The fire has already burned an area nearly twice the size of Manhattan leaving entire [music] communities under threat. Among those forced to flee was 69-year-old Patrick Martinot from Le Porge, south of Bordeaux.

In 2022, wildfires scorched [music] the same forests and forced nearly 50,000 people to evacuate. This time, more than 23,000 [music] people have already been evacuated from southwestern France. The scale [music] of the crisis has prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to invoke the European Union's civil protection mechanism requesting international [music] assistance as firefighters continue battling what he described as a very intense emergency. [music] Responding to the request, the European Union has announced it will deploy three water bombing aircraft to support [music] French firefighting efforts.

Italy is also struggling with multiple wildfire outbreaks. Thousands of emergency workers are battling [music] dozens of fires across Sicily and the Calabria region. In a shocking allegation, a local official claimed that suspected arsonists [music] deliberately spread fires by tying rags soaked in flammable liquid to the tails [music] of stray cats, allowing the flames to spread across dry vegetation.

According to satellite data from the European Forest [music] Fire Information System, the total area burned across European Union countries this year is already the second largest on record, highlighting the growing intensity [music] and frequency of wildfires across the continent. As firefighters continue their relentless battle against [music] the flames, authorities warn that worsening weather conditions and powerful winds could allow the fires to spread even further in the days [music] ahead, leaving thousands more at risk across Western Europe.
