too good. The ones on the end, I don't know if that's because it I do know it's too much water.
That's fine. We were experimenting with these anyway, so like I'll still use that. But the ones that still have green on the top, that just came right up. They didn't have a lot of roots.
I want to come in here and cut off some of the lower leaves.
There's also some eggplants that needs to be harvested.
We'll get some of those. Oh man, look at this one.
This is why I need to cut some of the leaves off so I can see there's eggplants in there. I'm also seeing a lot of pest damage over here. So, I'm going to spend a little time over here today and see um if I can find the little critter because I can see holes in the eggplants as well.
Okay, we made it to where we were actually trying to get to. This is another Dalia that I started from seed.
That is just Dalia are beautiful. I do believe they are my favorite. That and renunculus, but renunculus don't last very long. So, we do have a couple on this plant. And I did start some aers.
So, there are some aers down here.
I need to I actually have something in here staking this up, but I think I'm going to try to do a better job at staking that up.
This is a volunteer ground cherry. And I just noticed someone loves ground cherries as much as I do. We'll come back and get you.
And I do need to clean up my asparagus.
I don't want it to go to fern yet. of I might need to just let it go to fern this year because some of the asparagus is very thin and they're usually pretty thick. I think I need to fertilize this and just kind of let it go to fern this year and hope for a better crop next year. But I am going to try to come in here and get some of these weeds out.
And I do have a volunteer ground terry which I'm going to pull. I don't want that in this bed. I do have another dalia that I grew from seed right here.
Um, look, we have ginger. Our ginger is finally starting to pop up. If you're growing ginger, be very patient with it because it does take a long time for it to um, start growing.
Here are zenyas. Um, I mentioned before that I need to dead head some of these.
I will actually be doing that today.
I think I'm going to give up on the beets. I'm going to go ahead and pull them. Even though I do see a little bit of greenery starting to grow back, I just don't have the time for it to probably grow. I do, but I don't I don't know. I'm still thinking about it. When I get in here and look at it, I'll see if it's if I'm going to go ahead and pull it.
I don't have any plans of anything in this bed, so it's very likely I might just leave it.
I will come back to this. We are going to harvest those potatoes today and we're definitely got to pull these stalks out. This was the Brussels sprouts and we've got to get those pulled out. As you can see, the trash can is right here ready to go.
The last time I took care of these tomatoes, cleaned them all up, removed some of the leaves, and staked them up. So, they're looking a lot better.
I need to harvest some of this kale.
We need to get back to some of the green beans.
All right, so that is enough of talking.
Let's get to work. So, let me grab my tripod, set you guys up, and let's head over to get that compost um in the bed and some scallop squash planted.
Okay, guys. I tried. I said I was only going to plant two plants in here, but I think I'm going to do three. I'm going to plant scallop squash, and I'm going to plant gentry squash. So, I'm probably going to do two of each. There'll be four plants and I will just keep an eye on them and make sure that I kind of keep the leaves cut.
Okay, so while I'm over here, I saw a few blushing tomatoes. So, I decided to go ahead and and pick them. Again, we're going to pick our tomatoes while they're blushing. And I'm going to grab a couple more colundula flowers.
We get a nice harvest of strawberries at the beginning of the season and then a few right before June, but these are very small.
Okay, we are bouncing all around the garden today. However, we're going to stop here for a moment. Um, I'm going to be planting the dry beans over on this side. So, we're going to go get the beans and plant them here. Um, but I wanted to stop and take a moment to look at these beautiful flowers. Now, I am really bad with flowers as I keep mentioning. So, I'm not sure the name.
I'm not sure the name of these, but they're gorgeous.
And I have a few more that are popping up, but the wind, as you can see, that white one is the wind is just not being kind. I have another yellow one here, and there's one growing here.
I have these little stakes. I'm going to try to see if I can secure these two up.
Okay, that's the best I can do. They're just so topheavy that I'm not sure the best way to get those to stick. Now, I've been watching these grow for some time now, and clearly we're about to get some blooms, and I don't remember the bulbs that I planted here, but I'm pretty sure these are going to be fabulous. So, we can't wait for those to bloom. And the zenyas along the back are all starting to bloom, and that's going to be a really nice backdrop.
last couple years I always did cut flowers and took them in the house, but I think I'm really enjoying the flowers out here in the garden.
