Coral polyps can close up and fail to reopen when stressed by physical disturbance, such as scrubbing with a toothbrush, even in otherwise healthy reef aquariums with proper water parameters (salinity 1.025, balanced alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium). This stress response can lead to coral decline and death, demonstrating that even supposedly hardy corals like GSP require careful handling and environmental stability to thrive.

This Bullet Proof Coral WILL NOT Grow in My Aquarium | The Toilet CoralAdded:
What's up, YouTube? Mike from Mass Aquariums. Mass Aquariums. It's early in the morning for me. Tank light has been on for about an hour now, so corals are slowly starting to come out.
Um this video is sort of I don't know if it's a plea to the viewers to to like figure out what the hell is wrong without actually being here, but so I'm like 75% happy because my tank is looking really good. Like the zoas are starting to spread. Um the mushrooms are about to split. Duncan, this uh green head Duncan's about to sprout a new one.
All the euphyllia are out way out of their skeletons and flowing.
Um even this uh porites, this my only SPS is starting to encrust on this rock.
And then Oh, sorry. I have this blue ridge that um I'll see if I can post a picture and picture above. Finally had polyps come out. So overall the tank is healthy. The alveopora and the goniopora are out. The torch like except my GSP.
Right? I don't get it.
I have one tiny little polyp up there. That mat back there was about a 3 in by 3 in mat and I got it from my buddy Ryan.
It was out and flowing.
And then I took a soft bristle toothbrush and was sort of lightly scrubbing the brown algae off of it and it closed up.
And it never reopened.
And it never reopened. And then it started to melt away, and this is all I'm left with.
What I believe could potentially be some healthy polyps because the mat is still purple, and the little fingers aren't like melting away, but it's sort of pretty frustrating. And then I have See if we can get over here.
I have this one that I got almost a week ago, as well as these back here, and it's been Tomorrow will be a week, and these guys have not opened up. And it's sort of frustrating because I've never had trouble growing GSP, and I know that it's, you know, technically the coral that everybody says is so bulletproof. You can grow it out of a toilet. You can grow it in the back of a toilet.
You know, I've seen videos where people's tanks are crashing, and all their corals are just dying and melting away, and the GSP is just the only one going strong. So, please explain to me why my GSP does not go strong. It is so annoying because, you know, it's one of those simple corals, but it's one of my favorite corals. Like, I'm not going to lie.
I've been in the hobby forever. I've kept so many different kinds of corals, and one of the corals that has always been my favorite coral is GSP.
So, why will it not open?
That crap around it is just old glue.
Um but the polyps like the the little pieces came in frags, you know, off of a plug just in the bag.
They looked fine to me. No like slime or mucus or you know, like when you touch them, nothing came off.
And they just won't extend.
The blenny.
They will not come out.
This almost looks like, you know, it's just about to die anyway. Like I should just pull it off.
I mean, how long how long do you actually give it before you just give up?
And those were new frags. Like that should have came in, sat on the bottom of my tank for, you know, a day.
Nothing. Glued it to the back of the wall like I would do any GSP frag I got.
And nothing. Won't open up.
Flow [snorts] is good.
I mean, this one may have been my fault because I scrubbed it with the brush too many times and it just, you know, but it's got that one tiny little polyp, so something's alive. Maybe it'll start to spread again. I'm going to leave that thing alone. I am not touching it.
But very frustrating.
Look at the waving hand.
Beautiful. By the way, that rock that that's on is not glued. That's the only one that's not glued in case this gets out of hand and I got to remove it.
But that's it.
Any uh suggestions, leave them in the comments. I'm sure somebody knows what's up.
Salinity is 1.025.
My alk, calcium, and magnesium are like legit right where they need to be.
They're a couple points below the highest threshold, which is nice. Um besides, alkalinity is perfect.
So, I don't know.
I honestly don't know.
Tank's in great shape. I should be really thrilled, but I'm just pissed about this GSP, so leave a comment below, enjoy the rest of your week, and I'm out.
