Europe is experiencing one of its most devastating wildfire emergencies in recent years, with massive blazes spreading across France, Spain, and Italy, forcing tens of thousands of evacuations. The crisis has prompted France to invoke the EU's civil protection mechanism, resulting in the deployment of water bombing aircraft. Spain declared a state of emergency around Madrid after over 10,000 people were evacuated, while Italy battles dozens of fires across Sicily and Calabria. According to Spain's Civil Protection Chief, climate change is making wildfires increasingly destructive, with some fires becoming so intense that even aircraft and ground crews have no chance of stopping them. The total area burned across EU countries this year is already the second largest on record, highlighting the growing intensity and frequency of wildfires across the continent.

Europe Wildfire Disaster: Thousands Flee As France, Spain & Italy Battle Massive Blazes | World News
Added:[music] [music] >> Europe is battling one of its most devastating wildfire emergencies in recent years as massive blazes [music] continue to spread across France, Spain and Italy forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes and holiday [music] destinations. In France, raging wildfires near the world-famous wine region of Bordeaux have engulfed vast stretches of forest prompting the evacuation of the [music] popular Cap Ferret Peninsula at the height of the summer vacation season. Residents and tourists, many carrying only their luggage, escaped by boat [music] as flames rapidly advanced through the area. The fire has already burned an area nearly twice the size of Manhattan leaving entire [music] communities under threat. Among those forced to flee was 69-year-old Patrick Martinot from Le Porge, south of Bordeaux.
He recalled how police [music] officers went door-to-door warning residents that the fire was only about 500 [music] meters away leaving them with little time to gather a few belongings before evacuating.
[music] The skies over Le Porge turned an eerie orange as thick smoke billowed above charred pine forests. Firefighting helicopters repeatedly flew overhead while deserted [music] neighborhoods stood surrounded by flames. The region has faced a similar disaster before. In 2022, wildfires scorched [music] the same forests and forced nearly 50,000 people to evacuate. This time, more than 23,000 [music] people have already been evacuated from southwestern France. The scale [music] of the crisis has prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to invoke the European Union's civil protection mechanism requesting international [music] assistance as firefighters continue battling what he described as a very intense emergency. [music] Responding to the request, the European Union has announced it will deploy three water bombing aircraft to support [music] French firefighting efforts.
Meanwhile, France's southeastern regions are also facing a growing crisis.
>> [music] >> Dozens of separate wildfires, driven by powerful mistral winds, have swept through areas surrounding the historic village of Cogolin. Authorities say around [music] 25 homes have been destroyed since Tuesday as flames continue to spread. The wildfire emergency extends well beyond France.
[music] In neighboring Spain, two major blazes out of control within 100 km of Madrid.
The smoke has become [music] so widespread that many residents of the Spanish capital woke up to the smell of burning forests [music] drifting across the city. The Spanish government has declared a state of emergency in the Madrid region after more than 10,000 people were evacuated in recent days.
Prime Minister [music] Pedro Sanchez described the situation as dramatic, while regional [music] officials warned that strong winds are expected to make firefighting efforts even more difficult. Hundreds of firefighters, supported by military personnel, continue battling [music] a massive wildfire in Guadalajara province, north of Madrid, while another major blaze [music] near Toledo has forced several villages to evacuate. Spain's Civil Protection Chief Virginia Barkin warned that climate change [music] is making wildfires increasingly destructive. She said climate change is destroying villages, [music] forests, and cultural heritage, adding that some fires become so intense that even aircraft and ground crews have no chance [music] of stopping them. Italy is also struggling with multiple wildfire outbreaks. Thousands of emergency workers are battling [music] dozens of fires across Sicily and the Calabria region. In a shocking allegation, a local official claimed that suspected arsonists [music] deliberately spread fires by tying rags soaked in flammable liquid to the tails [music] of stray cats, allowing the flames to spread across dry vegetation.
The human toll continues to rise.
>> [music] >> One firefighter died after falling ill while battling the flames in Sicily.
Earlier this week, [music] two firefighters lost their lives while fighting another wildfire near Bordeaux Airport in France. In total, [music] three firefighters have died as Southern Europe continues to endure extreme heat with temperatures climbing above [music] 40° C in several regions. According to satellite data from the European Forest [music] Fire Information System, the total area burned across European Union countries this year is already the second largest on record, highlighting the growing intensity [music] and frequency of wildfires across the continent. As firefighters continue their relentless battle against [music] the flames, authorities warn that worsening weather conditions and powerful winds could allow the fires to spread even further in the days [music] ahead, leaving thousands more at risk across Western Europe.