Okay, so on the drying beans that we're adding here, we're going to add the I'm definitely going to do the navy bush green bean and I'm going to do the light red kidney bean. These are both bush varieties. So, I think I'm going to do half the like kidney and lime half the llama, the navy bean because I did plant limema beans already. I don't know if I'm a fan of llama beans just yet. I want to try them out. So, I've already planted some of those on the side of the house. So, we're going to get these red kidney beans. and and I love me some red kidney beans because some delicious red beans and rice. I don't have very many. I think I might have another package in the house. If I don't, I'm probably going to add some more llama beans cuz we're going to plant this area kind of heavy.
So, I'm just going to sit the beans out so I can kind of see where I'm planting them. And then I'll go back and press them in.
And you can get nine in a square foot area.
These will grow all the way until they die back. So I won't pick these fresh.
So it's okay if I go all the way to the back because I won't need to pick them like I'm picking the the green beans.
Let's do the n more of those, but we're going to plant the rest of this packet.
Okay, so we got them all planted.
Okay, guys. So, I checked the weather forecast today and there's no rain, just cloudy skies. But, as you can see, we're starting to get some sprinkles. I don't think it's going to last. So, I'm just going to put the camera down while we continue to work. Um, and then I'll pick you guys back up and let you see what we've done. Okay, see you in a little bit. We are over here by the potato bed and we're going to go ahead and harvest these potatoes. It looks like it's going to keep sprinkling right now and so I want to harvest these. You should harvest your potatoes when it is the soil is dry. But before we do that, we have a garden snack. So, I just have to replenish my energy. I've been doing a lot. So, as soon as I get my delicious garden snack down, we're going to harvest these potatoes.
Now, this is the purple variety that we planted. This was like our first planting of potatoes.
It's probably a little early, but for some reason, they kind of died back already. So, we're going to go ahead and harvest and see what we get.
See you in a sec.
I know a lot of people say that gardening can be hard work, but it's very rewarding. It's very relaxing. It's good exercise to be outside getting your vitamin D.
I have no complaints.
I try to be smart about how I plant. So, I start early and getting things out before it gets too hot. I do all my major projects before it gets too hot. And I have a great um watering system set up, which I'll show you really quick.
So, we have sprinklers in our yard. And so we were able to tap into the sprinkler heads and add these and add these little extenders. And there's like three on each side. So there's six. And you can attach these hoses as long as you want with the watering sprinkler head, I guess, on the end. When our sprinkler system goes off, we can set it to water the lawn. It actually is watering not only the lawn like in the front yard, but it's also watering the garden. So, I don't have to come out and keep watering or standing here with a hose. Um, I hear a lot of people say that's one of the reasons why they don't garden. It's too hot to be out. So, that's how I managed to get my garden watered without a lot of effort. And then mostly it's on the weekend coming out harvesting or replanting um things in the garden. For the most part, that's what I do. So, here's our first harvest. Like I said, these are probably not going to be extremely large. We're looking more for quantity.
As you can see here, that's our first purple potato.
I will tell you, as soon as I finish harvesting these, I'm going to turn around and plant more potatoes in this bed.
I want to be very strategic and start on one end so I don't miss anything. There's quite a few small ones in here as well. Like I said, they die back pretty quick.
Okay. So, I'm going to amend this bed with bone meal and just a little bit of blood there.
Not much.
I left quite a few smaller potatoes of the purple variety in here. There's a lot of them.
I'll probably leave those two in there.
There's lots of worms, which is great.
So, this I have is the German butter ball potato.
And I'm going to go ahead and drop these potatoes. I've been having them in the in a bag so that they could chip with eyes. I'm not going to cut them. I'm just going to plant them.
Hold. Don't have a ton of them, so it's okay.
Like I don't have a lot.
You want to plant them with the eyes facing upward.
I have three more which I will get in on this side. Again, this is not the ideal tool. I just couldn't find my shovel cuz if you you don't want these shredded shredded edges damaging a potato, but it's what I had at the moment.
Okay, planting these pretty deep. I don't plan on healing these potatoes.
We're just going to see what we can get.
I see any purple potatoes on the top.
Just going to push those down in there and encourage them to grow as well.
I'm just going to tie this label and just stick it in a corner so we'll know what we have in this bed.
Again, I'm seeing lots of small purple potatoes. So, we're really hoping that we get some additional purple potatoes.
So, let's take a look at the harvest.
So, quite a lot of smaller potatoes. I think this is my largest one, but this plant died back quite early. So, I'm not quite sure what happened here.
This is goes to a light. But so not a big harvest, but as far as size, but quite a few. I think we planted maybe six to eight potatoes in this bed. There's still lots of small ones. These would have really turned out to be a great harvest if the plant didn't die back. I honestly think it wasn't being watered properly. Um, at one point I noticed the spout wasn't all the way open, so the whole bed wasn't getting watered. I think that's why I add back, but I'm not quite sure. So, but anyway, not a bad harvest. I'm going to dice these up. I'm going to um flash freeze them and I'll add them to sweet potatoes and regular rustic potatoes and it will be like a breakfast dish or a side item for dinner.
This side over here is not ready to be harvested. I am looking. You want to make sure that you do not see any potatoes piercing through the soil. If you do, you want to cover it up because if the potato gets too much direct sunlight, it will turn green and that could um be I don't know if it if the word is poisonous or it just will make you sick.
You don't want to eat a potato that has been exposed to too much sunlight and it is green. I did rub around. I did kind of move the soil around a little bit just to take a peek. And I am seeing um this was our our red potatoes. So, looks like we're going to have a decent harvest from this container. Okay, we're over here in the one of the other containers that I prepped earlier in the year for potatoes. And I have some more um red pontiac potatoes that I want to go ahead and get in the ground. Um they don't look their best. I've kind of left them in the pantry too long.
So we want to go ahead and get these um planted. So I did have this volunteer tomato that as much as I would love to keep it actually like three volunteer tomatoes in this bed, but they've got to go.
Actually, there's four volunteer tomatoes in this bed.
I see a caterpillar on one of them that I just pulled out.
They are master disguise artist. This must be a cherry tomato variety. Look at that. You can see a cluster of them growing right here. And there's actually a tomato starting to form on that.
That's unfortunate, but we already have designated areas for tomatoes.
We've got to get some room in.
I'm going to save this.
Well, I wanted a larger amount of soil.
But this is a ground cherry. I'm going to see if I can move it over to where the other volunteer ground cherry is.
I've already amended this. I thought I was going to be planting a lot sooner, but I am going to add just a little bit more bone meal.
I'm adding bone meal because the phosphorus and the NPK that is good for root development and since potatoes are a root growing vegetable then you want your P on the MPK to be present very present in your soil.
Okay, let's see how many we have.
I'm probably going to plant this extremely heavy just to go ahead and get all of these in here. They'll sprout pretty quickly because of the amount of eyes that are already on here.
One thing to think about when you're planting your potatoes, if you plant them very heavy, you're going to get smaller size potatoes. They're competing for nutrients and space.
But if you plant less in a container, don't plant them as heavy as I am. You may get larger potatoes.
I probably should, but we're just going to test it out.
We're not even really testing it out at this point. I know that to be a fact.
We're going to see how big these potatoes really want to grow. You know what I might do? I might just go ahead and put these slice Let me see the last two in the bed we just planted. It's okay for them to be a mixed variety.
We like all potatoes.
Okay, I'm going to tie my label.
And that is the red Pontiac potato.
We are wrapping up for the day. So, we've got a lot accomplished. We actually harvested some potatoes. We replanted potatoes in two different locations. We harvested tomatoes. We got the squash planted and the drying beans.
And a lot of cleanup. We were able to pull a lot of weeds.
got the yard mode. Um, and everything is just looking fabulous. We even trimmed up some of the tomato plants. Um, especially some of the dwarf tomato plants. They needed to be staked up and they needed to have some of the dead leaves cut off. So, we were able to do that. I also harvested my first bell pepper. So, this is a chocolate beauty and it is definitely a beauty.
We also harvested a few eggplants. So, this is the white jasper. And this one's probably a little bit further along than I would have probably preferred, but even with it being a slender variety of eggplant, the seeds should still be um small.
And we also were able to harvest um some of our purple variety eggplant. This is called the millionaire eggplant. I did purchase the millionaire eggplants, but I started the white jaspers from seed.
So, we're going to try these. This is the first time I actually grew this variety, both of these varieties. Um, but I am seeing quite a bit of pest damage on some of them. So, again, you guys know we had a really bad issue with caterpillars. The bell pepper is untouched. It looks amazing. So, we're going to wrap up by deadheading some of these zenas and hoping that I can get those to bounce back. Um, and I'm going to fertilize my watermelon plant, which is starting to kind of take over. I'm even seeing some female um, flowers on the watermelon. So, hopefully we might get some germination soon um before it gets too hot. We need to get some of those flowers to germinate because when it gets too hot, those flowers stop producing and we lose um, the time and being able to grow watermelon. So, um, thank you guys for hanging in there with me. I hope you had a great day in your garden. Um, and we'll see you soon.
Bye-bye.
